Epic Red Drum Battle in Wrightsville Beach, NC

I had a nice battle with a red drum (or redfish) the other day. I was fortunate enough to catch it on video! I give a few pointers on things to look out for and how I landed the fish during the movie.
The tide was just about at its peak and there was a new moon this day. Bait fish and working birds were abundant in the tidal creeks and so were the Drum!

Cool. We got some 40-50mph winds and rain. Couple tree limbs down, no biggie. But the Outer Banks right above us apparently got it pretty bad.

I caught a 12lb. drum in banks channel from shore near the Cost Guard station several years ago. I never had too much luck where you were fishing near (I think near Station One or Sea Path condo complex?) That is a really nice puppy you got there! Oyster beds are hell to deal with!

Yeah man. These fish can and do get extremely large. And you are correct, right out in front of Sea Path. Pretty hot spot when the tide is right.

I caught several around in banks channel behind Corbett st. in the years past. Sometimes they crowd around the undersides of docks. I had less luck (at low tide) around Harbor Island near the old metal corrosion testing station. High tide is better there for drum i think.

Where did you put in at? Do you ever fish Pages Creek? My mother in law lives in Bayshore area and I was looking for a spot to put in there.

Usually I put in at the public access. Sometimes my trips are 10 miles or more a day to get where I want to go...

cayogator I was using a little hand held scale I believe? There's likely a bunch of room for error on those things..... Fortunately our slot fish are gauged by length, so weight is just nice to know....

It's a Fish Grip. Available at most tackle shops. Great item to have on hand, and they FLOAT!

Penn Fierce 2000 with 8# braid (or 10#, I cant remember) on a no name $30 rod. Nice little combo that I caught a ton of fish on. I have since upgraded to Battle II 3000 on 7' Tsunami Custom rods and 15# braid for all of my kayak rods.

Hey thanks! I appreciate the comments. This is obvious the drum from my bait review, but I thought it merited its own vid. Threw it together last night during our hurricane, if you could call it that! Lol
