I've had the pleasure of knowing Cliff for more than 25 years, and I'm always impressed by the depth and the breadth of his knowledge when it comes to offshore voyaging. As he points out early in his terrfic presentation here, he's been involved in sailing, cruising and exploring by sea for just about his entire life, so the knowledge he imparts here comes from a man who has gone to sea and speaks from deep experience. He tell it like it is!

I read about your video on Trawler forum. I am very impressed by both your knowledge and the quality of this video. This clearly took you a lot of time. I have made the San Diego to San Francisco trip several times and expect to make it to PNW in a year or two so the information is invaluable! Thank you! Looking forward to future episodes.

Thank you so much for this terrific video. We own a Nordhavn 43 here in the Seattle area with plans to visit Alaska through the inside passage when things open back up, and then head down the coast to Mexico later on. I watched the first 15 minutes of this video and then realized I couldn’t watch it without my first mate alongside. The advice and wisdom you’ve shared is invaluable to us. THANK YOU!

Great video having spent a large part of my life on the ocean including 4 years in the Coast Guard in the North Pacific & Having a boat build from start. The one thing not mentioned is simply you had better start with a large pile of $$$$$

Hi Clint. I appreciate your feedback and you are right...I decided that I had likely scared people enough without adding the insult of how much this adventure might cost. It's also hard to tell how much it will cost, depending on the initial condition of the boat, how well it is equipt, the condition they want to keep their boat in and how much of the work they will outsource?

If I could make a suggestion, i would amend the Title of this video, as I am an avid boater and passed over this channel many times and just checked out the video on a lark...OMG anyone who is into expedition traveling in the Pacific Northwest or anywhere would die to know about this channel...your subscribers should be over a million...consider a title like: A Sailor's Bible for Expedition Cruising the Pacific Northwest...your subs will grow exponentially, I promise you..PS, been waiting for a channel like this for years...a roadmap for me who plans to live and travel the Pacific Northwest for the next 20 years...thank you thank you thank you...and some Stan Jones, or done home mariner music or Irish seafaring music would be nice inter-spaced throughout your videos in the background....just my very humble two cents worth...I am just shocked how lucky I was to stumble on this channel and that has alot to do with the lack of info in the title..its all about click bait when drawing new customers, I thought this was a dating site...lol...and thank you for not being a flaming leftist pearl clutching virtue signalling Marxist bully drumming climate change trope throughout your entire video...you have kept this pure, all about and everything about sailing....and for that I am deeply appreciative...Landlocked in Toronto, Ontario until my purchase is finalized...I'm considering purchasing a 63 foot converted Navy Coastal Tug for the Inside Passage to Alaska...its sixty year history was spent plying the waters between Seattle and Alaska....so it has proved itself before it was converted to a live aboard pleasure craft.....it is already well appointed...large water maker, 6000 gallon fuel tanks, double generators, 12 Cylinder single engine, oversized bow and stern thrusters...the cost was the main incentive. [250 G] ..I could not build a steel tug for this cost or convert one...the Navy Tugs were over specked, you know the rest....the freezers etc. air compressors, this vessel is capable of 3 months minimum at sea needing only occasional fresh fruit and vegetable stops and fuel top ops if price is attractive...the steering system, four stations allows for easy single handing of a 63 ft. vessel or with a partner...crab pots, lobster traps, and halibut rigging...I'm in heaven already...I will not step on board until I have watched everyone of your videos and incorporated all of your maintenance, safety and provisioning routines...I'm hoping that us land lubbers may be able to purchase logs etc. etc. things that we may need to incorporate your methodology and approach to safe passage making. Thank you again Cliff for the gift of this channel...we are at a time where it is now much more affordable to purchase a well appointed vessel than a house...and when things get bad, you can always go on the hook to cut back on expenses...my friends expenses are very limited during their trip and incursions up the Inside passage, free mooring unless in a Park, etc. etc. just fuel and food, and a good wine bar for happy hour at the end of every day cruising...the only other channel that comes close to the information here was put out by The Dashews, which sadly they are no longer mfg sail or power boats as they built amazing safe vessels with exceptional sea keeping abilities...look them up if you haven't already ...i had planned for years to purchase an Expedition vessel when i retired, unfortunately they are too far outside my budget...and I believe this Tug is more than enough for me to live aboard till they bury me.... I love the design of Oasis, did I notice that a bow thrust er in the front of the bulbous bow? I have never seen that before If that is what I seen...makes sense...the farther forward the thruster, the tighter the turning radius I'm thinking...but what do I know...I know very little which is why I am here to learn...so I will step down off the soap box, shut my pie hole and turn on my listening flaps

Hi Don. Thank you for your thoughtful note. Truth be told, I am a bit of a clumsy dinosaur when it comes to KZbin, putting this information together and definitely promoting the site. I like your suggestions and, short of changing the name (which might be confusing to our existing audience) see if I can incorporate some of your suggestions. You were also right, that it is not a dating site! Our bow thruster is located as far forward as possible and just at the trailing edge of the bulb (ie. as far forward and deep as possible). Your 63' tug sounds like my kind of boat and wish you a lot of luck. Having had OASIS in Toronto (2013) I can tell you it's a long trip to the Pacific Northwest (unless you use decide to use a freighter). Best of luck to you and thanks again for your suggestions............Cliff

I have run all the CA passages in this video, and can only disagree with the evaluation of Bodega Bay. I travel up there from SF Bay about every 2 years, and have found Spud Point Marina (maintained by Sonoma County) to be one of the best marinas I've ever been in. However, I agree other marinas in BB may be less than desirable. Only problem with Spud Point is you are about 3/4 mile from the town of Bodega Bay and its shopping and restaurants.

Thank you for your comment. It has been a number of years since I've been into Bodega Bay, so I appreciate your feedback on Spud Point Marina. I'll certainly make it a point to stop by and to pay my respects next time I'm in the area. Good to know that they are back on their feet and doing well...............Cliff

As relatively new live-aboards (2 + years) on our Nordhavn 57 we both thoroughly enjoyed this. although my wife has vetoed any thoughts of this particular trip! :) we will have a look at the rest of Cliff's videos as we move to cross the Mediterranean and Atlantic next year and onwards to Australia.

sounds like you have a smart first mate. We have made 2 trips over to Europe. We stayed for 1 year the first time and 3 years the second time. The workload is much higher than boating in the USA, but that is part of what it made it a great experience and adventure. Preparation is everything (all metric fittings, 50 vs. 60 Hz, docking (warping winches), spares, etc.). I'm sure you'll have a great time!

@JTLYK IXOYE I have thought about this several times over the past 29 years on OASIS and I feel that I was very fortunate to have made the choice of going with a Delta 70. It has done everything and more that I had intended and has been a great oportunity to learn and grow. OASIS is full displacement and like most boats, LOVES following seas! I've made that trip up and down the West Coast more times than I care to remember....at the end of most every Northbound trip my feeling is that if I never see the Pacific Ocean again that would be OK. the East Coast of the United States is much easier. The offshore fishermen are an entirely different breed of boater. My hat's off to them!
@AnAchievableDream
@AnAchievableDream 2 жыл бұрын
@JTLYK IXOYE All the boats you mention sound like good choices for your application. My friend just put his Hampton 68 on the market, which I'm sure is in "like new" condition. It goes without saying that our wives are always the deciding factor....that's biblical. Best of luck...........Cliff

@AnAchievableDream

Prices seem to vary wildly depending on supply and demand, fuel costs, distance traveled, time of year, destination, port costs, etc. In terms of taking the boat on its own bottom, that depends on fuel consumption, crew, condition of the vessel, range, additional equipment which might e required for an offshore passage, dockage, etc. It really is boat and transit specific. We've paid about $300 per ln. ft. 5 years ago to take OASIS from Ensenada to Victoria (as "deck cargo"). That was a good rate, but it still seemed (to us) more trouble than it was worth for such a short haul. Thank you for watching.
