EPIC Super Touring Lite race with Joe Moser at the 2023 SCCA Runoffs VIR!

I qualified my Mazda MX-5 on the pole for the SCCA Runoffs at VIR, but while my car has one-lap pace, I knew the race would not be easy. My car , based on the BOP adjustments, races at 400lbs heavier than Joe Moser's CRX and 600lbs heavier than Jose Pena's CRX. This means my tires fall off really quickly and I cannot contend at the end of the race.
As predicted I had a car that competed well for 6 laps, then was barely able to hang on in the draft for the rest of the race, but was never able to challenge for the win, and Joe knew that. Still a great race.
On the motor racing front I compete in SCCA and NASA events around the USA. I race both Spec Miata (SM) and Super Touring Lite (STL) cars. My cars are prepared by OPM Autosports in Atlanta, my SM is powered by Rossini Racing Engines, my STL is powered by Nelson Racing Engines, and both cars are stopped courtesy G-Loc Brake Pads, with contingency support from Hoosier Racing Tire, Toyo Tires and Mazda Motorsports.
On the motorcycle front, I race Hare Scrambles and Dessert Off-Road Races, and do a bunch of long, multi-day trips on adventure bikes around the world.

Thanks for posting these videos, Danny. Your view of Joe's car is the same one I had at Road America decades ago. Back then there were three (!) Mosers running around CenDiv. Your ability to maintain correct lines was great. Continued success to you and your team.

Wow, let me catch my breath! I watched hundreds of racing videos and this one is one of the best I've seen for sure. That was some good stuff right there.

thanks Michael, and if you think it was exciting to watch in video, just imagine how exciting, and draining it was, to race in real life. I was physically worn out when I got out of the car!

I was there watching the race between turns 3 and 4 and I've been shopping NC MX-5's all week because of it.

Question I forgot: What motor are you running in STL? The original 2 liter with high compression and hot cams? You weren't giving up much to that B18C on the straights. And do you know what motor the STU NC's run?

Thank you for the props L8rApex! I run a 2007 NC. The engine we use for STL is the 2.0L MZR engine. We run 11.0 compression with special pistons, cams etc. We run Motec ECU and set the RPM Limit between 8000 and 8400 depending on the track. I personally use the 5-speed gearbox and altered rear end ratios, so that the shift points closely match those of my Spec Miata so that I retain the same muscle memory for each track, but most do run the 6-speed. For me the 6-speed ratios are not that ideal. Sam Nelson in Atlanta builds my engines - hope that helps - and for the STU, most run the 2.5L version of the MZR, although some have tried with the rotary but it gives up too much torque

@@dannysteyn thanks for the answer, just what I was thinking. And I knew I had seen rotaries in STU Miatas in years past.

What a race! I thought all that fighting in the first couple laps was going to allow 3rd place to get closer, but you guys were flying!
