Shot TV news for over 30 years until I got tired of working nights, weekends and holidays. The thing I always had in my head was "wide shot, medium shot, tight shot, action-reaction shots, cut-aways." And whenever possible I would try to have my subject walk in and out of frame for cutting to and from interviews if I wanted to save my cut-aways.

None of this is some crazy secret information but it takes one from "just randomly doing stuff, hoping for the best" to "actually having a plan" ... and that's the best point to be at.
