Episode 10: Fundamental Forces - The Mechanical Universe

Episode 10. Fundamental Forces: All physical phenomena of nature are explained by four forces: two nuclear forces, gravity, and electricity.
“The Mechanical Universe,” is a critically-acclaimed series of 52 thirty-minute videos covering the basic topics of an introductory university physics course.
Each program in the series opens and closes with Caltech Professor David Goodstein providing philosophical, historical and often humorous insight into the subject at hand while lecturing to his freshman physics class. The series contains hundreds of computer animation segments, created by Dr. James F. Blinn, as the primary tool of instruction. Dynamic location footage and historical re-creations are also used to stress the fact that science is a human endeavor.
The series was originally produced as a broadcast telecourse in 1985 by Caltech and Intelecom, Inc. with program funding from the Annenberg/CPB Project.

I had these books 30 years ago. At 83 and retired I love you tube where I can review these wonderful lectures. Great fun. Thank science for proven formula's that an average person can relate to, while a few experts continue the search for answers about reality. Science and Human Values by Bronowski also gives us legs to posit that true science creates human values and weakens the need for gods.

interessante , um acelerador de partículas com dupla utilização da mesma voltagem já produz mais energia do que no interior do sol , imagine se fizéssemos um acelerador de partículas com tripla , quadrupla até dez vezes a utilização da mesma voltagem . Talvez o LHC possa fazer isso .

Henry Cavendish era genial , ele demonstrou de forma prática que , não é preciso uma balança para medir a massa de um objeto , pois isso pode ser feito medindo a sua influência gravitacional , mas , sempre tem um otário que , critica os cientistas , dizendo que não tem como saber a massa da Terra . Outdated and completely wrong i'm afraid. There is one unified field called the electromagnetic which is dielectricity in discharge which is magnetism. All atomic volume in every single atom is only held in place by magnetism. Gravity is completely electrical and is NOT a force or field modality of itself by itself. One field in discharge. Magnetism IS the creation of space. The new structure atom model of the atom does away completely with the strong nuclear force. The SAM model will cause a stir I assure you. It only leaves electrostatics in the centre of the atom with the electron phenomena being the light speed induction rate at which they are generated. Electricity is a hybrid of dielectricity and magnetism. An example of dielectric field is lightning, this is not electricity. Electricity is dielectricity that has been magnetised or tamed.

This is so annoying. Whoever put the Annenberg Media logo at the front of these videos really made a mistake. It throws the whole audio off the video. I have watched these lectures more than once, so I know there was not always this Annenberg Media introduction. Can someone please put it back to what it was?

No, Einstein's theory of General Relativity explains gravity in a different way (using spacetime) than Isaac Newton's universal law of gravity, but it is still a theory about gravity. Have you ever tripped and fall? or drop something on the ground? That is gravity. It is one of the four fundamental forces - electromagnetism, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, and gravity. Einstein and many other physicists today are trying to figure out if there is an underlying force that unify these four forces.
