Being a wooden boat owner as well I connect with all the tricks needed when the work gets tedious. My boat is 36' (old salmon commercial boat) and when it came to recaulking and filling (I too use Sikaflex), I bought a caulking gun I could hook up to air compressor. What a time saver and wrist saver!! Not to mention getting the work done twice as fast. Only about $25 Canadian. Great vid. Cheers.

I think that the fabric you took up from the bow planking was probably the original covering. At the time that boat was made a standard process for waterproofing decks and cabin roofs was to first apply a very generous coat of white lead paint. Whilst the paint was still wet a sheet of canvas was laid over it and rolled and pressed down to try and get the wet paint to soak through it as much as possible. After that a second generous coat of white lead was painted over it and this was then allowed to dry. The canvas [ probably a very stout sailcloth ] was first wetted through so that as it dried out it would shrink slightly and give a taut smooth surface before applying the second coat of white lead. The canvas was lapped over the edge of the bow planking and secured with a strake along the edge of the planking and overlapping onto the hull. When all was dry you've effectively covered that planking with linoleum and it would be ready to receive its finishing coat of deck paint. I know!! where in heck are you going to get genuine high toxicity white lead paint nowadays? It was used then as not only was it a very high grade undercoat it was extremely good at preventing rot as the first attempts by any spores of fungus or other micro organisms were usually their last as the white lead would kill them off. I fear that as those deck planks dry out they may well open up and allow leaks to begin. I've seen west system epoxy used in conjunction with a glass fibre mat to replicate the process using white lead and canvas to very good effect. If you do experience any leaks later it may be an answer to that problem without any need to try and re seal the decking. I wish you well and good luck with the rest of your restoration.

Wonderful old boat. It has real style. I will love to see her all polished up and running once more. As a historical piece it is interesting, but it has classic lines and will be the talk of any harbor when she pulls in on a nice sunny summer day. The young people may not know her history, but they can see her serious pedegree. Congratulations on all the hard work so far. Don't leave it sit for too long. Get back on her and get her finished. She deserves to be out and about once more. Thanks for posting.

Great content , I do hope the sun does not attack the exposed wood. UV varnish product need constant maintenance. I know it's too late now but it would be better if you pushed with the caulk nozzle in front , it seems weird but it does a much better job filling the grooves. But boats is really looking good . Cheers Warren.

Thanks Warren. I don't think I'll mind the extra bit of maintenance once all the roof timber finishes in a similar fashion to the bow planking. It certainly make the hard work worthwhile seeing the finish.

Hey there. New subscriber. Love seeing an old wooden boat restored to it's original beauty. If you're planning on using this boat as a tiny off grid home, check out "Finding Simon - Sink or Swim". He's doing the same thing with a catamaran and he's going total electric, with 8 solar panels supplying all of his power needs. It's very instructive and entertaining. Good luck on the restoration and keep up the good work.

@@LakesideProductions word! Few other things - I've used it a ton. It stays tacky for a week, which can be a pain, but it stays flexible and never seems to break down like other sealants I've used (seems unaffected by UV exposure). Smells oddly like melted hot fudge - the cheap kind of fake stuff that comes in a glass jar. I noticed the guy and girl on "Salt and Tar" use it as well. Good luck amigo!

refugees in a different country besides your own. you do know refugee also means homeless right ? always start helping the homeless in your home country before worrying about your neighboring countries. although, i must say helping them out isn't a bad thing. i'm just saying look around at your own country before worring about another country.
