You know we need to stop fretting over "higher mileages" the biggest problem is owner neglect, if serviced and properly maintained this generation of Japanese bikes will easily hit 100,000 miles and more. They were built to ride and enjoy definitely the sweet spot in terms of superbike development

A friendly tip from a winter rider who never uses heated gear: the less the layers, the looser the fit (as air is the best insulator), the less you get cold. The only real winter gear I have is cold weather gloves and a balaclava, for the rest a technical underlayer plus riding textile pants/trousers is enough. Tape helmets vents if it's too cold inside.

Especially built in this era, a lot less sensors & electronics to go wrong. I'd not rule out the RSV though on reliability - it might be 2000's Italian, but if you sort a couple of bits on them (starting system, clutch) they are rock solid too. That Rotax power plant isn't fragile.

Have had my K3 for 10 years, have riden 30 000 km (78 000 km total) with it. Only problem really was worn out steering head bearing and that awful front brake. Rode from Finland to watch IOMTT and back, 10.6 quarter mile drag racing, multiple track days and commuting to work. You can really rely on this bike, SFT dropped one in the bottom of a lake and after drying cylinders its was running like a charm. 😅

One of my regrets. I once bought a K4. Knackered engine. Replaced it. Repaired it piece by piece. Brought it back to stock and superb condition - but didn't then eventually keep the blighter. Great, great bike. If you look after it- good for double that mileage. Gonna have one of those again. Had a 954 Blade, which was an ex Honda mule in retrospect, busted gearbox unfortunately, was on a real downer, then had my first K3 and just gelled immediately. Fit like a glove. From despair to elation. 🙂

It's nice to see 03 bikes, when you're familiar with them. Great video! But it's a little surprising that not all of them remember the technical specifications of what was by far the most powerful bike of that era. The Gixer was the king of the time. Suzuki claimed 164hp (and 168kg, weight at the time without fluids, battery, tyres). At the time Fast Bikes ran all the bikes on JHS dyno and the gixer did just over 150 when the 03 R1 was around 140. So it's no big surprise that now 153 and 137. And the Suzuki also has ram air, which the R1 doesn't, so in reality the gixer is actually much more powerful and faster than the R1. Keep up great vids!

I'm 6.1 tall and to make my GSXR1000 K4 Eurotrip comfy I put Biketek adjustable foot pegs. They rotate 360 degrees so you can put them up down back or forward. I was putting them up for track days and down for EuroTrips they worked like a dream! And I got a duble bubble screen for the trips. And Oxford soft panniers that were super easy to put on and take off. Every time I was going somewhere to sleep just took them off and carried them like a bag. Big enough for a two weet trip.

19:30 couldnt agree more there is a fews reason why manufactures put on auto chain tensioners 1. USER/Operator error in adjustment 2. auto tensioner is dynamic and keeps the chain at the correct tensioner when hot or cold or under load 3. ease of maintenance if your thinking about putting on a manual tensioner do yourself a favor save some money down the road buy an oem tensioner ,cam chain and guides. WHEN that manual tensioner fails it will be far more expensive of a fix than having just bought a oem tensioner, chain, and guides

I had the silver bullet R1 for a couple of years, I toured all over Europe with it with lots of luggage, saddle bags, big bag on top of the rear seat and a tank bag, though it wasn't the most comfy to ride long distance ( 10 hours per day ) I still loved it mainly because of its shape but it wasn't the fastest R1 around back then. The following year I bought a R1 2005 which was a completely different cake altogether, faster, longer and more comfy, oh and just to mention not even that exact Suzuki could keep up with me back in the days..Fast forward to now I own a Yamaha MT 09- 2016 and what a gem of motor it is, I love it to bits, truly impressed with the torque and the speed, it does frighten me I must admit it. Have fun while you can and be careful out there

Actually the K4 had 2 big pads each caliper instead of 4 and there were working great, given the proper pads and brake lines. There were minor tweaks between the K3 and K4. The 4 had the S on the tank instead of suzuki, I think different injectors and I remember had slightly different engine castings. Awesome bike and loads of torque mid rpm. If the wire on the ECU was orange/black(not sure) was most likely disconnected to remove the FI error caused by the useless exhast valve that was famous to fail early on. Removing the valve stepper motor allowed the valve to stay always open and cutting the wire from the wiring loom to get the error away. In my opinion, had much better throttle response without the valve, I think it was called SET valve. I still have my K4 bought brand new in 2004.

@chrisg4rr377 and what happens when you drop an on fire bike with an open fuel cap on its side? 😂

@@chrisg4rr377 but what's the point doing that (getting burned and making the fire worse) when you have to get off anyway, and it doesn't let you get any more fuel in the tank (assuming, like 99.99% of bikes, that the fuel tank is symmetrical)

That’s a lorra lorra bike for the money! old Gixxers just go on forever.. Pearls of wisdom spouted by the boys at the end.. Old bikes are the answer.. I have 7 90s sport bikes and more than happy 😄✌🏻

Which would I choose as I have all 3 bikes in my shed and also owned each one back in the day. Well I did so many miles touring Europe on My K3 I did use to say. if I was circling the world, this is the bike I would choose, with a great seat position, I never ached, it’s rock solid, conventional engineering and it’s fast, so it should easily win this test. The one I want and hope to win is the Aprilia, as the Mille has given me the most enjoyable ownership and riding experiences over the years.
