I love how just before Poseidon drowns the whole fleet, the text of the chorus isn’t complete and just ends on a timid "mercy". As if the people on board of the ships cry out to Poseidon to be spared

"you totally could have avoided all this had you just killed my son, but no" is one of my favorite parts Because it shows his priorities, he doesn't care about his son, this is about his reputation and standing. If he'd just killed the Cyclops he wouldn't have had to go through all this.

I'd argue that it isn't about Poseidon not caring about his son - it's mocking the hypocrisy behind Odysseus's supposed righteousness. What Odysseus did was cruelty masked in kindness. If he had just killed Poseidon's son, as he was willing to do with another helpless child earlier, not only would this not be a problem he's facing for practical reasons, it also would have spared his son the shameful fate of a life as a crippled pariah.

YESSSS MY FAVORITE SONG IN THIS SAGA!!!!! I love how it calls out Ody sparing Polyphemus despite the fact that he killed an infant well before that. Although I like the interpretation that the only reason he spared the cyclops because of Polites telling him that mercy is still an option in Open Arms. :)
