In every video Steve uploads, I always look forward to moments like 5:20 when we taps the spoon on the cup and it gives off a melody sort of sound. Little editing like that makes me appreciate these videos.

Here in South Africa we have a sort of National Desert called Milktart. It's a thick vanilla custard in a crisp shortcrust pastry and sprinkled with cinnamon. I have a lovely old recipe and I make a lot of them for extra income.

It's funny, the very first time i heard Steve's voice i HATED it, it sounded like it was going to be some dudebro-type of voice, but I quickly turned around on that. It's easily my favourite voice now, mellow and relaxing to listen to as he tears into ancient (and current) military rations for our enjoyment as much as his.

Yeah, this is relaxing talk......opening, studying and enjoying preserved food packets from around the world......such a serene attitude towards food packets. There is a weird enjoyment in subsisting, for a time, on shelf-stable MRE packs. Watching someone else enjoying this type of thing helps it seem like a legit hobby.

it would be typical of the NZDF to have half of it be stuff you can get at the local supermarket xD all except the retort pouches(and contents) and the heater can be found at any supermarket(and probably the custard in the pouch) Also, hot custard is best by itself.

Custard is its own thing, it would be wrong to lump it in with a "pudding" or "dessert". Custard is the dream for sure... would be interesting to try the MRE and compare it to fresh made custard which is possibly something you can't do since you're unfamiliar with custard? Oh and Whittakers is one of our best chocolates in NZ.

I'm disappointed that a New Zealand MRE didn't have Chocolate Fish or Pinky Bar, Hokey Pokey flavoured desert, or even a Cookie Time cookie in it. I don't know if they make powdered L&P but that should be the drink. Glad to see the chocolate is Whittakers, though.

Hokey Pokey Ice Cream is vanilla ice cream with small chunks of crunchy honeycomb toffee in it. Hokey Pokey was what Ice Cream was commonly called back in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

NZ defence get some great rations. I've had a few and they have all been mouth-watering and delicious. The stuff they had in the 90's was even better(although canned). I remember eating a lamb and pea stew back then and it was the best thing I had tasted in my life.

You can buy that sante bar at most Dairies (corner stores) in NZ. NZ'S only domesticly produced chocolate comes from Porirua, where Whitikers is based
