One really beneficial thing that scares many growers is root pruning. Every time I repot a plant, I examine the roots system, and if needed, I prune the roots, especially if it's potbound. Just like pruning the branches, pruning the roots makes them branch and makes them more efficient in absorbing nutrients from the soil.

I love your boldness; it's inspiring! I had a plumeria planted outside in the ground that suffered frost damage. I broke off the top part that had turned black, leaving just a broken looking stick in the ground D:. I meant to pull it out, but thought "hey let's just see what happens,", in kind of a "what would Sheffield do" moment. I didn't even water it, just relying on overspray from my other plant watering. Low and behold, what did I find this morning? 4 new sprouting leaf pairs! I was flabbergasted! Plants do indeed want to grow :D

I bought a tradescentia zebrina in the spring of 2023 and over the next few months almost killed it (too little light, pot too big, too much water). I managed to save a few cuttings and propagated them. Now, in the summer of 24, the pot of survivors is thriving and every 10 days or so i cut the longest stems off and put them straight back into the soil. The plant gets bushier every day.

100 % Listen to Rich! I cut off my new baby jade and I'm glad I did it. It died but I got two new plants coming from it and three leaves that are making their propagation in earth. I love this man's advice. Next I want to cut off my ficus tineke. It's been here over a month and it just sits there with no growing or nothing. For Rich. It's 5:30am here and I will be going to Mom's about 9am. She told me yesterday she transplanted five more of her plants. I was just there. How do they grow so fast. Plus she is back to using her outside garden earth to pot them. Jeez. Is you Mom still around for fun times like these? I will let you know more later regarding what she is up too. Love and Peace.

@@SheffieldMadePlants Well after the visit with Mommy, some of her plants are growing like crazy. Others(Prayers and Begonia) are really mad at the top watering and over watering. They are starting to die. Four deaths coming out of over 20 plants won't be bad. I explained to her AGAIN about watering but she told me that is how she has done it for over 50 years so leave her alone. OK then. Her two blooms on the peace lily are still coming along beautifully. The 2 blooms on the prayer died and half the plant dried out in one week. This is the one I hung up like she wanted. Well she could not reach to water it and heat rises and it is hot in that room. Down came the planter and I cleaned that up. The saga continues...............................

While watching your videos, a question popped out in my mind. You have bunch of plants growing on trellises and moss filled poles. I use a product called mosquito bits. They manufacture mosquito dunks also, which I use outside. Once a month I use the recommended amount in my watering can. They can be used around people, pets, plants, fish and livestock. Since trips hatch in your plants soil, it should kill the larvae. These also kill fungus gnats in the soil. I mix mine in a jar, with the recommended amount in a nylon stocking, its easier than straining. Hope this helps. Sheffield is my go to for my plants !❤❤

"What do I do when my plant is misbehaving?" You prune it. Send a message to her and her neighbors that you're not afraid to cut a b*tch! 😂😂😂 No, but seriously... What if my plant doesn't have any new growth on the bottom? Let's say, a ficus tineke, or a philodendron silver sword... can we prune it lower (leaving only stem) so new growth can come back? I've done it with my bougainvilleas and had amazing results, but I'm not sure it'll work with these, and I need to make sure before I finally behead them.

In growing trees (bonsai) for a thick stem/trunk, the worst thing you can do is prune them. Rather, you want to let them grow natural and unrestrained so that the trunk thickens to support the long growth, and you only start pruning once you've reached the desired thickness - this is the idea behind not just trunk growth but also sacrifice branches. Is this different for most houseplants, and if so, why would that be?

How clean the 'clean prunners' should be? I see people talking about bleach... Seems like an overthrow. Will some dish soap and hot water be enough?

Is it reccomended to water plants after repotting or does this really depend on for example what plant it is, if the soil is already (lightly) moist or when the roots have been partially cut/ loosend due to being rootbound ?

All plants can be watered immediately except for succulents. Those should be left dry for a couple days before watering.

HELP!!! new to indoor plants and thought my scindapsus silver satin would be ok out on our verandah. It is winter here in Tasmania though. Anyway Sunday night was minus 4 degrees and my beautiful plant with it's sold thick leaves looks like its been run over by a truck. Leaves are saggy and curled and I think my stupidity has killed it. I have taken it back inside hoping that it will warm up and the potting mix will dry out a bit but I have no idea what I;m doing. Please help me.

Maybe cut it back, propagate the stems and see if it recovers with lots of light and warmth
