Hello everyone as you all know gizzard shad are one of the best flathead catfish baits as well as a top bait for all catfish and one of my favorite baits for catching catfish. Thanks for your advice about the Sure Life Foam Off and add salt. I remember, cast net and got tons of baits and put inside my 5 gallon bucket with B15 Marine Metal aeration System Power Bubbles, it started having a bubble bath inside the bucket. So, i kept using a small net handle to get the bubbles out of the bucket and recycling fresh water from the sea to keep the temperature at colder level and clean out the bubbles. I'll give your advice a try the next time i go fishing for baits! Cheers!

An old aquarium keeper's trick is to freeze a number of 2 liter plastic bottles and use them like jumbo, reusable, ice cubes. If one wants to just keep river/lake water from getting warmer a single bottle is probably sufficient for 20 gals. If you actually want to chill water it might take several at a time but they last long enough that one can refreeze them quickly enough that only two sets are needed. I use them to take up dead space in my freezer even when I don't need them and they help keep both my freezer and aquarium cool if the power goes out. Cheers!

Chris I fish a lake in NC Piedmont area. The same lake that Dieter fishes. I love gizzard shad, my problems finding them. It’s almost August and would like to start learning how and where shad are in all seasons. Where would you start looking now in a lake? Thanks

The first place I’d look would really depend on if the lake had a thermocline present. If it did I would concentrate On the depths that are above it. And one thing to keep in mind is if you find them deeper in the day time and are having a tough time catching them go back at night. They often times will move up towards more shallow water and won’t be able to see things as well. Hope this helps you out, let me know the outcome please!

It can depend from day to day. If a big cold front comes in they will go deeper like 20+ ft but on warm days they may be up in 2 ft.

I prefer to use a bucket to sort and cull before putting them in the bait tank. The flexible "gardening" buckets like Tractor Supply sells works perfect. After 3 or 4 successful throws, my sorting bucket is full of junk and pretty nasty, but my bait tank water is clear. I always use lake water, salt, Shad Keeper, Foam Off as needed, and frozen bottles of Nestle Pure Life water to keep temps down. (The bottles won't bust and can be frozen over and over) I often catch bait before daylight and fish until dark or later, and I never have a gizzard or threadfin die in my Xtreme Bait Tank.

How to throw a cast net. I've made hundreds of throws, sometimes my shoulder or back gives out before I get enough bait. You make it look so effortless and make nice pretty circles to boot. What's you method for throwing the net? Are there certain brand/types of nets that seem to last longer or open better?

@@chrissouders476 Thanks. Found the videos and have been working on your technique in the back yard. For me, using one of those cheap and light 7"? nets from WallyWorld yields about the same results as the old technique, but the old 8"? Calusa, with 1.5lb/ft weight, well, it greatly reduces the the amount of effort required in throwing that net, plus the net travels further out. My circles still suk, but the effort in throwing the heavy net is greatly reduced. No dirty lead line in my mouth or draped over my shoulder. Having not thrown the Calusa in a while (only use it on the boat in deep water while the cheap nets are used in shallow water where the chance of getting snagged is high) the difference in quality of the two nets is immediately apparent. The feel and suppleness, the way the net throws and opens, and especially tangles, wow, night and day improved. The lead and braille lines are always a tangled mess with the cheap net, which is a huge bummer when trying to load and target fish from the bank. Unfortunately, the old Calusa is ageing and will soon need to be replaced, so, thanks for the Fitec recommendation. I will check into their offerings. Happy fishing. Wish I was.

Great info Chris. I have a couple situational questions that would probably help alot of us who don't have bait tanks. I have a small 20gal live well in my boat, and alot of people using Jon boats etc for fishing don't have any live well, my question is would it be better to keep a cooler of ice and put the fish directly on ice to keep them from rotting over the day and use that for cut bait, then take the rest home and freeze them? I mostly only net threadfins for some reason and they never stay alive in my live well even while it's circulating if it's hot outside. I'm sure I could use some ice to cool it down like you suggest but is it worth the hassle you think over just throwing some fish on ice if your planning to chunk them? Due to my work schedule I sleep during the day and usually get out to either Nolin or the Ohio river around 2PM in the afternoon. Do you still use this same technique for hunting down bait when it's already hot outside in the late afternoon if you plan to fish that evening? Thanks so much, love your channel. I also don't have a side scan sonar (I'm begging the wife for one) My down image and 2D is really not useful in shallow water trying to net shad. I gotta be right on top of them and by that time they are spooked and bolt. Any suggestions for those of us shad netting open water without side scan to detect them or we pretty much gonna have to fork out $400 for a low end side scan sonar before we can do this effectively?

Hey Soggy Bottom River Boys , thanks for the questions and yes if your not going to be able to keep them alive but want to use them as cut bait then the next best thing to do is make a salt ice water salutation that way as soon as you put them in it they get shocked and chilled which makes for much better bait than just on ice. Now once you get them all caught and they have been in it for 15 mins or so you can just drain the water off and your bait is good to go. Now I always recommend keeping it alive if you can but this is a secondary alternative. Now when it comes to catching bait there are some things you can look for on top of the water to help you not have to fork out the money for a new sonar. One of the best tips is catch them at night if you can in the summer shad will move towards the top of the water as the sun goes down and will flip or pop the top of the water which lets you know where they are. Also early morning they will still be flipping and pop now as the day goes on they will move a little deeper but say your seeing them in a back water early or at night odds are they well still be there during the day you may just have to keep throwing the net until you find where they are.

Thats ok we have an awesome bait shop up here that handles frozen shad in 6-8 pks, frozen skipjack, live shad i think, live blue gills, live creek chubs and other live or frozen bait. He specialize in everything catfish. Most of it is geared for flatheads. We dont have blues this far up i guess in the Ohio River.

Hey Steven I would start by looking around boat ramps along the rocky areas and concrete at night or early morning so they don't see you if the water is clear and normally shad well come closer to the top at night hope that helps

How do you catch gizzer shad in the winter

Lots of times in the winter months they will group together in back waters or deeper holes near shallow areas. If they are in the shallow back waters you can find them easily by looking for rings on top of the water where they are coming up. If they are in the deeper water its a little tougher. You either have to be able to see them on sonar or just through the net until you find them.

Do you have in suggestions for finding shad in a river that's not very wide? I live in Texas also

Lots of times no matter the size of river the shad will still act the same in general. Back waters, feeder creeks and discharges make good starting areas. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Ok....question....I have shoulders that are useless..no good at all...cannot throw a net...two questions actually.....froze shad from bait shop....is it worth buying?? Second....is there any lure I can use to catch shad???

Good questions Rick and I'd say your not alone. When it comes to bait shop bait some is good and some is worthless. Where are you located I may know a bait dealer in your area. Or it maybe best for you to use an alterative bait like skipjack or bluegill so you know its fresh.

Yea if you use better bait use saltin with it but if you use the sure life shad keeper it already has salt added in so no need to add more. Thanks for watching

Any advice for finding wintertime shad in a river like the miss with tons of current? Most pockets and marinas have ice on them.

Depending on how thick the ice is I have busted it up an ran the shad out from under the ice in to open water to be able to catch them
