Episode 15 - 9-5 PCV Upgrade

In this episode, we'll replace the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) on an early-ish B235R Aero engine. The original PCV system had some issues that added to oil-consumption and sludge creation on these engines. SAAB had a few attempts at upgrading the system and this was their last attempt to fix the old design before changing the design for Model Year 2004.

I did this in the dark outside in January in Connecticut along with the rear motor mount. The hardest part was putting the new hoses on the plastic box after it was attached to the block. They were very stubborn and very little finger room.

They were a little stubborn but I didn't have much trouble overall. Might be due to the cars here being right hand drive. I think there's a few instances where having RHD makes stuff easier (and also a few that are harder!)

After a plethora of cars over the years.... i came across a 2001 SAAB 9-5 SE..... on line from an auction web site, and wondering what i had bought, have i made a mistake, have a bought a lemon. Well it turned out to be a well maintained car that had unfortunately been neglected over the past 5 years. With moss growing in the drainage gutters. Anyway i have replaced a couple of hoses and with out this video the upper valve cover hose would have been a puzzle. I removed the oil filler tube which gave me a little wiggle room, but what a bloody job... but i did it. I'm sure it has made a difference but not that i have noticed. However the hose was think inside so I'm sure the car breaths a bit better. Thanks for the vid it gave me the confidence to change it. Cheers.!

For the vacuum line I just took the coolant hoses off the throttle body and it slipped right on no issue! Great guide, really helped me out!

Yeah I toyed with that idea, but it would have meant either some coolant loss or rummaging in the shed to find my fuel line clamps. Thanks for sharing the top though, given that the o-rings on the throttle body can go bad, this might make much more sense in the future.

To connect the new pcv valve, you could use an air pistol heater to heat and soft the vaccum tube....also could use some vaseline

Wanted to see what's inside the oil separator now I see its a simple design. Pro parts Sweden got a bad reputation of being low quality parts but I don't think they would cock up this plastic box. Cheers

You should be able to see it in installation instructions at 16:26 onward. If it's the pipe I think you are talking about, it's labelled as "13" in the diagram.

@@H8XME Yeah, SAAB seemed to use the template from the v6 filler but didn't drill the hole out. Catches a lot of people out and you can't really blame them when they see a nozzle with nothing plugged into it!

Hello , I was wondering if you guys could help - my throttle body does not have the 3rd nipple for vacuum - the check valve pipe is just hanging.

Can you let me know what year your car is and possibly upload a photo of the throttle body somewhere for me to have a look? The throttle body did change at some point (I think MY2003) it's possible, that someone has changed yours for the different model.

Oi. You know after you install the oil dipstick tube with the fitting on it. Then you place the hose on it it with the t. What in the hell does that open t hook into? I'm a bit lost
