For me he built a little bomb. Everything especially the freezer will leak and everything is in the electricity. Funny job.

Informative video. I appreciate you sharing the mistakes as well as the success’s. I do have a question. What does the salt do? Shad being, as far as I know, fresh water fish. I would think the salt would kill them. Thank you and tight lines.
@StarkeyOutdoors Жыл бұрын
The salt helps keeps them slimy and seems to keep them alive. Most guides put it in their bait tank on the boat. Just ad a couple cups per 500gal. Don't over do it.

@@StarkeyOutdoors woul I need to do that to minnows as well ?

Probably wouldn't hurt.You can buy the bait saver crystals as well which salt is the main ingredient I believe. @@kennethpierce7304

You could put a large foam filter on the pump intake to prevent the fish from getting stuck on the pump intake screen and the foam can be rinsed out every 1-2 weeks depending on the level of fish waste

Pasta strainer should reduce the suction at the pump filter by increasing distance from pump and increasing the surface it pulls from
@larrylaye92762 жыл бұрын
Im watching this because im considering an attempt to keep pogies aka menhaden. Tournament anglers have a huge advantage being able to pen baits. Those who live on the waterway can pen bait.

it's fine for the sock filter to be in the water cause if u push it tight it will only use a small part of the filter

If you build anymore tanks best thing to use and not need silicone or flex seal use uniseals

This is great. How are you liking it after a couple of years. Any failure points
@StarkeyOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Well. The cooling part isn't very effective. I'm trying to cool too much water and it cycles through too fast. The temp drop on the outlet is only a couple degs. It only cycles the whole 500 gallons twice an hr at best. The heating part works great except the heaters go bad every now and again. They are cheap enough. The pump and filter works good. The sock filters are great. I use it mainly to put my minnow buckets in and let them float around. Not as much for shad any more. Also put crappie and cats in it when I'm lazy to clean them. They will live for months. Long reply.

@@StarkeyOutdoors thanks for the reply. That is great. I have a commercial bait dealer license and will be selling shad to some local shops for big bass and stripers. We are trying to get everything set up

I have a 150 gallon tank. Do you think 7cf will be enough to keep that cool or should I just buy a big freezer. My tank is outside but is in the shade most of the day. Only sun on it is 11:30-3:00. Alabama heat is horrible. Bluegill is mostly what I’m keeping in it.
@StarkeyOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Not sure. My freezer system is helping keep it down but im not running enough through it to make a huge difference. The water is about 10 deg cooler the freezer but it isn't pushing enough through to make a big difference in a 500 gallon tank. I think its moving about 5 gallons per min. The heater portion works great though. Ive had the same shad in there since February. Bluegill shouldn't be any problems. Use a chlorination filter and also chemicals a day before putting them in there. Good luck.

A word of extreme caution: make sure you're plugging EVERYTHING into a GFCI receptacle (electrical outlet)! Nice job on the build!

I think what may have killed your fish is the silicone you used. Fish tanks use a special silicone just for fish tanks.

Hey dude I am starting on making a minnow tank with a freezer any words of advice on trying to seal it? You made me nervous
@StarkeyOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I never could get mine to stop leaking. I sealing the seams with flex glue and then went over the whole inside with flex seal spray and it still leaked. It swells out under pressure and splits the seams I think. You might try using this 3m product. amzn.to/3GvUTzY it needs a little water on it to set it off and takes a while to dry but its the best out there.It could have just been my freezer designs. I ended up coiling up pex line inside of mine like a radiator. Its helps some but not enough for 500 gallons.
@leolldankology2 жыл бұрын
@@StarkeyOutdoors copper tubing inside the freezer would work better than pex.

I forget now but I think it was around $1300. The cooling portion didn't work that great and I unplugged the freezer. The rest works good. Im still using it daily.

Just FYI 5200 is not considered aquarium safe but Flex Seal is so as long as you have it all covered you should be ok. Always use straight aquarium safe silicone for any bait tank applications.
