Something else that can help too especially with narrative film making is just recording background noise of a location. That can really help in the editing phase. I know you said this is more for non-narrative stuff but these are all really good tips for anyone in film just starting off.

As someone who is still relatively inexperienced, I try to make - and memorise - checklists to go through on set, precisely because I know there'll be something I'll forget, but in the end I think it just comes down to experience, and doing it enough times that it becomes second nature. The problem is that the smaller the budget, the smaller the crew, so often you have to think about - and take care of - *everything*.

I feel like I've been doing a pretty good job with most of these. Still run into some issues with lighting consistency. The last shoot I did was interviewing about 12 different people + B-Roll...a full 10-hour day. Unfortunately, there was only one location within the building that we could use for the interviews. I shot AM on one side of the room and PM on the other side, just to keep things interesting and also because of the sun. The kicker was that there was a lake on one side of the building, and when the afternoon sun hit that lake it all reflected right back in and completely changed the dynamics of our ambient lighting for the PM shoots. As the sun angle changed (even within a space of 30 minutes), the quality, intensity, and color of the light coming off the lake varied dramatically. There were huge floor-to-ceiling windows in the room and I just didn't have enough modifiers at my disposal to make much of a difference. As a result, my morning interviews (with the lake lightly shimmering out of focus over the subjects' shoulders) were beautiful, and my afternoon interviews turned out pretty blah. Another thing I ran into on that shoot is something I'd love for you to do a video on: lighting and shooting redhead subjects (or people with extremely fair skin in general). I had never done it before this shoot and quickly found out that it is very challenging if you don't know exactly what needs to be done. It was super hard to color correct in post, as well.

Agreed. I made the mistake of getting paid to do a job long before we were to sit down to do pre production. Months came, and then all of a sudden they were pushing for limited time to just get and start shooting. I had a plan for that and was not too worried, but when I arrived on location, they changed all the conditions. I did not get what I was told I was getting. So now I'm sitting their trying to improve something together, while trying to manage expectations... Professionals like to work with Professionals. Low budget productions is the hardest. Don't work for that!

To expand on #2 Glasses make a difference also, sometimes your lighting may look great but can have weird shadows or a glare on someone with glasses, so I'll have my stand in have glasses if possible (if needed) I shot a high up female executive once that walked in for her interview after we spent an hour setting everything up and when she sat down she promptly rotated her chair to the other direction and said "this is my good side. Only film my good side." And we had no choitbut to quickly make that work...now I ask if they have a preferred side to be filmed Also, as someone who works a lot with the disability community, I check to see if any of the subjects have a wheelchair because you need to accommodate for them having enough room to move into position around your setup

Great video. I got too stressed out being thrown into terrible locations so control things as much as possible by interviewing in my own studio and niching down to professions where the background can be neutral e.g. business coaches rather than chefs. Context can be created with b-roll clips and images. Had to laugh when you said avoid periods when natural light changes suddenly as that would mean leaving the UK!

I’ve only found like 2 videos about it unfortunately. Main thing is to keep the background different from skin. If they have light skin keep the background darker. I’d they have dark skin keep the background lighter.
