What are the long-term benefits of music education for children?

Most children love listening or singing along to music. That is why music classes are usually quite a hit in schools. And yet, music classes are more than just a fun time. Studies have shown that the study of music is linked to improved academic performance, linguistic skills, confidence, and transferable skills that can be applied to many future endeavours.
In this first episode of our series ‘The Impact of Giving’, Professor Paul Smeets bring us through the research he is carrying out together with junior researcher Robin Arts on M-PX, an educational programme which introduces pop music to children. Through their research, they investigate how this type of programme might benefit children later on in life for instance by teaching children to be persistent and to cooperate better with others.

Through his research, Paul’s gaol is to help projects become more effective and, ultimately, contribute to a happier and healthier society.
Paul Smeets was appointed professor of philanthropy and sustainable finance by Maastricht University School of Business and Economics and the Elisabeth Strouven Foundation. In this role, his goal is to evaluate the impact of charitable projects, study what motivates people to give and explore new developments and trends in the world of philanthropy and sustainable finance.
