Epidemic of Child Marriage in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriage of girls under the age of 15 in the world, with 29 percent of girls in Bangladesh married before age 15, according to a UNICEF study. Two percent of girls in Bangladesh are married before age 11. Successive inaction by the central government and complicity by local officials allows child marriage, including of very young girls, to continue unchecked, while Bangladesh’s high vulnerability to natural disasters puts more girls at risk as their families are pushed into the poverty that helps drive decisions to have girls married.

It is easy to say "Don't have children if you cannot afford them." When you're 11 and married, I don't think you have a choice not to have sex with your husband who may be much older. To have or not to have children there is not a matter of choice but a matter of time.

Totally agree this there they have no choice bless them and they are just children it does my head in , in America where they use it and are protesting all they have to do is keep their legs shut or use something condoms you have to protect yourself against disease also it’s called responsibility imagine they lived here they’d realise how lucky they were now rape on the other hand is more understandable but I don’t agree abortion late at all up to 6 weeks if the woman has severely been effected obviously they all have but that’s also my story I learned to treat the child as a gift from god and is an adult now obviously you worry about your going to feel when you first see them I know all them emotions and it’s extremely hard but the love is no different that’s my child and wouldn’t change a thing ever I don’t understand how they can see a new born baby and still want it killed they actually sell them to tortured and for their blood adrenachrome and organs they make a fortune behind the scenes it’s disgusting as soon as you feel your child move inside you there’s instant love I had to overcome anxiety and depression but it’s not the child’s fault at all they also sell them to couples who can’t have children which is probably the best outcome from the rest at least they want and they’ll love the child it’s a money maker for them so for them that think happily they’re child is dead don’t be so sure or what they’ve been through before death these women can see a new born baby taken to be killed should be locked up 😣

The part about this documentary I disliked , is it's focus on Child brides... the reality is the grooms and brides are both children. The boys lives are equally affected. They are forced to quit their educations as well, and inherit financial responsibilities of providing for their families plus one and more because the children are pressured to have children within the first year or two of their marriage.

Ok the one girl who said her brothers gave money to someone to change her age to 18. Didn't they just say earlier that the reason they married her off was because her parents didn't have a lot of money. So they don't have the money for her to go to feed her but they have enough money to pay someone to change her age on a certificate so she can be married off? Wouldn't that be more expensive honestly? What sense does that make?

@@walkingwanderers9136 Education isn't that costly here in Bangladesh but competition is hard as hell. In nationally arranged exams for 5th,8th,10th and 12th we need to score at least 80-96% on average. Then comes Uni admission where we get 1 or 2 attempts to sit for entrance exam for some 1000-3000 seats at different Unis against some 60k-250k selected top students. And there's no on campus placement and the most desired jobs are govt jobs specially the Bangladesh Civil Service and among the Uni Graduates,only 0.01-0.02% can crack here. This is why,girls of middle class families with poor grade are married off and in case of extreme poverty,girls work as maid or garments workers. And Boys with poor grade start working in various sectors based on their family background.

To everyone in this comment who thinks this is "fake" let me tell u that i am a citizen of bangladesh and it is 100% true child marriage exists in bangladesh, not only in this country but pakistan and india as well. This mostly happens in the lower class families who cannot afford to educate their children. At one time these low tier people used to make their daughter marry a boy who has minimum income because they couldnt afford to take care of them and used to make their sons study. Now what happened is these low tier family have gotten into such dangerous habits that when they're daughter and sons reach at the age of 10-15 they make the girl marry a much more older person for example 10 years even 23 years older than their daughter just cuz they have money, and they make the boys forcefully get into small works for example factory cleaning or other type of really small income jobs that hardly pay them 10 dollars a month but still they greed for that ten dollars and their daughter's husband's money.

They have no idea of what marriage life is, this is so sad and ignorant...Even if they're poor that doesn't mean for their parents to just give them away. How about the life of this innocent children?? The sad part of it is when they have intercourse while the child is only 8...It breaks my heart what these little girls had to go through. People needs to be educated in order for them to be able understand life. This has to stop in Bangladesh. The parents of these little girls need to be put away for good.

Ray R As if you've lived in Bangladesh and have witnessed this first-hand. Even if it is true, the matter of the argument wasn't of that in the first place. The guy above is acting like its the choice of these poor people to live in this state. It's not. Although, the child marriage epidemic in Bangladesh mostly IS a result of poverty. You wouldn't see people of good income marrying off their daughters in BD. The country is way ahead in development of women's rights and social milestones, outnumbering a multiple amount of nations as stated by the UN. Currently, there are more girls enrolled in primary and secondary schools than boys. However, child marriage is still more of an issue in Bangladesh, due to the extra problems it faces of climate change and extreme poverty. It's not at all embedded in culture to disregard females as human beings, as you believe. Educated, well-off families in other Asian/Middle-Eastern countries marry off their children early, and THAT is a result of culture. However, the patterns witnessed in Bangladesh for child marriage is directly proportional to the family's living conditions and education. I've had first-hand experiences there to know this, and you are wrong to try and paint a whole people and such a complex issue with a single brush.
@RayRand
@RayRand 9 жыл бұрын
iMusikkForeva There are extremely poor people living in the US too .. it's almost unheard of for people in this country to sell their children. Look .. I agree that only desperate people do this .. and I believe that humans are humans no matter where they live. HOWEVER .. I don't believe the same about cultures .. some CULTURES still have some very backwards ideas. Poor Bangladeshi families would not be selling their children if it was not something that was AVAILABLE to them in their culture/living environment. This is related to Universal Human Rights and this practice .. life female genital mutilation and honor killings ... should be stamped out by the human community at large. Or the human species will NEVER make any progress. Wrong is wrong .. PERIOD.
@iMusikkForeva
@iMusikkForeva 9 жыл бұрын
Ray R I understand your overall point, and agree with the bigger idea, for sure. But some of the details within your argument, I don't agree upon. You must be aware that the type of poverty in America is immeasurable to the type of poverty in Bangladesh...so it is a rather unjust comparison. Although I have nothing to add to your paragraph above regarding the abolishing of such societal norms, because I acknowledge that culture plays a big role in these phenomenons....but I also believe that culture alone is not a factor in depicting the reality of this situation. A lot of families marry off their children against their full will, due to circumstances and this is a fact. You cannot erase 'culture' in a day. Culture is formed due to circumstances. So until we can ensure safe living conditions and fixed income for these people, parents won't be less eager to marrying off their daughters. After all, most do it to lessen their burden of food and shelter, and because they think that their children will be better off married. When families are financially stable, why worry about marrying their daughter off so early and give the endless dowries to the groom's family if the girl is no longer a liability? Soon, the cultural aspects of child marriage will no longer be valid, as daughters are no longer a trouble to the household. When many people stop this act, through active campaigning for the benefits of female education and the negative effects of early marriage, others will surely follow. This is why education and poverty reduction is the key to success, as you can't eliminate culture without giving people a reason to.

That’s how selective gender abortion is so common in India. It’s illegal but even wealthy families perform it on a massive scale. Girls to boys ratio in Bangladesh is 850:1000 which further results in elevated rates of rape due to unavailability of girls. The only way to reduce all these massive social problems is through literacy. We need teams of social educators to upend centuries old practises. This could only be solved through active efforts.

I understand that 'early sex' is not a problem, 'early marriage' is. Yet throughout European history until the 1940s, girls were married off at an average of age 9. Then Europe thought it was 'civilized' enough to delay the marriage age for women. Then its population began a progressive decline. Beyond redemption. Marriage is so discouraged in white countries that girls just date playboys until they exhaust their youth, then end up unmarried. Now Europe will be populated by people from countries that practice early marriage which UNICEF calls 'child marriage'. White populations will eventually go extinct. Meanwhile, marriage age has already been set naturally, it's puberty. Between 8 and 12 depending on race and genes. It has been argued that God's idea of marriage age is Mary's age at the time she gave birth to Jesus. She was 12 years and 6 months. In fact she married a much older Joseph, who was in his 70s or 90s (though Joseph was not the child's father) Marriage age can never be universal. Those that set it high, have zero consideration for the woman. On the average a woman has only 32 years of reproductive age (11-43) while a man has from puberty to death -- which could span over a hundred years. And a woman has only 14 years of Sexual Market Value (SMC) from puberty to age 25 after which men overlook her and opt for younger girls. Age of Consent can NEVER be universal. Customs or religious beliefs determine it in every society. 16th Century English poet, Richard Herrick advised girls thus: Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, The higher he's a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, The nearer he's to setting. The age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse, the worst, Times still succeed the former Then be not coy, but use your time, And while ye may, go marry; For having lost but once your prime, You may forever tarry. (It's up to girls to heed this wise counsel or listen to UNICEF which doesn't care about the indoctrination of children by trans groups in Euramerica)

so that's why you support pedophilia, girls should be married off at 16 or 18 according to her mental and physical growth, this is government's duty to make th reduction of their proverty and stabilize their living condition, control population growth and and estabihed a secured society for women by teachhing men morality, equality/equity and young girls about problems of having sex before 18 and marriage and pregnancy, western countries have population crisis bc of their marriage court system and patriarchal misogyny based minset in western men still existed and woke feminism and internet and over pricing and huge living cost and extreme overworking like a slave, but poor asian countries have overpopulation crisis along with lazy and corrupt people and huge poverty

this is so wrong smh. Because in their eyes this means money but do they even think about how long it'll run before it runs dry? or what if the man beats the daughter so bad to her death that, is when they wanna scream and howl and cry. No, you chose the easy way to get money which, is inturn seeing the death of your daughter earlier than your own. if you aren't stable enough to have children and maintain their well being hold off. And move to somewhere else where erosion isn't so prevalent. If the men are the "favorites" make sure they go to college so their future children(primarily girls) can have a excellent future and maybe this wouldn't happen so much. And to the people in government considering lowering the legal consent age of marriage to 16 is stupid. Focus more on stopping child marriage. Especially knowing right now the age of consent doesn't bother them because, they are bribing people to change the legal documents.

This is a shame and there is no end in sight as they won't enforce their own laws. The laws are just there so they can say they are trying, which obviously they are not. If they would use the government to enforce them in many ways like most countries do such as actual birth certificates as filed by the government not written down by a parent perhaps easily to change. Make it where an official government official must register the birth, and keep the original on file elsewhere permanently. Then there is no question of age when it comes up ( as if those girls looked anywhere near to 18 ! ) Penalize those that go against the rules the parents namely, the husband any in the family that are involved in the wedding. Schools that act like they graduated or something instead of her life ending by marriage. The men that marry them should be held on charges of the false marriage, the dowry, selling of a human, rape and many other items. Schools should require that girls and boys have the same minimum education, up to near adult 16 or 18. If they leave school, it should be checked on and reported if they were married or otherwise ( and followed up on ) Education is the main way out of this but not if the girls can't be there to have it , and the boys live in a culture that deems women as mere objects to be bought and sold, with zero rights to their own lives. One of these she agreed to marriage as being forced anyway, if she can continue her education. Followed back up a week later or so her husband smiling ear to ear as she says no he won't allow me to attend school. Another one her mom was complaining they could have made money, but are now losing it by paying to further educate a female. The total disgust if it was in this one or another I seen before this that many girls there literally split in half due to pregnancy at too young of an age especially by giving birth as the child would be full sized , makes me want to vomit ! The one girl had it happen 9 years previous and just had surgery to correct it but was saddened that her husband had left her and remarried and now she had no where to fit in her community. This is the mid set of girls taught all their lives their greatest glory can be to die giving birth, how they see the world. As no better than cattle bought and sold and used as wished until not wanted any longer. I can relate to those that commit suicide rather than marry. Men that stand there and say at least they are married like that is a huge honor, or the only honor in life. No choices, girls dragged to weddings; crying, heads down, hurt, sad, no future,feeling hopeless and useless sad and terrible. And to think we have people in this country that whine and complain daily over things not half as bad as what these girls endure, and that doesn't even occur to them , as well as how fortunate they really are !
