For those worried about drainage - first, lace rock is exceptionally porous. Second, the 'pocket' in the stone is humped in the center, which allows the water to drain from both the front and back of the stone.

I see you used azalea and point out it doesn't grow with this pine in the wild... have you considered using native shrubbery in your compositions, like manzanita or kinnikinnick?

I like seeing the origin of the material being admired and consideration of the container being factored into that. This is not an imported tree in a foreign container mimicking a foreign style. I very much like this.

Gentlemen, Nearly breath taking. Look forward to following the journey of this magestic, regal pine through what I hope will be a long, honored, well appreciated and renowned future. An amazing bonsai: powerful, nearly magica!!! What an experience for your apprentice and you. May you three live long and prosper. Thank you.

When I’ve used rocks without holes I’ve used a technique that comes from old climbing anchors. You clamp a lead fishing weight over a wire. Then smash the weight into the pocket or crevice of the rock. It works well if your pull direction is parallel to the rock surface. Just a thought.

You nailed it, superb composition! Beautiful tree and the perfect stone. Love the accent plants in the composition. I do, however, think that leaving the black aluminum tie wire exposed was unnecessary and not the best look, could have been avoided in favor of epoxying steel tie wires to the bottom of the stone, for what it is worth.

Remember seeing this tree being worked on at your open house, Great tree and the rock is awesome, a great combination. I would love to see a workshop on a Ponderosa Pine and you get to go over the tricks for dealing with a Ponderosa pine. I have two great ones from workshops from Brussels and have issues with getting branches to stay in place after removing wire as well as getting needles to reduce, Thanks for considering.

love the use of a pencil to prod the soil loose. feels a little ironic when you think about it, using a dead tree implemented into a tool to help repot a living one.

Thanks! That must've been a white, flowering chaenomeles/quince/chojubai in the cream pot. (I can't imagine any prunus/apricot/ume being in bloom yet, even in TN.) The trunk and bark look great, and the ramification is coming along too. The trunk on that ponderosa pine might not be to everyone's liking, but it definitely has character. It reminds me of a brush stroke that people usually associate with the literati/bunjin style, but the girth of that trunk says something else. I look forward to seeing it the next time you or Cameron works on it. Great work, as always.

Sincere question. Would trad climbing hardware such as nuts and cams work for anchoring to stone like this? The general philosophy to that type of climbing is to stay safe without damaging the rock. I also think it could look cool if you chose not to hide it.

gorgeous tree and beautiful rock. i love that you did not cement or drill into the rock but instead showed it the respect it deserves. this, to me, is the appropriate mindset for bonsai. would prefer something other than azaleas and such lush moss, to complement tree and rock though. something with a drier, more 'colorado' feel to it....

I honestly don't like the tree a lot (due to its natural structure with that long straight trunk, not because of the styling), but that stone is really its natural pot, great choice, in my opinion.
