Whats kind of neat here is how the bucktail stands out in this scenario despite loads of bait around, I think do to its size. In an identical scenario on menhaden (peanut sized), I have found its not as easy with the bucktail to 'stand-out' like it did here. Seems like a balance of 'how far to I want to blend in with the bait' vs. 'stand out enough to be seen and eaten'. What are your thoughts Skinner?

Beautiful day, great beach and I love the sound of the waves on the the small rocks. The fishing was ok too haha would love to have a day like that. How do you keep from getting wind knots in your braided line? I went to a fishing store to get a rod and reel to do the same kind of fishing and they gave me braided line. I had so much trouble with it I went back to mono.
@jonfisher9214
@jonfisher9214 6 ай бұрын
I've found the key to avoiding knots in braid is to avoid letting the line go slack. When I cast I hold my index finger just off the spool as the lure is touching down. Just before it hits the water I stop the line with my finger. When you start winding make sure you have a curve in the rod to keep it under tension. I use mono for 90% of my fishing but for this kind of lure fishing braid gives you a huge advantage. I'd recommend giving it another try.

Hey Mr Skinner, I’m brand new to the fall run and I have a question. I’ll be fishing the surf at island beach state park in NJ starting this upcoming weekend to thanksgiving. What time of day do the Stripers bite? Is the bite throughout the day or in the morning/afternoon? And how would one find stripers if they’re not hitting the top of the water? Thank you if you see this!
@redrover3259
@redrover3259 7 ай бұрын
I'm not Mr. Skinner but would suggest topwater, poppers and Spooks at dawn, even as the sun is coming up, to locate fish, then again sunset and even into the night with dark swimmers and bucktail jigs. They seem to be on the feed at those hopurs and less skittish. Of course blitzes like these can occur at any time when the fish are on schools of bait. If you have a 4x4, can you get a permit to drive on the beach? Makes chasing schools a lot easier.

Hi John - I was out there over the past two weeks and hit three days of these blitzes from the shore, two of which were during that high NW wind. My original plan was to target albies, but they were few and far between. Are these blitzes unusual on the Sound and for how long do you think they might continue? Are you still due for an influx of albies or was this just an off year for them?

The clear water up there is impressive, as well as the number of fish from shore. I'm in lower Cape May county on the Delaware Bay side and you don't see anything like that down here. Why don't you keep striped bass, just don't like the way they taste?
