This is hands down the most common plant in the world, thanks to its beauty and also adaptability. I share the care tips for this plant, as well as the different growth pattern than it can exhibit (trailing, or climbing up). These guys can get massively huge fenestrated leaves in the right conditions. I propagate this plant and show updates at the end of the video, see if I managed to grow this into a monster sized leafed plant in the end.

Sean if you want something different, combine neon pothos cuttings with golden pothos in one pot. Their colors look great together and just gives a different look to the ubiquitous golden pothos.

They can live in water provided there’s enough nutrients for them. This is a very common plant people hang out of their aquariums because it helps absorb the nitrates from the water column. The ones i stuck into my tank last year are at least 14’ long and are mounted onto hooks on the wall. The roots also give a natural feel and look to the tank and its inhabitants. There’s a lot of house plants that can be grown as marginal plants in aquariums, but I’d say the pothos is hands down the most common house plant aquarists stick into their tanks.

Epipremnum aureum cannot genetically flower. It lack the ability to produce gibberellin and flower only when artificially exposed to this hormone. It relay only to vegetative propagation. This helped the build-up of several mutant lines of cells ont the same vine to the point that almost all wild specimens are basically the same variegated plant.

My next purchase soon. Variegated pothos cutting. I forget the name I've been looking at, but it's got really vibrant white and green mix. I have pothos all over in small pots. I just love how easy they are. Done the trailing vine, and climbing, so right now it's small plant pots. P. S. As a fellow dog parent, I relate. 🤣 That made me crack up so much. I have a few. My Doberman can't stand being away from me for even a minute. So mine is a 70 lbs baby throwing a fit sometimes in the background. Lol

Hello all, I were born in Viet Nam and growing up in USA. In Vietnamese, Trầu Ông and Trầu Bà (Trau Ong - Trau Ba) are a type of Pothos, but the problem is I don’t know which variety they are, google doesn’t help much. and I’m looking for Trau Ba, and according to my mom, Trau Ba has smaller leaves than Trau Ong. Thank you in advance and sorry for my English.

i found it really frustrating propping trailing epipremnum because the leaves will mostly twist upwards to get light and its impossible to fit them into soil that way. i am of the assumption you need to pay attention wich side of the cutting is the upper part. i also bought one plant one day and it wasnt growing at all for like half a year and then i checked it and the guy was basicly placing cuttings into the soil upside down

I had no idea golden pothos would eventually develop fenestrated leaves. Did I hear you correctly that they will only do this if growing upwards on a pole of some type?
@AndreeaWest
@AndreeaWest 2 жыл бұрын
Yes because the leaves need to be very big for it to get fenestration, and the only way to make it grow bigger leaves is by growing upwards on a pole or some kind of support

One thing I've started to think about to a maddening degree lately is how I'm going to manage my plants as they grow/mature get closer to my grow light. (sf1000, fixed height.) The part im stuck on is the maturity of the leaves. The way I understand it, the leaves start to get bigger and fenestrate as the plant climbs something and "matures" because of the increased light its able to access and as to not shade the lower leaves. If my monstera or pothos reach up too close to the light as they grow and mature, will they begin to revert and grow smaller/lose fenestration if i move the plant down or light up to give it more room? Right now my monstera/pothos/philidendron are about a foot maybe a foot and a half from the light and theyre maybe a foot tall at the largest, eventually theyre going to grow too close to the light and ill have to move them down a shelf returning their height to about a foot from the light. Will this decrease in intensity cause my plant to revert even though right now theyre growing more mature? I assume the intensity of light or ppfd is sort of the benchmark for my plant to know how mature it is, if so how do i mature my plants under a fixed light without growing then propagating them every 1&1/2 to 2 foot of growth? Or will it just keep on trucking after I move it back down from the light? id assume if the plant is happily growing at the height it is now, it should continue to grow when returned to that height I just dont know if it'll retain maturity when the intensity of light is decreased by moving the plant further away, the optimistic side of me hopes the plant only relies on the light to "tell" it how many leaves it can support and it listens more to how large it is/how many leaves it has/pot size/nutrients available and the fact its climbing something to determine its maturity since you said trailing vines will get smaller despite continuous lighting conditions That said im running my light about 1/5th as bright as it can go so if I have to raise the light rather than lower the plants it'll still have enough juice, ill just have to actually hang it from my roof rather than the ladder shelf the plants are sitting on which would give me better spread anyway, I just cant do it right now. Tl:dr: Do plant lose maturity if get too close to light then move down. Is keep light x distance above better plan, does it even matter at all as long as its climbing and getting enough light to support its growth? I'm basically wondering if maturity works the same as variegation, I might even have those wires a little crossed. The Ppfd is gonna increase as the plant grows then decrease (to a level it once sat at) when I move it cause the light is fixed so im wondering, since the change in ppfd relative to plant height in the their native habitat is negligible, as in theyre always getting a pretty similar intensity of light, how much of an impact will that have on my plants as they grow then need to be given more space?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
1) plants grow more fenestrated leaves when their aerial root grabs on to something successfully. Its not about the intensity of light. If you give them more light but the main stem is not climbing, it will produce juvenile leaves
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
2) if the plant is climbing and getting larger leaves, propagating the top cutting with 4-6 leaves and sticking them lower to the ground will help produce larger leaves closer to the ground. I recommend doing this.

What if you cut the top node. Will it split into 2 vines? Then maybe they will both wrap around the pole and give a more full look. I heard some people saying that there are different mutations within golden pothos and some are genetically destined to stay small/average, and others are capable of growing huge and developing finestrations. We never know which genetic line we got until we try to grow it huge. Your thoughts?
@onlyplants

As far as I know they all can get big. In fact all epipremnum species can enlarge and fenestrate when allowed to climb

I have a large pot growing up a wooden plank indoors. I agree that outdoors this would be problematic. To help even indoors, I actually drilled holes and mounted the wood pole onto rebar so it floats about half an inch over the soil. The plant is now so bushy you can’t see the gap and it has attached to the wood and doesn’t need Velcro any more.
