This has quickly become one of my favorite guitar “pron” channels. Honest opinions throughout. If you don’t like something you just flat out say so. Also no attempts to BS the audience if you aren’t sure of something. You just say “I don’t really know” and move on. Authenticity at its finest. Quite a breath of fresh air. Keep it up!

Like you I wasn’t a fan of the ES 335 (or so I thought) but the look of the raspberry tea figured Epi es335 (2022 model) looked just too good. I had it for some time and commented everywhere that while it was superbly made I couldn’t find the sound I liked. Then after a while I played with the setup. Adjusted the pick up height etc. And found the sweet spot. It’s phenomenal. One of my favs of around 25 guitars. And it really feels a quality guitar.

I am fortunate and/or stupid enough to own a number of Epiphones and Gibsons. I love a 335 style guitar and the Epis are just as much fun as the Gibsons, if not more enjoyable as they cost less. I recently picked up a new Epi Noel Gallagher Riviera and it's just fantastic. The artist endorsement helps remind me that I am playing an actual real worthy guitar and not a lesser budget brand, so much more bang for the buck than a Gibson. Love the videos, keep 'em coming.

Wow, a full hour of content. You're making my Fridays even better than before. I'm sure you're correct that the problem with that pot was a wiring issue, probably corrected when you moved the pickup wires, so if it starts acting up again you should be able to fix it just by remelting the connections. That's a beautiful guitar. I like my pre inspired by Gibson 335 very much, but I'm still kind of envious of that one. Nothing wrong with the SG and amp either. The brand also matters to me. It just makes a difference to me that my 335 comes from the Gibson company even if it doesn't say it on the headstock. Lastly, I believe Wilkinson makes all of Epiphone's vintage style tuners, so the only difference should be the name stamped on them. Thanks as always for the video.

Love that, glad you're making the long videos still. I had a postive experience with Guitar Guitar this week. My Grestch sem-hollow that I bought used from them in January developed a switch fault and had a dodgy master volume pot. Within a day of me dropping it into the Edinburgh shop they had replaced both (feels like with superior parts, CTS pot etc). Still under warranty so all free too.

Great job, love the longer content format! I watch every minute, of every one of your videos, usually twice! I'll also extend my viewing of your videos by watching them in pieces, over a period of two or three days, so more content is great for me. Do you typically use a lot of "Drive" from your Rat and Soul Food pedals? My main amp is a Marshall 800, so I use all my OD pedals as clean boosts only, with the "Drive" on 0, and "Level" to taste. So, there's no additional "Drive" from the pedal, just boosting the already overdriven signal from the amp. This is the best way to use OD pedals with a Marshall, imo, or any already overdriven amp really,.... which a Marshall 800 circuit certainly is. Looking forward to next week Colin!

I took a Brite scrubby pad for dish washing and lightly buffed the neck on mine which removed the sticky gloss and turned into a warm, satin feeling neck..huge upgrade in my view..took about 3 minutes to do it. The logo/name on the headstock does indeed carry weight. That's just how it is. I love Squier guitars especially the ones with the thinner bodies and slimmer necks. My favorite guitar is a Squier strat partscaster I knitted together using a Bullet loaded body, Classic Vibe neck, Fender vintage tuners and a Fender ultra string tree. The Squier is on a stand next to my Fender Standard strat. The Fender gets noticed right away whereas my favorite guitar the Squier that's made from 100 percent FMIC sourced parts is overlooked. Cheers!

Interesting turn of events! If it wasn't simply some dirt in the pot, then I wonder if perhaps a stray strand of the braided wire from the pickup was barely touching the pot at times causing a short? When you took out the pups and pulled on the pickup wires, you may have pulled it away from the pot far enough to prevent the short.

I REALLY ENJOY your presentation on everything you do. I find watching your videos are a great barometer to tell me how chilled out I am. You’re certainly not Steve Vai making me feel inadequate as a player are you! Lofl as friends do. You make me feel like a friend in his or my basement showing me a new guitar. By the end of your videos by watching your hands and listening I will hear everything the tone/volume pots do clean and dirty, if there’s an issue with the nut, bridge, tuners etc you’ll tell me. If you don’t go into detail about a particular piece I feel that I can safely assume that part is in proper working order and feels good. I prefer your opinion more than most actually. I happen to own a 33 piece Epi collection with some great Squires and other brands too but nothing bought because of the status presumption that comes with it and I have many friends that won’t pick up an Epiphone or a Squire because it’s an Epi or a Squire and it could possibly be the coolest guitar they’ve ever played, heck they don’t know. The next thing you know I get a call (I just got another yesterday) of a brand snob that has an important gig or session and they want to borrow my Epi or Squire. I have some very, very nice ones. I actually own this 335 in Rasberry Tea burst and it’s currently my favorite through my Hot Rod Deluxe and my Marshall JCM 2000 DSL40 with 5 good pedals bul no KLON or anything like that. I love what you do… keep it up and I’ll see you next week RickDaBassPlaya

Colin, if youve ever worked on motorcycles you might have encountered the cable lubing tool that clamps over the cable end and the other side adapts to the red straw that comes with spray cans of the various lubes (speedo, brakes, shifter, clutch cable grease and so forth.) There is in fact such a very similar doo-dad for pots to lube/clean them in situ. The one end slides over the the pot shaft and self seals against the threads, the other end accomodates the red straw from the DeOxit spray can. It forces cleaner down the gap between the pot bushing and the shaft. Granted it sounds more like that bridge volume pot is actually dodgy but you never know what a shot of contact cleaner might accomplish

Colin. The Epiphone pickups likely plug into the volume pots, either with three or four conductor quick connect plugs if push pull. That’s what the big access is for, to pass the connectors through. When I first saw in previous video I thought the plug isn’t seated fully into the socket on the pot. Just needs a push with a little screwdriver through F hole to seat it. Hope you sort it. Cheers.

Col I like the new format - it was interesting how you recommended a song and player and then you improvised on the lick. Very nice! I checked it out - great tune great player! Also a bit about pedals then amps and not just the guitars. Personally I am a big fan of your ‘story telling’ lead style and your stuff downstairs reminded me a lot of Robby Krieger another SG fan and a big time storytelling guitarist. As I say I like the evolution of the show and like other people an hour plus makes it more of an event and something to look forward to! Keep it up!!

I had a 2014 Gibson SGJ in fireburst. Great guitars that have actually appreciated quite a bit nowadays. I preferred mine because it didn't have the weird black covers on there and it had the 120th anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. I loved the way that neck felt, loved the 24 frets, and the finish which actually wore down fairly easily to show some serious mojo!

My new (Dec 2022) PRS Studio developed a weird grounding issue. Touch the bridge pup cover with your hand and it'd make crazy noise. I took the control cavity cover off. Gently moved a few wires around to look for any loose wires and the problem went away. Been fine for several weeks now.

In case you hadn't thought of it, it may be an idea to give the neck pickup pots and switch a quick squirt with contact cleaner.

Hi Colin,... you fixed it,.. it was you ... when you pulled that bridge pup out, that's what did it... those old school metal woven wires can be tricky cuz it's the 'ground' for the pup and if that metal woven wire ends up against something it shouldn't be touching it'll short out ... sooo you fixed it when you pulled the pup out and re-oriented the wire ... haha... well done you !!

Hi Col, so it turned out ok. I'm interested to know what the action is at the first fret , on the Sheriton 2 i had it was 0.030" so i removed the nut and filed it so it just had clearance over the first fret while holding down strings at the 3rd fret. Guitar sounds nice. Makes me wanna buy an Epi es 335.

I have an SGJ as well! Nice to see one getting some love, I don't see that much. Mine is the 2014 model with the "dreaded" 120th Gibson Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. I don't understand why ppl dislike it so much. I don't "fret" about it though lol. Love this channel! 👍🏻

Great guitar in spite of that 120th logo.... they had a funny spell in 2014 / 2015 but consider yourself lucky yours doesn't have robot tuners and a stupid childish scrawl Les Paul logo on it! 😆👍

@@theguitaristas love my 2015 traditional les Paul lol. I have many guitars and amps just like you do. It’s one of my fave les Paul’s. I took off the robot tuners and put Grover nickel locking tulip tuners to match the nickel finish. I love the titanium nut and bridge.

You know Colin watching you every week has inspired me to try my hand at a KZbin channel. I own approximately 35 guitars and seriously would like to review them for folks. Like you I’m not a youngster (68), just learning the in ‘s and out of filming and editing. I’ve got Gibson’s, Epi’s, Fenders Dan Electro’s etc. Not including my acoustic collection. Maybe you can give me some pointers over on the paid subscription channel. But as usual cheers mate for another great vid.

Great vid, thanks! You seem unlucky with the IBG Epi’s lately. I have 14 and only had problems with 2, the LP Classic and the SG Custom so not even the HB’s. And it’s always the toggle, pots and wiring.. still a good deal and no reason not to buy them 😂 🎸

You nailed it my friend. For a couple of years I was in a work travel status and although I could play my electric guitar I could not use an amp. When I changed jobs and got the chance to plug back in it was not at all kind to my ears, accuracy really suffered.

I have never owned a hollow body because I was afraid of the feedback. BUT...I am giving it serious consideration after hearing these videos. The harmonics just seem a bit deeper, nice and thick. This is a great video and I am so glad to spend an hour with you each week just talking shit about guitars, gear and life in general. Keep up the great work!!

Cheers man thanks fro the support! 😁👍 I think the semi hollow like this are less of a problem than perhaps the casino... but yes definitely something nice going on with the harmonics and worth embracing that!
