They were US made and a lot better than Gibson guitars for build and quality originally. Until Gibson bought them out and demoted them. The Beatles were not wrong in the early 60's (Epiphone Casino) and neither was George Benson who (in)famously gave up his ES135 because it couldn't stay in tune and stand up to live playing. He was approached by the Japanese who felt they could do better... he has been with Ibanez for the last 55+ years. Remember that when you see everyone raving about a 50's vintage Gibson... they weren't all bad but they would most likely fall flat as a gigging instrument unless you have deep pockets and your own guitar tech. Modern Gibson's are better due to improved manufacturing such as fret levelling but the older designs require you to have some skills and knowledge to get the most out of them - like the nut work required to help them keep tune.

I'm a songwriter/guitarist and have always looked at guitars as being tools to achieve a specific end result. Personally, I've never really concerned myself about years, neck profiles, series, etc. If a guitar sounds good, plays well and is in my price range, I'm happy. When I see people geeking out on gear I've always equated it to chefs geeking out on their cutlery instead of the meals they create. Lol! I can understand and appreciate it though.
