Loved filming this video. I think the thing that most impressed me was side by side, for £500 it felt so close, through the same rig. The ones we had to play we out of the box, set up and the fret work was great. Maybe we were lucky based on some of the comments here. But the blindfold test really impressed me because then it really was hard to tell, from the sound. But playing them blindfolded, something about playing the Gibson was obvious, so I guess that says it all hahah. Ultimately I’m incredibly impressed with the new Epiphones for the money, I hope whoever gets one enjoys it!

By the way, people say veneer like its a dirty word. Wood veneers are just that, they are thinly sliced wood that allows you to get the most beautiful appearance without the cost of a thicker slab. The fact that the veneer is over a Maple cap means that it has all the tonal characteristics of a Gibson (if you believe in that sort of thing) but without the added cost of a flame Maple cap. Don't mistake this for "photo flame" which was a method of using photo recreations of flame Maple that were then glued onto the guitar body. Photo flame is NOT wood, veneer IS.
@PsychoMantis308
@PsychoMantis308 4 жыл бұрын
You can tell the difference by looking at it in different lighting. A veneer will "change" in different light while photo flame stays the same
@30smsuperstrat

The only thing that a veneer might do is cover up a multi piece maple cap. Fender does that with their sunburst budget guitars, as Epiphone has done with the SG where you can see 4 -or 5 panels on the edges but the top and back look solid. These 2 Earphones don't sound like they're having any sonic set backs if that's the case though. I still don't like the Epiphone name on a Les Paul though. Just brand it as an import Gibson Les Paul.

@@30smsuperstrat Les Paul worked at Epiphone and started his work there, so an argument can be made that the Epiphone version has the pedigree. I’ve got a 2019 Epiphone LP plus top pro, and basically it sounds and plays just as good as my friends 2010 Gibson LP. The Epi is a bit brighter, but if you play through pedals with a bit of meat it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference, and after set up, both actions are the same. These new Epi LPs are the bomb. I think I might have to get me a 50s version.

My $600 MIM Standard Strat with H/S/H and coil splitting can get any realistic tone I could possibly need. Plus, I don’t sob myself to sleep if it gets a little scrape or ding. I have a 2019 Epi plus top pro, it had high action, a nut that was too high and frets that needed a level and crown. Not a problem as I do guitar set up, but worth considering if you're thinking of buying one. Unfortunately looking at Trogly's youtube channel and all the comments from repair shops on there it doesn't seem an isolated problem. At this price point QC should not allow high frets and high nut action to pass. Its not rocket science - you pay someone in the factory to check frets with a fret rocker and check the action at the first fret for the nut ! If Harley Benton can do it at 1/4 the price then so can Epiphone/Gibson ! Anderton's as a large retailer please give them a kick up the arse to sort this out !

The new Epi series is a definite step up fron the older version. Even in Anderton's previous comparisons, I've NEVER heard Epiphone sound this good next to the Gibson. Especially the 50's model. I would personally save up and get the Gibby instead, but nothing wrong with scratching the les paul itch on a budget. I've just been around long enough to know that buying budget guitars is a huge sink hole of expenditure. At one point my place was filled with Mexican strats and les paul copies by different manufacturers that I bought through the years. One day I added up the tally and realized that with that money plus all I spent on modifications, I could have bought at least 3 high end Gibsons. But instead, I had a bunch of modded budget items, while still dreaming of owning the high end stuff one day. Well, life is too short for that. I then sold everything (Unfortunately at a loss, as is always the case with budget guitars), and got myself an American deluxe stratocaster and later a Gibson Les Paul standard. I'm now saving up again for either a Gibson SG '61, or the new 50s les paul standard. But boy, is it tempting to get one of these new Epis with the excuse that it's a back-up to my Gibson. Decisions, decisions.

I started to learn classical guitar as a small child and in 1993 as a fresh teenager i got a Squire strat. Had a German guitar teacher at school who couldn’t offer the patience a kid with ADHD needed so got frustrated and quit. During lockdown, as a 40 year old teenager i got myself a (very) used 1970 Zenta strat to see if I wanted to carry on my learnings 17 years later and i was hooked. Unlike as a child picking out my birthday present when I was all about Clapton I got myself a 60’s 2020 Epiphone and I can’t tell you how much extra drive it gave me. What a thing. I’ve never played a Gibson, to be honest i avoided even picking one up while I was in the shop deciding if 50’s or 60’s was for me. I’ll try and keep it that way as this thing feels completely proper, I’m not kidding i do not understand at all how it can be 4+ times the price of mine. Have it playing through a Marshall MG50 which cost me less than £200. How has the world changed this much that you can get sounds and feelings for £700? I’m pretty sure in 93 the Squire was about £300, even in the days before our Government’s screwed over the pound so much! Don’t know why anyone needs to read this, but there you go.

Honestly these guys are really talented at improvising. I just felt the need to comment that on this specific video even tho I’ve been watching you guys for a little while now. Your guys phrasing is just really good and you pick really awesome notes when you’re soloing and really go outside the pentatonic scale a lot and have a lot of nuance to your playing. You guys make these “every day mans“ guitars sound pretty damn sweet, and as someone who can’t always afford the higher end stuff I appreciate that a lot. These guys just do a good job of demoing guitars, flat out

On video they all look nice, but to my ears I could pick the Gibson ones out right away. More clarity overall and there is something about the Gibson's in the upper part of the midrange that the Epi's just don't give. For the price point, most will be happy with the Epi, but I'm still saving up for a Gibson Standard 50's goldtop.

Matt L still got that “break” angle...
@Sheltada
@Sheltada 4 жыл бұрын
@@JamieClark except the headstock angle isn't a solid piece of wood on epiphone like they are on gibsons. The headstock is a second piece of wood cut diagonally to fit on the neck, so it doesn't break nearly as much since the woodgrain follows the angle.
@JamieClark
@JamieClark 4 жыл бұрын
@@Sheltada Has this always been the case? Is the break angle on old Epi the same as traditional Gibson? (idk, I'm a fender guy myself...)
@Sheltada
@Sheltada 4 жыл бұрын
@@JamieClark the break angle is still there in the headstock, however gibson makes the whole neck (including the break angle) out of one piece of wood with no joint at the angle, instead machining the whole thing out of one block of wood. This decreases strength at the angle since the wood grain isn't lining up with the angle, but (supposedly) improves the sound somehow. Epiphone joins the headstock out of a separate piece of wood to the neck and glues the headstock to the neck. This means the wood grain of the headstock actually follows the break angle, and is nearly as strong as just having a solid piece of wood, but it apparently doesn't sound as good. I have an epiphone les paul special and in my own experience, the thing was on a stand that tipped over and slammed headstock first onto the ground. One of the tuners popped out and that needed to be fixed, but other than that it was fine. So basically, epiphones still have the break angle, but they are made in a way that doesn't sacrifice strength for some placebo sound benefit.

It's still a Chinese copy. It will NEVER be a Les Paul. You will always still want the real thing. Gibson knows this, Chappers said this himself. One of the things you really have to look into when buying an Epiphone when going to a guitar shop is always test every fret on every string I tested some that had dead fret pickup when strumming at 8- 12 frets I had to show them that they were surprised but thankful i show it to them at guitar centre not all of them do it but some do so be sure to test them out before buying have a great day everyone.

I don’t want to use the “Bright” word, so I will say that the Epis have more glass. And in a live situation that’s better. The 59 LPs I love because of the big neck but some of them get too wooly. With a set of good pickups and a great set up, I think the Epi will do the job well.

@@kianhowtan2429 Ergonomics in some cases. For my case with bigger palms and thicker construction strength non limber fingers it adds structure to palm for thumb over chords and more thumb pivot points on back of neck and also space to allow wider spread. Spread your fingers apart palm up and now start to bring your thumb in closer to the middle and you will notice as distance closes the spread lessens (typically).
