One really beneficial thing that scares many growers is root pruning. Every time I repot a plant, I examine the roots system, and if needed, I prune the roots, especially if it's potbound. Just like pruning the branches, pruning the roots makes them branch and makes them more efficient in absorbing nutrients from the soil.

I love your boldness; it's inspiring! I had a plumeria planted outside in the ground that suffered frost damage. I broke off the top part that had turned black, leaving just a broken looking stick in the ground D:. I meant to pull it out, but thought "hey let's just see what happens,", in kind of a "what would Sheffield do" moment. I didn't even water it, just relying on overspray from my other plant watering. Low and behold, what did I find this morning? 4 new sprouting leaf pairs! I was flabbergasted! Plants do indeed want to grow :D

I bought a tradescentia zebrina in the spring of 2023 and over the next few months almost killed it (too little light, pot too big, too much water). I managed to save a few cuttings and propagated them. Now, in the summer of 24, the pot of survivors is thriving and every 10 days or so i cut the longest stems off and put them straight back into the soil. The plant gets bushier every day.

@@SheffieldMadePlants Well after the visit with Mommy, some of her plants are growing like crazy. Others(Prayers and Begonia) are really mad at the top watering and over watering. They are starting to die. Four deaths coming out of over 20 plants won't be bad. I explained to her AGAIN about watering but she told me that is how she has done it for over 50 years so leave her alone. OK then. Her two blooms on the peace lily are still coming along beautifully. The 2 blooms on the prayer died and half the plant dried out in one week. This is the one I hung up like she wanted. Well she could not reach to water it and heat rises and it is hot in that room. Down came the planter and I cleaned that up. The saga continues...............................

I use a product called mosquito bits. They manufacture mosquito dunks also, which I use outside. Once a month I use the recommended amount in my watering can. They can be used around people, pets, plants, fish and livestock. Since trips hatch in your plants soil, it should kill the larvae. These also kill fungus gnats in the soil. I mix mine in a jar, with the recommended amount in a nylon stocking, its easier than straining. Hope this helps. Sheffield is my go to for my plants !❤❤

"What do I do when my plant is misbehaving?" You prune it. Send a message to her and her neighbors that you're not afraid to cut a b*tch! 😂😂😂 No, but seriously... What if my plant doesn't have any new growth on the bottom? Let's say, a ficus tineke, or a philodendron silver sword... can we prune it lower (leaving only stem) so new growth can come back? I've done it with my bougainvilleas and had amazing results, but I'm not sure it'll work with these, and I need to make sure before I finally behead them.

In growing trees (bonsai) for a thick stem/trunk, the worst thing you can do is prune them. Rather, you want to let them grow natural and unrestrained so that the trunk thickens to support the long growth, and you only start pruning once you've reached the desired thickness - this is the idea behind not just trunk growth but also sacrifice branches. Is this different for most houseplants, and if so, why would that be?
