I restored a 32 foot 1938 Atkins Cabin Cruiser in my early 20s. I reckon I spent 25% of the time fishing and Diving, and 75% with the floorboards up doing maintenance and restoration. I'm in my sixties now, and those are Priceless Memories. "West systems" made a big difference for me. Best of luck to you.

My grandfather used to have wooden cruisers back in the 60's , 3 of them I remember, I've always loved them .I passed up a 32' Owens about 10 years ago (I let my wife and friend talk me out of it ) . I've regretted not buying it ever since . Keep it up.

I have owned 3 wooden boats, here in Norway there are as many ideas as to how to treat rot as there are owners, my advice is to use a mix one third turpentine, linseed oil, and something called tjære , when I translate it its called tar, (not asphalt ) keep up the good work (thumbs up)

Hi there thanks for another update👍 Not sure if you have ever heard of this stuff but it's called "Tiger Hair". We use to use it for all kinds of repairs on boats like this it's in a gallon container & comes with hardener it's a thick fiberglass mix & works perfect for vertical repairs like this & doesn't run, dries rock hard. Keep whittling away at it mate, Rome wasn't built in a day👍👍💛edit; What would be nice is to build some sort of tarp roof to keep the boat out of the elements year round. This would greatly reduce the amount of exterior re-work to give you more time for interior work. Just a thought.
@LakesideProductions4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Miguel, I'll check this stuff out sounds like good tack. You're right a tarp would certainly help keep the elements at bay. I'll see how I fair out by Winter my aim is to be living aboard through the Winter even if it's rough and I can tip away at the interior. Thanks for the encouraging words. New episode will be online shortly.

Double planked hulls we’re built with a layer of canvas between the planking layers. This canvas was set in bedding compound to create a waterproof layer. Over time the bedding compound dries out and the canvas will rot as water works it’s way into it. The only solution is either fiberglass the outer surface of the hull or pull the outer layer of planking and the canvas and replank the outside of the hull set in epoxy and fiberglass the exterior surface.

An ice pick is a great way to discover rotten wood. I don't know anything about wood hardener. I do know about rotten boats, sinking faster than you can get a lifejacket on. 🤘😎

You need a low pressure, paint sprayer, it will cut your paint.ing time to 1/4 , of course 1/4 more time to clean up the sprayer

Good video. You just showed up in my recommendations. I follow some similar channels. If you're interested in feedback of what I think would make your videos better (for me): kill the massage music (all music), make it more personal - tell us more about the boat/project/you, show us more of the boat, - tour, what's been done, what needs to be done, show us more of you, too ;P

You’re doing a great job mostly, do you have anyone you can ask about the correct way to use your tools? Using that electric plane on the tiny piece of wood in a metal vice is a big no no, some of the hand tools you have deserve a well earned retirement, you can pick up a decent set of screw drivers for next to nothing. I’m going to put some money on you PayPal towards a tool fund 😊👍

Looking good. Is your plan to place a teak molding strip where you were filling the holes above the windows? It will be awesome when finished. 👍👍👍
@LakesideProductions4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Clay, originally hockey stick shape strips were used in places and I'm reluctant to use them as they can trap water. But now that you've suggested teak I could run it down to size and route the edge. I'll have a think and research what shape strip would works best. Progress is definitely being made these days, she's coming together nicely. Thanks for watching and commenting

first of all, you need to pull the ship out of the water onto land and examine the hull from beginning to end, and you get that you washed your eyes, and your whole face remained in mud 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 NO COOL !!!!!
@dee106ful4 жыл бұрын
Epoxying the hull isn't a good idea. Firstly there's no need for that on a wooden hull. First issue f you get the slightest ingress of water it's going to encourage rot in a big way, Wood needs to breathe If it goes rotten soggy or spongey you need to operate. Cut out and re caulk properly it will last a 100 years. You may not have the skill but you'll learn after a few mistakes. This isn't a fibreglass boat stop repairing it s if it were. Yeah it might float but all your efforts and good hard effort is producing dodgy workmanship.

Totally the wrong way to use risen. Rotten wood should always be removed and replaced so should any cracked or broken boards or planks. Adding risen over bad wood is begging for trouble down the line and creates a nightmare for a professional shipwright. The horrible putty on the potholes ( windows) has got to go. Justvspend an extra dollar an get the proper gaskets/ seals.
