Can’t wait to see more. Same latitude as the south of Norway. I had the same kind of foggy weather there in late July. I even had snow in mid summer there; so 🥶🥶. The polar circle is further away than you think. About a two days ride I guess with those speeds. Great surroundings. A lot more trees than in the mountain part of Norway.

You’re lucky you got the bike you wanted. I did a tour of the west coast, I ordered a Jeep Cherokee but ended up with a crappy Buick. LA, SanDiego, all the way up to Seattle then home. Good times though. That was in my mid twenties, forties now. I’ve lost my confidence a bit after dealing with anxiety issues especially after the stupid lockdown 😤. I love your channel and the legend that is Freddie Dobbs. I long to get my confidence back to be able to do stuff like you guys. Keep up the good work 👍🏻🇬🇧

Brilliant! I didn't get my bike licence 'till I was 50 (23 years ago) persuaded to do it by flying mates who were also bikers (the two interests often go together as you of course know). I signed up for a Motorrad Tour after just a year and a bit of motorcycling - Spain & Morocco! I explained to the tour organiser that I was pretty inexperienced but they said I'd be fine - and I was! By then I'd been through a VFR and a Blackbird (neither of which gelled with me) and had a 4 year old R1150GS, which I found suited me well except it was a tad tall for my 29" inside leg (this was before the days of lowered GS availability). I had an absolute whale of a time! I loved it! Your 'ride on the right' sticker looks a tad inconspicuous,. Coming off the ferry at Santander an experienced member of our group on discovering I'd never ridden on the right before took one of the white sticky tape labels the ferry company stick on your bike, tore off a 2-inch length, and stuck it on the RH side of my windscreen, folded round so it was stuck front and back of the screen, and always in my line of sight. "Keep the edge of the road on that side" he instructed. That tape did its job a couple of times on that trip. We gelled into a group of 30 or so mates on the 3.5 week epic, and met up for weekend rides after that holiday such was the camaraderie. I even took some of them for aerobatic experiences in our Chipmunk! Later, I did another Motorrad trip to the Italian Lakes with many of the mates who I did Morocco with. Not quite as much an adventure as the Sahara, but fabulous fun none the less, especially the Stelvio and other Alpine and Dolomite passes. Our tour leader to Morocco was absolutely superb; the one to Italy less so. I usually rode with a couple of more experienced bikers, but in these days of universal sat navs I might have risked some solo riding. I shall watch the rest of this series with interest! But to this day (although Motorrad make it easy by booking all ferries and hotels) I still find it amazing that I rode my bike from home in Cheshire to the Sahara desert and back.

Really enjoying this first episode. Rest assured, every US spec GS that you can actually buy comes with what BMW calls the “premium” package. It basically converts the bike from the stripped down model you rode into a bike that is probably indistinguishable from your TE version. I am surprised BMW had such a basic bike for a rental? A bike with no cruise, proper sat-nav integration, ESA, etc. doesn’t make a very good impression and won’t help BMW sell many bikes. And I can appreciate your comment about over-engineering in America. As an American who personifies that, I’ll tell you why I think you see so much of that. It basically comes down to many of us Americans wanting to “be prepared” for any contingency. Sure you don't utilize the towing capability of big truck every day but it is nice to have that capability should you need it. It is like having a big powerful touring bike with may more power and utility than you NEED to tour whereas a 650 twin will get the job done just as well but is is nice to have all that extra of everything you could possibly need. Looking forward to your next installment.

The gap in the doors in the rest rooms is to allow the stankie air to flow out of the stall. It is also for cleaning the floor with a wet mop and not stain the door with mop water. Also to get access to a person in trouble if the door is locked.
