I love this song, ever since I heard it during the Symphonic Synergy concert livestream. The official music video Epica released was so spectacular. I think one of their best videos to date. However, I feel like this lyric video was totally unnecessary. There are some nice visual aspects, but I simply cannot agree with the decision to use AI. Epica is my favourite band since 2007. Their music literally changed my life. I’ve been a dedicated fan and have always marvelled at the fact that they remain true to their original symphonic metal sound, but somehow always innovate and raise the bar. I can see there is human work involved in the making of this video (by Dave Letelier), but I also feel like that they should have disclaimed that it is partially done by AI. It is very obvious. The legality of AI is not settled and has great implications for artists, but it will affect all sectors… Including the music industry. I would have assumed a band like Epica with their deeply philosophical lyrics and artistry would be more cautious to implement this technology If AI was used for their video without disclosure, what would the future be like? Would merchandise also be “designed” with AI? What would then be the incentive to purchase that? When do they start using AI to “compose” the music? Will an AI version of Simone eventually take over once she cannot reach the high notes any more? Would it still be worth while to listen to “their” music? Sure, AI generated music is not quite on this level yet, but what about the next album? I think transparency is key. Also fair use and fair compensation for the artists that the AI is “trained” on. I understand this burden does not fall on Epica alone, but rather the tech companies developing it… But they as artists and we as fans can make our voices be heard. Sure, one “experimental” Epica video might not be the end of the world, but they’re not helping the situation either. It is quite hard for me to dismiss this attempt as being “nothing”, when this might only be the beginning.

The use of AI in some "shots" of this video is kind of a bold choice from a group of artists. I like the concept for the lyric video, but endorsing AI even after the craft that you, Epica, usually puts on every product (like the special shows and your merch) is dissapointing.
