Epigenetic Aging: How old is your DNA?

Dr. Steve Horvath, a professor of genetics and biostatistics at UCLA, has found a way to measure biological aging - a type of "clock" - based on the methylation pattern of an organism's genome. Methylations are biochemical processes that modify the activity of a DNA segment without changing its sequence - a type of epigenetic change. This video primer explains the basics of epigenetic clocks, the topic of our interview with Dr. Steve Horvath, coming soon!

Hi there, I am interested in genetics. It's really difficult. Where, Scientific work is surely going to drastically age people. Even in finding out about D.N.A. it kind of wastes, so much time. It's very difficult, to communicate about these issues with the general public. I can see people learning about this type of information but by observing their actions. I am really not seeing them understanding this issue.

I taught courses in biological, marine and environmental sciences at the college level ... before I retired (20 years ago) I developed a course: The Biology of Obesity, Ageing and Disease and have followed the research in these areas ever since. In my estimation Drs. Rhonda Patrick and Valter Longo are absolute leaders in the field in presenting emerging scientific research in terms understandable by anyone.

Dear Ken over 96% human lifestyle decisions are based on emotions or what makes them feel good or avoid feeling lousy. Information is the LAST thing that impacts human lifestyle choice. So, presenting information to humans is largely wasted effort. Hounds of brilliant scholars like Dr. Patrick and Dr. James Hansen of NASA have gone hoarse trying to make public listen to science but all human chase after is short term dopamine highs not long-term outcomes. People refuse to tolerate the discomfort of a face mask while risking long term disability from COVID19. In short humans are scientifically stupid or decision ally dumb. Despite all the research and lecturing on longevity and turning back the clock the lifespan has shrunk in the US for the past 3 years in a row and that is about to speed up with COVID19. The best use humans would derive out of the research on epigenetics is to speed up the aging clock by drinking more etc. The sales of alcohol have gone up about 20% in the pandemic as there has been a drop in the physical activity by a similar volume. My anti-aging research work tells me that aging would remain incurable because humans are effectively a stupid species an stupidity is incurable. I have offered thousands to comply with my sleep and stress combatting strategies thus far zero takers. Humans dont really want to live longer unless they can get it in a pill like MNM.

Apart from methylation of histone proteins, 8 of which form the basis of chromosone packaging when the double helix of DNA wraps around themj, histone modification also takes place at different locations on different amino acids in the form of phosphorylation, acetylation, ubiquitylation and sumoylation. By no means is methylation the only game in town.

The sauna MAY be changing your epigenome on its own, but if I'm not mistaken, if you were to jump in a cold shower directly afterwards, it triggers the same dna refreshingmechanisms as pure wasabi, calorie restriction, and to a lesser extent, the 5-day fasting mimicking diet, correct? Cold conditioning is a great alterative to sauna and triggers the same heat shock proteins. Bathe for 3-5 minutes twice daily in ice cold water at 5-6°C. Start with 30 secs and may use 9°C water and gradually build it up from there. I can now go for 5 minutes at 5°C water twice daily on most days. Sure, wakes you up. Sauna can be mixed with the cold therapy. Some people can do 10 minutes of cold exposure but benefits beyond 4 minutes are not great. Dr. Sinclair calls it cryotherapy that is used to burn warts no for cold conditioning. I grew up in a very cold part of India and my system can take extreme cold well. Older adults exposed to cold while shovelling snow have had heart attacks so it is a risky thing.

The work Dr. Horvath is talking about is still ultimately an investigational tool in his lab. But, there's been some attempts at commercialization for the *chronological* part. Check out myDnaAge.com (no affiliation).

Hey, Rhonda! Can you PLEASE have a friendly debate with Paul Saladino about the dangers of sulforaphane? He is a really nice and respectful guy. Please consider!
