Parallel drum shells (mainly kick and snare) run through UAD Fatso. Just got the Black Box recently, so I’ll definitely be playing with that. I loved that bass tone you got. I tend to duplicate a bass DI & run it through a Marshall Style amp sim for some grind and colour.

I love to saturate lead vocals, kick and snare. I use Decapitator. The best kick and snare sounds I have gotten are using Decapitator followed by Smack Attack (or your preferred transient shaper.) If you haven't you gotta try those two plugins in sequence.

I feel like saturation is what's mixing from 95% of mixes these days, they sound surgically clean and usually have zero character. Not saturating your tracks is like cooking with no salt. Vance uses extreme saturation because that's very popular to do in rock. The Beatles Revolution guitar sound is literally a preamp ran into another preamp.

@AnAmericanGuitarist2 жыл бұрын
That was really informative! Thanks! I have just begun using saturation more in the last 4 months and recently got the Black Box software as well. I love the Brainworx and Plug in Alliance plugins. They seem to let me do what I want to do quicker and easier than some others, generally speaking. I thought that maybe I was going down a bad path by wanting distortion on multiple sources in a mix or on a mix bus, but you just cleared that up for me. If it sounds great, do it. Another thing that I have never been clear on is that, as someone who grew up in the tape and hardware days and knowing how to use the gear into the red, I never knew if the new digital "stay out of the red" rules apply to plugin emulations of old hardware. Since the hardware could be pushed into the red, can the emulations be pushed into the red or am I just creating clipping problems down the line? For the most part I use my ears. I never heard that question discussed though.
@ColtCapperrune2 жыл бұрын
So it really depends on the piece of gear itself. Some interfaces, plug-ins, pieces of hardware sound terrible going into the red, and some sound incredible. Best bet is to always use your ears like you said. On my Apollo I will commonly push the hardware inserts so they just begin touching the red, especially on drum bus. Some really subtle clipping can sound good on the right thing

By "copyright strike" do you mean having the video de-monitized? There's a difference. Generally copyright strikes block a video. De-monitized just means you don't get ad money but the content still plays. I think there are subjective amounts of time for playing a song and being de-monitized.
@ColtCapperrune2 жыл бұрын
So you can play a song up to four seconds without getting demonetized, but there’s different levels and I never know which is going to happen. Yes I could just get demonetized, which I’d like to avoid anyway, but they can also mute sections of the video, which would render the video completely useless. I’ve had this happen before and had to pull the video down. It does it count as a community guideline strike which actually goes against my account, but you can get a copyright strike in addition to being demonetized.

Hey Colt! Great video, quick question. Coudl you not route a Guitar pedal with the output on an apollo twin for example and then just bump it back into the second channel or something and get the same effect?

It sounds good on bass at times and adding to some overly clean guitar, but I don't like saturation on the vocals except for the smallest amount. Anything that hampers the clarity of the vocals needs to be used cautiously to me.

Great video. Although I don't have the radial unit just yet. What I do have is a Fractal unit hooked up, for delays and reverbs. What are your thoughts on using it to add saturation on a track. Hi Colt, how do you find the Kit BB105 v2 compared to the earlier v1? I know people had issues with v1 but I still find myself reaching for it over v2 everytime I use it. Hi, that's because guitar pedals have different impedance/input/output levels than a standard interface line input and output. So, that's just to get the levels right going into guitar pedals.

The copyright thing is stupid, why wouldn’t any artist want their song to be played as much as possible, utterly ridiculous!
@ColtCapperrune2 жыл бұрын
It’s not coming from the artist, the distributor is the one who enforces it, and it’s a total cluster F to get somebody like distro kid, or CD baby to release the copyright claim. Takes months sometimes. And by then the video has lost all steam and traction. The artist themselves even get hit with copyright claims from time to time from their own distributors.
