The Mystery of the Moderne - The Phantom Electric
The original Moderne was intended to be the third guitar in a series of futuristic designs that included the Flying V and the Explorer that were intended to revive lagging sales. Though the Flying V and the Explorer were put into production in the late 50s in small quantities and eventually became classics, the Moderne was never officially released and only a handful of prototypes ever made it out of the Epiphone and Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. For decades, the mere existence of a true Moderne prototype has been a kind of "Holy Grail" for guitar collectors.

oday I managed to rescue one of those, they had it abandoned in an unused warehouse, perfectly cared for, clean and it is actually one of the 300 ;) and as a friend here comments, it actually has a lot of sustain.

I have a very well-constructed copy of this guitar (Chinese custom order) with a natural quilted maple top, ivoroid binding, 5 piece maple/walut neck with ebony fretboard with mother of pearl inlays, with (3) p90's. It DOESN'T say Gibson on the headstock. (Just a "G" in traditional Gibson script) Replaced all of the hardware (and pickups) with authentic Gibson parts. Looks like a million bucks and plays like a dream. "Patriot" haters save your breath - I'm on a budget and 2/3 of the guitars on the shelf are coming from China (see the damn good Squier Classic Vibe tele's) If Gibson's custom shop had made it for me, it would have cost $7,000 - $8000. (and been no better)

Glad you found one you like! I don’t shop on where it was manufactured, only how it feels and sounds! There are incredible guitars, and dogs, at every price point $50-$5000

Very cool, I always wanted one of these 20 years ago, still may get one some day. But just so you know, this guitar you were playing wasn't apart of the first run. I believe this was the second run, as the Epiphone Moderne was first released in the late 90s (98 I think). It wasn't the exact same build as the ones that would come later, but then again, the current design isn't the same as the one from the 2000s. Either way, cool to see. If you are into the Moderne models, check out the original that epiphone made, the mo-baby moderne, as well as the variations that Gibson used to make.

I snapped one of these up a few years ago and replaced the pickguard with a black three ply and it is such a sweet sounding guitar. Beautiful finish too. My only complaint is the tuning setup on the headstock, but the “gumby” shape is too cool to let me complain too much. It is a tad difficult to play sitting down, as it wants to slope forward given it’s shape.

Play and Trade Guitars - I actually have quite a few Epiphone solid body Gibson copies. I was gifted an Epi SG-400 and an Epi LP Standard early on so I figured I would hunt for other shapes. I managed to find both an Epi Korina Explorer as well as a Flying V, and while they are both nice, the Moderne is a legitimately good guitar, forget about the name on the headstock.

I wanna buy one so badly. Just a question, is it basically a Flying V but with the in slope so you can properly rest it on your legs unlike the Flying V or is it it's own feeling? Because if it's a Flying V with slope for the legs, I'm 100% sold
