This channel is such an amazing resource!! Just coming back from a tangent that landed me in Falguni Sheth's work on racism and racialization as a technology used by power structures to various ends. But Rousseau came up several times in a q&a after a lecture of hers I was just listening to, and it reminded me I really need to fill out my ideas about liberalism. Still really hung up on Schmitt's critique and what it might be able to tell me about the trajectory we're on. (Don't worry, I'm philosophically allergic to the word "never" but there're a LOT of very serious moral barriers between me and the path of action he decided on after his insights - you haven't helped create anything terrible here!)

22:00 Yeah! Why would others' values necessarily fit right for you? Its THEIRS, not yours (ps. i am not seeking validation with this comment, i am declaring as what seems true to me :)

I've had the same thought about land ownership. Does all the earth and rock below also belong to the owner? How deep does that go? All the way to the earth core?

One mainstream concept of property states that something unowned becomes owned when someone claims ownership on it with any amount of labour. So, untill someone starts utilization of the earth core it belobgs to noone.

I like the podcast, I want to throw in my hot sports opinion. I think Rousseau believed humans are naturally good.....I think they are naturally good and evil and all have the capability of taking advantage of their neighbors. Good behavior only lasts so long, humans get bored with it. Thanks for putting on the show.

The island analogy really made me think of Marxism. Communists would surely say that even though the buff guy would be the best at deterring murder on the island, the weakest person - who can contribute the least to the island - should be paid in just as many coconuts.
