In a Swedish setting, freeze dried food will almost allways work. We have a lot of water in rivers, creeks and lakes. And most of them is safe to drink from without any purification.
@josephvanas63522 жыл бұрын
Never been to Sweden but the tap water in Norway at least was better than any bottled water and came out of the tap ice cold. I assume it is similar water sources in Sweden if that is the case there probably would be no need for purification of natural water although you would still probably want to heat it up if you could and that would kill any nasties in it.
@darkoflight49382 жыл бұрын
@@josephvanas6352 Hi and greetings from Sweden! Oh, our tap water is just wonderful. I´ve learned that, that is almost not the case around the world. The irony of it all is that Swede´s buy a lot of bottled water anyway.... Go figure... While hiking I usually purify my water just in case. That pure water in nature is probably also a sort of luxury. But don´t assume Sweden is some sort of heaven of clensiness. We got our fare share of people dumping crap everywhere. But all in all and in comparison I guess we fair alright. And yes, the tap water is ice cold. And of course, in a pinch one would use snow at wintertime.
@josephvanas63522 жыл бұрын
@@darkoflight4938 Thank you for the reply! Trust me if Sweden in terms of people dumping things is similar to Norway or even has more people dumping things than Norway it still puts it at 99% cleaner than any city or state in the US. As far as tap water goes I have done my fair share of mountaineering and backcountry hiking and the water out of the tap in Norway is just like drinking from a mountain stream, clean and cold. Like you I still always filter my water when outdoors just in case its just not worth getting giardia half way through a hike.
@Rack472 жыл бұрын
@@josephvanas6352 The tapwater in the bigger cities such as Stockholm, Uppsala etc isn't the best but you don't need to buy bottled water. But I currently live up in the mountains, close to the Norwegian border, and the tap water here is a lot better than any bottled water I've tasted.

Yes as many have pointed out it's a lot of food. But you need a lot of food to keep your body temp up in freezing weather. The colder it is the harder your body need to work to keep an even temperature and that burns calories like crazy.

Having done one or two winters within the Arctic Circle on military exercises the highlight of the day is your scran (food). Some four to five thousand calories a day is required when skiing and doing all those soldiering things and carrying all your kit up and down mountains! Hot food is a must. Eat what you can, as fast as you can! You aren't in a Michelin star restaurant; get real. Ration pack food contents are fairly similar to whatever country they originate from. The weight and size of the ration pack is the key. Admittedly taste is important but my taste buds were destroyed within six months of joining!!! Review the contents by all means but do not forget what these items are designed for and who is going to be "troughing" (eating) them. Having been around a bit I have yet to find a ration pack to defeat the British 24 hr one, but I am slightly bias!!

I like the concept. 24 hour ration (which people apparently can't understand based on the comments) for cold weather should be high carb, high fat, and encourage snacking at any stop more than five minutes. I like there is enough in here that if you have more than three guys, everyone has stuff to trade, which means you force a coherency check at every stop. And it takes a lot of water, which isn't a problem in real winters and basically forces hydration (people don't hydrate when it is really cold). But I have some concerns- none of the four entrees can be stuffed in your clothes with you to thaw and then eaten without melting snow. I suppose the tuna and tortilla could count towards that (as a fifth entrée), but tuna even in oil is low in fat compared to something like a slice of SPAM, and messy. Fortunately, the Bla brand items look like you can add water, seal it, and stick it in your parka, I would just want to see that tactical consideration addressed without the need to open the entree even though it would add weight. And the non-gusseted, non sealable pounces for the protein shakes is iffy, and despite hydration I'd like to swap one for a pair of whey-based protein bars. And granola or nut bars in the place of one of the cereals. But that's just me.
@TheRedLocker2 жыл бұрын
I know this response comes late: Active army here. The "wet" meals work during most winter time. But getting these and warm them is immensely better for the body then a half thawed "wet" one. The new packs from outmeal also is a bit different then this one but works great . I usually have two 24H packs on me during winter, one with just the food. One with all the snacks from the last few days. So during a 12h ski I could snack on that if there is not time for warming up one of these. But I've rarely been in enough of a hurry to not have time to warm one of these, melt my snow, make some coffee, change shirts 2 times, change socks and dig my snow pit during a long brake.

Curios why you would leave the bag partly open, you aren’t cooking it so you don’t need to worry about it blowing up. Also leaving it open leaves room for water to escape as vapor causing it to improperly reheat.

When I was in the Swedish army during my conscription back in 98-99 we got the classic anonymous tincan with random content to heat for field dinner, we called it "guldburk" or "golden can" in english. Just punch a hole in the top and put it on the fire for five minutes. I always had a small plastic bottle of tabasco and some salt, pepper and sugar from fast food joints in a uniform pocket to season the food but overall they were pretty good. Most of the time out in the green or white we had the support company serving food during the day and preparing snack packs for when we went on patrol or recon. Many of us did have a few freeze dried soups and stews in the bottom of the pack if needed and a basic charcoal filter for filtering water. The water here in the north of Sweden is fantastic though so I never get sick from it and I have been drinking from streams in the woods since I was 7 years old. Good video and greetings from Boden, Sweden.

It isn't A meal. It is 24 hours worth of food for high activity in cold weather. If you're just around the house, this is two days of food. Part of the reason you see so many components is that (1) you might not eat it all, pocket something, and have it in your gear if you have to shed packs, but it also (2) invites snacking so your blood glucose stays more constant, and (3) means that almost everyone has something in their ration they dont like and want to trade. By creating the opportunity to communicate, you force a situation where your team mates can hear you talk- just like hot weather, cold weather casualties often don't realize it until they are screwed, but if you are stuttering and slurring it tells others you have a problem.
@thundercat86013 жыл бұрын
