Jon machinist 45yrs here have you disassembled the frame from the adjustment screw and vertical support bar. I would like to add 2 assist springs to keep light tension on the whole thing, like a press
@CuttingBoardRx10 ай бұрын
@@broken1965 I think the assembly is more akin to the tool feed drive on a lathe: a worm gear with a parallel shaft. So all that was needed was additional bearing pressure on the shaft side. Unfortunately they left that side open hence the zip tie fix, no way to fit a bushing there.

If you don't mind me asking what are your thoughts on the lansky Precision Sharpening Kits ? It's a nice small rig that is easy to field carry .
@CuttingBoardRx9 ай бұрын
@@daryenmirabal2656 just saw the question. If I was looking for a portable kit, the WSPA is much better than the Lansky. The latter’s stones fall out and crack in the middle of sharpening and just for that I would boycott the brand, so disrespectful I find the lack of proper adhesive. But, since it was my first fixed angle sharpener, here’s the truth: It nearly destroyed my confidence in the ability to sharpen knives. With all its shortcomings, the small WSPA is a decent portable tool.

Haha! I intentionally poked fun at their engineering department! I am of that profession and if I was a betting man, the bet would be the prototype was all metal and somewhere along the way the design got “optimised” for production. The logic is that professionals would use stone wheels or shop belt sanders so they didn’t expect some amateur doing 20-30 sharpenings per month. Thanks for the great comment!

First. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!! I also have the professional sharpener. I’ve used it from "Victoninox "to Magnacut steel. I’m gonna solve the problems 1 &2 this afternoon. Thank you again I never had problem 3 maybe because I don’t use the original stones. I bought, from Gritomatic a 6 inch stone holder (hapstone brand) and I use Venev centaur double side stones and Nano Cloths with diamond “spray”. The scratch pattern in the blade is better. My problem with this system is with long knifes. A 8 inch blade, if has 15 deg at the center of the clamp, will have 10 deg at the tip or at the heel, no matter how you clamp the knife. Another problem with long and thin knives is that they bend using only 1 clamp. 2 clamp system is better. Anyway, my kitchen knives cut towel paper even with those isues

Welcome to the tribe! The fine grit plates, 600 and 800, last well over 50 sharpenings. The heavier grits don’t get used as much so I haven’t replaced them yet. I don’t like the strop that came with the set a s the leather is waaaay too rough. You shouldn’t need to keep the fixed angle for stropping anyway, so I recommend a dedicated strop

I just bought this system, I really appreciate the insights, I’ll definitely be implementing them. What are your tips for holding onto knives like the 940 or spydercos with a distal taper like the para 3 ?
@mtbrdude2 ай бұрын
The biggest flaw with this type of guided sharpener is that the rod is anchored in one spot. This means it swivels in a perfect circle. Well, unless your knife blade is also the same shape of that circle, your angle is going to change from the base to the tip of the blade. Try measuring your angle with the arm centered on a flat part of the blade, straight out perpendicular to the blade....then keep the angle reader on and move the sharpening stone over to the tip: your angle has changed! The longer the knife, the more pronounced this problem will be. Even the $1200 Wicked Edge has this issue and nobody talks about it.

Very nice review! But I have to ask: Is there an even better sharpener out there that you would recommend over this one? I am currently contemplating ordering this. The system I have been using for many years is the old Lansky system. I take it that even with these issues, this one will still beat out that old system?
@CuttingBoardRx9 ай бұрын
I was eyeing the Wicked Edge system which the only other system in that isn’t priced out of my reach. But it is basically a more expensive version of the same approach. It is $100 more in its most basic form and to get everything you’d want in your arsenal expect $900-1500 total investment. The only major difference from WSPPA is you don’t have to flip the knife and you can sharpen both sides semi-simultaneously in an alternating fashion. I gave it some though but decided that I would never be able to trust that system as my left and right hands don’t exhort the same force. And I like to keep my left hand on the underside of the blade almost at all times to feel for sudden changes. Also, you would end up having to buy and store twice as much abrasive media. WSPPA is a huge improvement on Lansky and the inclinometer comes with it so you can always have repeatable angles

This is a GREAT video! My hat’s off to you. Not only did you uncover design flaws, you thought out and tested fixes. It’s a shame that one has to make these modifications to a brand new design to allow it to give consistent results. Shame on the engineers at Worksharp. I am currently considering an upgrade to a better mousetrap than my Hapstone Pro. I would not give this a serious look until Worksharp makes these fixes in the manufacturing process. I am now a subscriber. Great video. I also use work WSPPA. If i may ask, how long does it take you to sharpen a 5-inch blade, plus reprofiling the blade angle ?

I found an additional wobble problem. The jaws that hold the knife have a piece of rubber on each jaw. These allow vertical wobble. Any idea how to fix that? In my opinion, with all of these problems, they should recall the Precision Adjust Pro, and fix the problems for free.

What do you think of the precision Elite ? , does it have simmular issues ? . My budget wise right now is $125. Thank you for showing this. For the price they want for this , there shuold't be those issues.
@CuttingBoardRx10 ай бұрын
WSPA is what I started with. I would buy just the base kit for 60 bucks, without the “elite” paraphernalia which is just a fancy case and 3 additional diamond plates. Instead go on @neevesknives channel, he has links where you could get an aftermarket stone holder for 22 bucks that lets you use WSPA with any 4” stone. That’s where the dollar difference should go. If you’re totally new to this, don’t worry, his channel will get you up to speed. He does Live chats and you can ask him directly.

I just got a new one and the biggest issue I've found so far is how much flex the blade has within the clamping jaws. With the spine seated as far back as it can go, it doesn't take much force on the blade to see the spine actually move within the tightened jaw. It seems to me the jaws come together at an angle that is way too steep, which allows for very little actual contact area to apply clamping force with. Have you seen this problem as well?

Hi, Thank you very much for the great video. I was initially a bit scared about the problems with the Worksharp. I am still waiting for the delivery of my sharpener. I already ordered the bronze bushings directly from Amazon. If mine also shows these problems, I can fix it directly with your tips. But are you still satisfied with the Worksharp Pro? Sincerely, from Germany

I am satisfied with the tool itself and how well the abrasive plates are holding up.

Hi, I just purchased a used one and don't see the white nylon bushings that butt up against the black bands which limit stroke. Some review videos (including by Worksharp themselves, at least the one I watched) don't show those. Did you add those yourself? Or perhaps they stopped including them? It seems they would help as I'm moving the bands just by bumping them with strokes. Thanks again!
@CuttingBoardRx6 ай бұрын
I added them myself and they came out of the old paint roller. They kept the rubber washers in place in case I got too enthusiastic with the stroke

Thanks for a great review. I replaced the nylon bushings with brass ones from Amazon but am having a problem. After sharpening for awhile the bushings seem to gum up and bind on the steel at the far bottom end of the rod. It appears that either the lube in the bushings is gumming up or maybe the rod heats up and expands (I would expect the bushings to expand also). I did check the diameter of the rod with a digital caliper and its straightness by rolling it on a flat surface. Any advice? Thanks

A drop of gun oil on the rod every so often should help

Will the self lubricating bronze bushing cause any wear to the rod? I'm going to do all of your fixes. I'm not that good at sharpening knives yet but I might as well start off with my worksharp being squared away. Still struggling with figuring out all the factory angles of all my different knives. Never sure what degree to set them to. Thanks for the video
@CuttingBoardRx9 ай бұрын
Are you using the Sharpie method to find the factory angle? Also, if you plan to change the angle from X to say 17 degrees, there’s no need to figure out what the X is. Just clamp the knife, set 17 degrees on one side, make sure that it’s also 17 on the other side and start sharpening with the 240 grit. The bushings are designed specifically for this application so I wouldn’t worry too much. The burrs that come off the blade, if some get inside the abrasive holder, mostly get caught by the magnet on the inside.
@bjhiss279 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply, I ordered 10 of those bushings. Also, thanks for the advice on sharpening angles. @@CuttingBoardRx

Thank you for the brilliant information, really annoys me that Worksharp overlooked or didn’t recognise these issues at design and testing phase, especially as they had a previous iteration to learn from, Worksharp will never thankyou, they would be admitting their fault in design, it almost put me off buying it to be honest, I’ve already ordered it, just waiting for stock to arrive at my UK store, I’ve also ordered the bushings off Amazon which are arriving today. I never trust sponsored reviews from the larger channels, unfortunately this is KZbin. Thanks again for the brilliant test and review, Subbed 😊

If I had to bet, the prototype had more metal hardware content than the production version. It happens often enough that the engineers lose these arguments with the suits that mind the profit margins. Besides, they were probably thinking that a person who sharpens blades for a living would not buy a tool like this. This is a product geared toward (borrowing photo camera terminology) an amateur or pro-mature DIY home-shop sharpener.

Sorry about the delayed response. I have been having too much fun with this sharpener to be totally unbiased. That said, there is no such thing in nature as a perfect mechanism: any mechanical device will have imperfections!
