I am so grateful for finding your channel. My daughter lives in BC and I have never been. I'm living on a small pension so she always travels to me. My daughter always raves about the beauty and takes photos for me but nothing beats traveling through it with the family. I live in Northern Ontario and Ontario is no slouch when it comes to lovely places but it's different. You seem to be very decent people that I would be proud to know. Thank you.

I read Thor Heyerdahl's book, Kon Tiki, while a junior in high school and that had to be 1963 or 1964. It was so good and intriguing I read it in a weekend. On Monday, I turned in a book report and got an A on it. Wow, I am getting old. My wife is a prolific reader and she's always recommending books to me. She'll read four or five books to my one in a week's time. I love to document my adventures and write reviews on gear I've purchased. I write in those Composition books I pick up at Walmart. I like to take notes as I watch You Tube videos like yours and hopefully one day I'll be able to travel to those recommended areas. While serving in the military 23 years, I spent 16 of them overseas, mostly in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. My favorite country is Switzerland. Backpacking and skiing in the Alps was phenomenal. My wife and I would love to return to Maui, my home, but this current situation is preventing our accomplishing it. Your adventures have really helped us "survive" the stress of this awful year, between the pandemic and the political atmosphere. We're living vicariously through your adventures. So, thank you and your family for that. Happy Holidays and be safe.
@EFRT

That’s wonderful, I hope to become more prolific with my reading. There are just so many good books to read! Switzerland looks like such a beautiful country and I definitely hope to go there one day. I have friends there that will be able to show us around their beautiful homeland. I do hope you and your wife are able to make it back to Maui and will be praying everything works out for that to happen soon! Thank you for following along with our videos and thank you very much for your service. Merry Christmas! - Caroline

“A fortunate life” Is my recommendation. This was a book I read on quiet nights in the workshop when I was an engineer for a printing company. It got me in the frame of mind for adventure. Born in 1894, Albert Facey lived the rough frontier life of a sheep farmer, survived the gore of Gallipoli, raised a family through the Depression, and spent 60 years with his beloved wife, Evelyn. Despite enduring hardships we can barely imagine today, Facey always saw his life as a "fortunate" one. A true classic of Australian literature, his simply written autobiography is an inspiration. It is the story of a life lived to the full--the extraordinary journey of an ordinary man.

Great video! I read Endurance on my solo sailing trip to Alaska a few years ago. While sailing my 37’ sloop in the Tracy Arm with its house size ice floating in the strong current made the read much more meaningful. Trying to push to the foot of the calving glacier was impossible due to the heavier ice pack gave you a sense of what Shackleton and his crew experienced. Another book I read on this trip was “The Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake” by Samual Bawlf. About a voyage up the west coast in search of the west entrance to the Northwest Passage, the voyage that was kept secret for 200 years. My Alaska trip was to be a shake down before sailing to the South Pacific with my late wife. The 6 month trip was a success, however, sailing without my sailing partner of 32 years was not as enjoyable. I have since, sold my boat, the condo, moved to Alberta where I have taken up over landing with my Toyota diesel Hilux and pursuing my photography and adventure. Keep up the great videos and adventures, maybe see you on a trail someday.

1:00 "We get a lot of rain here" that is the understatement of the century.. Vancouver Island, is one of the wettest places in North American. A lovely little place called HENDERSON LAKE (google it) is the Wettest place in North America, and situated not far from Tofino. 1:27 Radar hill had nothing to do with the attack on Pearl Harbour, it was commissioned 2 years after the attack in 1943 and it was intended as a Cold War installment, against the USSR, not the Japanese. it closed in 1951, and reopened in 1958 as the Tofino Airport. The Site of Radar hill is the site of the Tofino Canso bomber crash On 8 February 1945, Consolidated Canso 11007 was departing RCAF Station Tofino on a routine night anti-submarine patrol of the coastline having been cleared for take-off at 2300 hours and had just passed the end of the runway when the port engine failed. The flight carried 12 personnel, 620 imp gal (2,800 l) of fuel and four 255 lb (116 kg) depth charges. While failing to gain altitude over a forested area the pilot attempted a 180-degree turn to return to the airfield, and impacted the side of a low hill. All on board survived with only minor injuries. Later, the RCAF retrieved all salvageable equipment including radios, radar equipment and machine guns, and detonated the depth charges, leaving a crater. The wreck is in a relatively easy to access location in National Park land (which precludes salvage) close to roads and is a popular destination for hikers despite most of the area being swampy.

May I recommend 'An Unexpected Light' by Jason Elliot. An extraordinary tale of travel in Afghanistan which did more to explain the mysteries of the Middle East to me than anything else I have read. On the sailing front ( I live on a boat) Voyaging the Pacific by Miles Hordern is a terrific account of a single handed sailor in a 28 foot boat crossing the Southern Ocean from New Zealand to Chile and back again. Tania Aebi was just 16 when she set off, alone, to sail around the world. Her book 'Maiden Voyage' is another good read about sailing.

Caroline - if you like sailing books, I recommend 2 from Christian Williams: Alone Together, and Philosophy of Sailing. He has a KZbin channel where you can sample each and even see a 30-min summary video. It is not action/adventure type, but it’ll take you deeper into sailing and what it must be like on a long transoceanic journey. You’re a bright young lady and a great role model I’d like my daughters to learn from. Stay true to your internal compass and close to your wonderful family as you grow up and explore this crazy world.

South Africa has always fascinated me and I can’t wait to truly see and experience it. - Caroline

Thank you for the book recommendations. It’s what gets our minds wandering when we cannot physically. You might really enjoy “Wild Survival” by Laurence Gonzales about who survive and who don’t in extreme situations. “The Dove” by Robin Lee Graham, Maiden Voyage by Tania Albi and Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderfoot are all great sailing reads.

A must read and one of my top 5 books that I think you all would enjoy is Astoria by Peter Stark. “Unfolding over the course of three years, from 1810 to 1813, Astoria is a tale of high adventure and incredible hardship in the wilderness and at sea. Of the more than one hundred-forty members of the two advance parties that reached the West Coast-one crossing the Rockies, the other rounding Cape Horn-nearly half perished by violence. Others went mad. Within one year, the expedition successfully established Fort Astoria, a trading post on the Columbia River. Though the colony would be short-lived, it opened provincial American eyes to the potential of the Western coast and its founders helped blaze the Oregon Trail.”

Hi Caroline, if you liked Kon Tiki, then you might like The Brendan Voyage by Tim Severin. similar toThor Heyerdahl, Tim sets out to prove that something could have occured, in this case, he wanted to prove that the monk St Brendan could have crossed to the Americas before the Vikings did! And in a leather boat made of 48 Ox hides. Recomended.

Hello Roger, thank you for the recommendation, I will definitely add it to my reading list! I read a bit about the monk St Brendan’s voyage in an old book published in 1930 called “The World’s Great Adventure - 1,000 Years of Polar Exploration” By, Francis Trevelyan Miller. It was very fascinating to read so I would love to read Tim Severin’s book! - Caroline

It's always a pleasure to be able to travel with you on the trails. Very inspiring. Especially since I'm stuck in my home office teleworking. I love your videos, the beauty of the images and the calm that emanates from it. (I like the fact that the music is subtle and not too intrusive). By the way, is there a meaning or a story behind the names of your jeeps?

Thank you so much and thank you for watching! Yes, our original Jeep, the ice-blue one is called ‘Vandi’ which means “One who travels” in Dutch since our dad’s family is from The Netherlands. The white Jeep is called ‘Worsley’ which is named after Captain Frank Worsley of Sir. Ernest Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1914-1916 where they attempted to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic Continent. The story of Shackleton’s expedition has inspired us since we first read the book as kids and Captain Worsley’s leadership, bravery and skills in navigation are what made us want to name our Jeep after him. - Caroline
