Credits-soompi Tablo had described the song as, “A song about the moment after a first breakup or painful incident when you understand why people say alcohol tastes sweet.” The lyrics talk about craving alcohol because of insomnia, while at the same time not being able to sleep because of the influence of alcohol. The music video was directed by director Park Bae Jong of the successful film “Welcome to Dongmakgol” and stars IU and Jin Seo Yeon. The video beautifully captures the two actors as a martial arts master and pupil. So here's my theory for the MV. IU and Jin Seo Yeon are mother and daughter, and also master and pupil. For some reason, probably due to some past trauma, the mother wants to keep her daughter safe from the outside world, thus keeps the daughter at home and doesn't let her go unless she can prove that she's strong enough to survive out there, by winning in a martial match. It seems that the daughter always wants to and tries to escape (the part from 1:13), but keeps failing. She sees herself as the bird locked in that cage, helpless and not being able to get out and spread her wings. The mother, after seeing the daughter getting more and more depressed, decided to "let the bird fly away" (3:23) and let her daughter win (3:30). The daughter always wanted to win so that she could escape, but the moment she wins, her mother fades away, which she has never anticipated. So she then blames herself for it and drowns herself in sorrow and alcohol. This basically reflects Tablo's relationship with his dad. They were constantly fighting, his dad didn't want him to go on his own path of being an artist, Tablo kept pushing for his dream. After his father passed away, partly of the stress caused by Tablo's scandal, Tablo kept blaming himself, and the pathway he chose, for his father's death (as also reflected in the song "Lost One"). Watching this again today and found another perspective to lovedrunk’s lyrics and mv. Feels as though Jin Seo Yeon is IU when she got older, and as she drinks, her past, possibly sad memories (IU) creeps back to haunt her. So she fights it, but to no avail. She cannot destroy her past because it is what made her. And realising it, that’s why in the end JSY chooses to give in and let go. Accept your past even if it is painful & move on. my interpretation of the mv: i think all the fight scenes are a symbol for when couples fight. They fight during the most random times, and instead of showing their true feelings (like in the music video when they both kept crying when they were alone but put up a tough front when together). At some point one of them is tired of all the fighting and decides to let go of the fighting and the relationship. EDIT: the mv can be open to any type of interpretation! the relationship and fighting doesn't only happen between couples so it can be any type of (platonic) relationship. I only chose to interpret it as lovers since tablo said that the song is about love and break-ups :)

I think your interpretation works well. Actually, my interpretation of the mv is that that was not a man, but a woman that IU was fighting, perhaps her mother. Her and her mother constantly fight, but her mother actually cares for her daughter and would never hurt her. Due to misdirected rage, IU ends up ending her mother, the one who taught her to fight, which is why she continues to fight alone in the end as she pretends to practice with her mother, feeling her presence in a sense and in a notion of respect. When she drinks to her mother's death in the end, she is heartbroken by her misunderstanding between the two but it was too late. IU's character continues to fight the way her mother taught her and fought with her even after her mother's death, and it sort of brings IU's character reminiscence and respect of her mother.

I recalled when Epik high entered YG some years back when 2NE1 and Big Bang around. I was ecstatic. Because epik high was the first few K-music I heard besides Nell and Park Bom. Then, they started releasing music with YG artists. I felt like it restricted a lot of their creativity but I couldn't quite tell till I listened back to their classic albums before YG. Now, seeing them releasing a non-YG album makes me really emotional. After all these crazy years with that company, finally, they have gotten their old style of music creativity. I'm sorry but I beg to disagree. If you're pertaining to their album 99, here's what EH said about 99 “we made this album for 99% of the people, not just 1%”. They literally and purposefully released an album that's 99% kpop instead of their old style and that was their decision. YG even wanted them to use a studio outside of the YG bldg just so they won't get influenced by YG style. That is why Shoebox shows more of the classic Epik High that we know of as well as their last album WDSW. Tablo's solo under YG ent also showed blo's unique style. The story can be related to how as we get older we can look back to our youngerselves. The things that happened in the past and can't seem to move on. *뮤비 해석입니다.(제 개인적인 생각임) 앞서 해석을 하나 먼저 올렸었는데 제가 놓친 중요한 장면이 있었더군요. 진서연이 새장을 '여는' 장면. 그게 새장을 여는 장면인지 몰랐습니다. 새장씬에서 진서연이 뭘 만지긴 하는 것 같은데 그게 뭔지 몰랐거든요..새장 문 걸쇠였나봄.. 여튼 앞선 해석에서는 아이유를 집착 악역으로 보고 진서연을 선이라 생각했었는데 알고보니 그 반대인듯 합니다. 오히려 진서연쪽이 집착을 했으면 했지.. 흠흠.. 고로 다시 다른 해석을 정리해봅니다. 아마 앞서 적은 해석보다 이쪽이 좀 더 정확하고 맞는 것 같아요. (물론 어디까지나 주관적인 제 생각입니다..) 뮤비가 녹여낸 큰 줄거리 = 연인이 이별하기까지의 갈등과정. 이별은 서로 같이 합의해야 깔끔한데 서로 의견이 갈린 상태. 한명은 헤어지고싶어하고 나머지 한명은 헤어지기싫어함. 뮤비 테마 = 연인간의 '갈등'을 무술전투씬으로 연출. 합. 티키타카. 쌍방향소통. 핑퐁. 아이유 = 권태기가 옴. 이별하고 싶어함. 진서연을 잊고싶어함. 진서연 = 아이유 엄청 사랑함. 헤어지고 싶어하지 않음. 집착과 사랑의 경계에서 혼란스러워보임. 술 = 도피처. 갈등을 피할 수 있는 수단. 슬픔 등 모든 네거티브한 것들에 대한 피난처. 1. 01:00 아이유가 몰래 진서연 엿보는 씬 = 아이유가 호시탐탐 헤어질 기회 엿보는 중. 탐색전. 그러나 이내 결국 진서연에게 들키고만다. 2. 01:24 진서연과 아이유의 1차 전투씬 = '너 왜 호시탐탐 헤어질 타이밍을 보는거지?' 진서연이 싸움거는 장면. 진서연은 절대로 아이유와 헤어질 마음이 전혀 없다. 일단 이 전투씬에서 진서연이 우위를 점한 것으로 보아 아이유의 시도가 실패했다는 것을 말해준다.
