Episode 15 - Joji Locatelli and Sewing the Steeks

In Episode 15 we speak to Argentinian knitwear designer Joji Locatelli. We see a bit more of the Firebird steeks, picking up the stitches for the sleeves and trimming and finishing the edges. Some KAL news and some chatter.

Thank you for showing how to pick up the stitches for the sleeves. I fondly remember my Addi-Click tunesian crochet hooks whenever I see something like that (also the 3 needle bind off benefits from them). The Crochet hooks are of course compatible with knitting needles from the same company, so the wires fit both. For the buttons of Andrea's cardigan, I'd have selected something like gray mother of pearl buttons, that match the small "belt" design which goes around the waist. Make one fake and one real button alternating, to blend in with the other design elements.

I have just recently found your podcast. I am really enjoying it. I have been a knitter for almost 10 years but have really never challenged myself all that much. You and Andrew have really inspired me to take on some of the patterns I have only admired from afar. I have also begun to teach myself to knit continental (I'm a flicker) so that I can use both hands. I have always thought fair isle was out of reach for me but I am thinking my 2017 goal may be to finish a fair isle project. I always adored red hair and I always wanted to be a redhead with lush thick hair. I would consider the names "ginger and carrot top" as a compliment, haha. When I grew up in Germany, beeing the child of a german father and a greek mother, it was very hard. It was the 60s and 70s and there weren`t many foreigners around yet. As the child of a "Gastarbeiter" mother I always wanted to look like the other german girls. Many of them had blond, straight hair. We did have two redheads in our elementary school class :-) One a boy and one girl. :-) As the years went by I learned to love my hair and myself more and more and that was very freeing. Now I can apprechiate other peoples beauty without comparing it to mine and enjoy the wonderous variety there is in our world. Lovely podcast as always Andrea and Andrew.

Just to add, the buttons seem to pick up on the circles round the sort of waist green band. But it is hard to tell on screen. Buttons are a real problem, it is so hard to find a good selection of interesting modern buttons in a variety of colours... A gap in the market there I think

Does this hooky wool what causes itchy wool on the skin ? I want to make a fair isle but my skin is extremely sensitive , thanks to Fibromyalgia.

I cannot use such scratchy wool too but you can use a super wash yarn and instead use a reinforcement row of sewing up the line of stitches either side before you cut. There are tutorials on reinforcing steeks before cutting them.

Hallo Andrea, Du hast den Cardigan Firebird von Jade Starmore zum jumper für Andrew abgeändert. Ich suche einen pattern für einen langen Cardigan bis zum Knie . Ich liebe die Fair Isle Designs der Starmore‘s. Ob ich eine lange Version von Firebird oder Katherine from Aragon machen könnte. Was meinst du? Ich möchte den pattern aber auch gerne um die Schulter anpassen, so in dem Style wie die Cardigans von Sidsel, damit er unter dem Arm nicht so weit wird . Kannst du mir einen Hinweis geben, wo und wie ich Hilfe finden könnteund ob der Cardigan nachher noch harmonisch wirkt. Ich hoffe du verstehst meine Frage auf deutsch . Wenn du möchtest können wir auch auf englisch schreiben. LG Konstanze

Ginger is a complimentary term in the US . BLUEY ...? I wonder if it’s o.rigins go back to King Henry vlll and the tudors ... Referring to royalty or”blueblood? Very interesting how something rare and prized for its beauty in some countries is not in Others Women in many countries use a natural henna dye to capture the rich auburn glow .In any case your hair gleams. I’d trade it for my boring brunette !

I didn’t mind being called Red or Carrot Top but I did mind being tease because I was short for my age. I finally reached 5ft 1 1/2 inches in college. I’m almost 70 yrs old so I’ve lost back to 4’ 11” due to degenerative disc disease. I love the buttons!
