A sturdy net is a perfect first thing to grab if a boat hook isn't handy. The last thing you want is someone grabbing a gaff or something sharp, while a net is pretty safe. Just keep the netting out of their face.

Hi John, so glad you didn’t get hurt falling off the boat. My husband Robert and I lived in EH NY. We had a 26 ft boat and fished every weekend, but had to move. We are in PA and don’t get to EH much, due to health issues . Miss fishing, and eating the fish, so good. I enjoy watching you and other on tv now.

Hey John I work on the water for a living offshore. We wear pfds working on deck at all times. Now I wear them when I fish too. The inflatable horse collars are not cumbersome, are cheap (about $200) and will save your life. Weird stuff happens on the water, seasoned guys drown all the time. Stay safe out there and thanks for content.

good point about the cell phone. almost lost mine overboard a few times. i've been better recently about backing up the phone to the laptop and then backing up the laptop to an external hard disk. nj just passed a law - all boats under 26' pfd must be worn from nov 1 to may 1. i usually only wear mine when anchoring up at night for giant new jersey rainbows and lake trout in my 16' aluminum. after seeing how easy it is to go over, will be wearing one more often. amazing how you got back in the boat so quickly. glad you're ok.

It shows how quickly something can go wrong quickly on the water, even with someone that has the experience you have. I dumped my kayak while fishing in our lake by just turning toward the back too far and the Kayak went over, There is a shock that takes place those few seconds in the water when you never expected to be there. Its eye opening.

Hey John, have done a bunch of dumb things on the boat you got me on that one have to fall out. Two cell phone in the Navasink river and sat on a plug and put the treble in the back of my thigh. Did my own surgery and cut the skin down to the hooks. Aways carry peroxide, and flooded it and had my nephew put on some baid aids and fished the rest of the day. Had my wife dress it when i got home. Had my sons friend swing a blue into my side and agan get trebles in me. This time had my son slice it out. The damm thing was going crazy while in me to I managed to get him unhooked. The screaming and cursing was pretty epic. Super clocked the back of my head on a slippery ramp launching, went out and fished with a headache. Other not as eventful things also. Yes the no pfd with a capable partner is some what ok but just proves it chancey. They say normally in an major aircarft crash usually. 3 things go wrong. For you leaky boat, fuse blown, and plug in from the outside. The other thing in your favor is water still kinda warm and air temp pretty warm. Yes if your had say jeans on they would have never dried, Ok john thankfully just some lessons learned and no injuries. stay safe...... walt

Appreciate your honest display of what can go wrong, but still scratching my head as to why you replaced one old leaky riveted boat with another. I know, I know - it was kept on a lake in NH. Also, I bent over my bleed bucket last week and almost saw my TM remote go in from the lanyard on my PFD - made me wonder if they're water- tight, proof, resistant. How's yours?

First of all …things can go wrong in a split second .. thankfully all ended well. In the area you were fishing , I have a good idea where it is , would my Bristol Skiff 17’ /40 hp be enough to handle those waters ? The only thing that would have made it funnier if if the 4 Johns were with you and would have broken your nuts to no end. Seriously, you cant be too careful out there. That's a good example for why you should always have a PFD (as you typically do). Todays inflatables are barely noticeable and worth the price. Thank you for not editing that out as its important for novices and experienced boaters to see how even the most experienced people on the water aren't exempt from risk. As usual, you and your brother had a great trip otherwise. Outstanding video.
