PLEASE HELP! How do you keep stray cats and other animals out of your yard/garden? My raised planters and all my plants become beds these cats won't go and just lay on plants killing them. Never seen an animal intentionally lay on growing plants like these.

@@nervousbabbs2769 would your plants be able to grow through a "canopy" of chicken wire? tack it to the edges of your planters so it is suspended above soil level. cats hate the feel of chicken wire as much as tin foil.

Note: if you want to direct sow peas, squirrels leave them alone if you force them to root about a quarter of an inch before planting. The chemical change no longer tastes good. Lost almost 2/3 of my planting until we started this method.

I wanna reiterate yet again that you have inspired me, I recently went to the Walmart garden center to browse their clearance and found a half dead star jasmine for $2.50, and now I have a thriving star jasmine near my bedroom window. Never thought I could ever have a plant survive past a week, much less thrive. Thank you for inspiring me ^^

As kids, my mom grew peas. My twin sister and I would go into the garden to pick "pea candy". we didn't grow up eating candy, so this was it for us. LOL! I still love eating them right out of the garden.

Sugar snaps are like candy for me. My brother grew some one year and it was difficult to not eat every one i found. Many ppl feel the same about cherry tomatoes and i think thats one of the best things about gardening, just grazing as you go.

When I was young my grandfather had a large garden in which he had a sizeable pea patch. He would go out and pick his peas for grandma to cook for dinner only to find I had eaten the peas, leaving the pods behind. His harvest was smaller than he would have liked but after getting hot under the collar, he had to forgive me as I at least was getting my veggies.

I'm so glad you mentioned the temperature at which peas start to bolt - I was about to plant some this weekend, but 80 degree days are upon us, so fall it is. Greetings! I’m a beginner gardener, and I was scrolling to find this as a more in depth topic of conversation. So how’s it going for you 2 years in? Peas in particular have me confused. Firstly, I live in Tampa Florida. Right now it is a absolutely blistering heat 90’s+ in the afternoons. Very humid as well with our daily 3-4pm storms. I sprout all my plants indoors. Then transplant to small containers on porch completely shaded. They don’t get any sun and look great until I get put in a raised bed, they seem to yellow, wilt, and stop growing. Sun hits them from 1-630p. I’m feeling like they’d be better off completely shaded at this point. Not really sure what to try. Any suggestions, or tips would be appreciated. Thank you

I loooooove peas! We planted Green Arrow shelling peas in a make-shift low tunnel (heated later on) on 9-14-20 in Chicago. Some grew, it got cold, they died, but the babies plants lived. They just stopped growing but lived. Then here comes March. We warmed up in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. The peas took off! In 2 weeks...we had flowers. About mid-April, we harvested our first pea's. I harvested a bunch more this morning:)

This was incredibly helpful! My daughter got a fairy garden that had snap pea seeds. They quickly took over the plastic garden so I took them out and put them outside with zero research and information. They are now producing pods! I found this looking for when it’s time to harvest. But now I definitely want to grow them again next year, but have a better place in my yard in mind to give them cooler temps and a little shade. Thanks, Kevin!

I grew snap peas for the first time last fall. They came out great, and were so easy. All direct sow. I have more, about two feet tall, for a spring crop. I have been making monthly videos of my garden progress.

I grow peas for the pods only. Stir fry with a little oil, soy sauce, chopped garlic, a touch of white sugar and a tbls of oyster flavored sauce. It’s really good. You can leave out the oyster sauce too.

I just harvest my pea today, end of Apr. Great spring veggie. Easy to grow and no need for a lot of space. I grow mine in container sitting in a south facing balcony

The peas in our garden may not produce this year just because here in central Arkansas, we had cold weather, then just cool(which is when I planted the peas about 2 weeks ago) they are about 4-6 inches tall, however our temps have been mid to high 70s this last week with Plenty of rain. If they produce, they won't make it to the kitchen. We are so bad about just "snacking" while in the garden. 😆 Btw, I love your intercropping of lavender, nasturtium, and the peas. I do a lot of intercropping and I enjoy seeing what other people put together.

Transplanted some pea plants in our garden a week or so ago. Discouraged to already find red spider mites crawling all over the now 4 in. vines. Blasted them with a neem + dr bronners peppermint soap soln two days in a row but still see some crawling about. Not sure if frequent neem application or even spider mites themselves would be harmful to the plant but with all the plants, compost, containers, structures, fertilizers and pest control products that seem necessary, gardening is tougher and more expensive than I expected for plants that may not even bear fruit.

I’m in Mesa Az and just have garden peas a couple weeks old and I’m about to plant dwarf peas. Crossing my fingers. They’re one of my favorite food but I have truly sucked at growing! So I’m hoping the fall will be kinder and they actually make more than a couple pods! I had something kill the fist ones and I think powder mildew. All yellowed and died as they were finally making flowers and had a couple pods. When I was younger we lived in Virginia for awhile and my dad grew peas and I’d take a paper bag of them for lunch.

Thanks, getting ready to try again, and this should help a lot. Something ate all our shoots a few years ago--we suspect pigeons or doves--so we put netting over them, and that seemed to work, but we didn't have a handy system for removing and replacing it for weeding. I guess once they get up high enough, you don't have to worry about weeding?

I grown snow peas for many years and it's the end of the season here in Los Angeles. My best production is via aquaponics. They out produce the dirt by a wide margin. My 3 pea plants in aquaponics can produce as much as 20 plants in soil. I never weigh them, but I bet it's easily over 5 lbs with just 3 plants.

I'm in the PNW, 100 miles north of Seattle. Powdery mildew definitely hits the peas around early-mid summer, aphids as well maybe a bit sooner. I typically start spraying with neem oil before that...problem solved unless we get torrential rains, lol.

Peas are the perfect crop, I planted a lot, all 3 kinds and some just for shoots too. Also good just to cover some bare ground until summer crops go in because you can never have too many. They're a veg that freezes well if you really can't eat them all.
