It may just be recency bias, but I think Disquiet Gods is my favourite of the series so far. I love when Ruocchio really leans into the weird Lovecraftian stuff

I’m halfway through DG and I can say that so far, out of all books I the series, it’s becoming my fav. I’m in tears just by thinking about some of the quotes there. It answered so many questions I had about my faith, it has really touched me like no other sci-fi book has. “We are beasts of burden, we men. We struggle, and by that struggle are filled.”

I'm glad to hear that, Katie! It's rare to find a sci-fi series of this caliber now! Now we wait for the final book in the series! :)

Thanks for the video. I just finished the sixth series and loved it. A philosopher, poet, musician, and a scifi fan from early seventies on I find Sun Eater the perfect amalgam of all the best virtues of Dune and Book of the New Sun amongst the great tradition of the questing Big Story of the Why and What. Ruocchio does bow to to the likes of Herbert and Wolfe, but then rises his head to new hights.

This is perfect timing, my copy of Disquiet Gods arrives today! I will probably be starting it this weekend after I finish The Lies of Locke Lamora. I am beyond excited but I still have the novellas left so I’M NOT DONE! I love this series so much, it has been with me through some very difficult times and Kingdoms of Death is the first piece of media I have ever cried at. Thank you Petrik and Daniel Greene- I love these books SO much.

You're so welcome! And happy to hear you love this series. Kingdoms of Death is brutal... It's rare to feel like my heart is being chopped to pieces again now. But that book did it.
@CombativeRoboGuy6 ай бұрын
@@PetrikLeo Yeah, Kingdoms of Death got me and what was really brutal for me was I didn’t realize how much I loved that cast of characters until they were gone. I was on the train of “Sun Eater is good but not particularly great. It has great moments but nothing in my favorites” but then it hit me like Berserk did but with a little bit more hope and I just cried at the end.

I've been waiting for this review, because I wanted to admit that I am now a fan of this series. I was struggling to get into book 1, but it caught my attention when Hadrian woke up on an unfamiliar planet, and then kept me reading when he challenged the priest to a duel to the death. Petrik, I could hear the emotion in your voice, and I understand how you could be affected by the writing. It has me in it's grasp now too. And I chuckled out loud when you mentioned the "Ruocchano" 😂 Keep the great content coming!

Incredible review!!! I just finished the book and loved it, and totally agree on the first Sabratha section providing great material for the art scenes…though the competition with the later stuff will make art decisions so tough! Your line of Ruocchio “commanded his imagination to fire at will” with the remaining story arcs was so great-you are crushing it brother, and I’m so happy you’ve been able to bring so many more eyes to this epic masterpiece of a series!!

Just when you thought this series couldn't possibly get even more incredible, it did. One of my favourite parts of the series is the archaeology that happens throughout and the feeling of dread it helps to slowly create as Hadrian discovers the hidden truths of the universe.

For me, Disquiet Gods was my least favorite book in the series, Demon in White being the best followed by Empire of Silence and Ashes of Man
@PetrikLeo6 ай бұрын
Oh that is an interesting ranking! Happy to hear Demon in White as your top, though! Didn't expect Empire of Silence on the second spot!
@danielbujdos6 ай бұрын
Sadly, for me this was the weakest novel in the series. It felt as tired as Hadrian at this point, unfortunately. So much potential, so many cheap shortcuts. In several cases it felt like a betrayal of the promises presented in ‘Demon in White’. Instead of building up on the previous books, the author takes a lazy approach when resolving some pending questions. The treatment of the side characters was also rather disappointing - at first their inclusion made me excited, but every single one of them turned out to be inexcusably underused. Why tell and not show? Hopefully, some of them will get their chance to shine in the last book. E.g. Cassandra - I also read all short stories that served as prequels to ‘Disquiet Gods’ and I couldn’t wait to see her in action in this novel. What I got, however, was an underwhelming side character mostly just standing somewhere around. And how a certain princess was written off in a strange flashforward…? I don’t understand some decision Christopher Ruocchio made :(
@PetrikLeo6 ай бұрын
Hey, that's fair! Although I disagree with some things you said, but I, too, would love more of Cassandra. And Jadd. I have faith there will be more to her in Shadows Upon Time, though. She certainly earned a spot in our hearts through the short stories, and I think that's why we felt that way about Cassandra. As for the rest, I think Edoauard, Ramanthanu, are utilized properly. Cannot wait to see more of Olorin, too! Feels like Shadows Upon Time will have to be the biggest of the series! :D
