I found your podcast recently via The Fox and the Sheep. As I am food chemist by education myself, I feel some kind of sisterhood with you. Systematic thinking and approach to things :) I enjoy how you explain things and there is always something to learn from your podcasts. I love your cardigan very much, the colour of yarn and the wooden buttons are right up to my alley :) Thank you for putting your time and energy to this podcast!

Slowly catching up with your oldest videos and I really must point out how I love the scientific bits of your podcast! It's always so interesting and easy to follow, just the perfect amount of science for people who aren't actually scientists themselves. (And of course, all the crafty and more personal parts of your podcast are great too!) I really enjoy spending time in your company while knitting! Thanks a lot for sharing your fiber adventures with us! - Ania

Hello Anna! Happy New Year! Lovely to see your embroidery--when you were talking about the stitches, I was remembering my days of cross-stitch work and how much fun it was :) Your new cardigan is gorgeous and I appreciate the ways that simple garments can be the BEST and most favorite and most worn! It's beautiful on you and fits perfectly. Well done! Thanks for the chemistry segment, too; you know it's one of my favorite segments you present on here. I'm hoping work is going well, even if you're busy. Stay warm! The new mittens should help

Dear Anna, What a wonderful episode! We've missed you! Our knitting community is so lucky to have you and your scientific videos about fibers! It was fascinating to find out about the scales and intersting properties... Please please do include them more often, it's so educational! Also I hope to see more dying in the next episode :))) You know, I'm very excited about it!! As for our KAL, yes the deadline should be extended may be for a couple of more months, why not? Have a wonderful weekend! Love from Bali!

At the moment it's hard to catch daylight for dyeing, and I am still working on dyeing unicorn kits, because there are so many requests 😅 But you know me - I will certainly get back to some experimental dyeing and of course I will share that on the podcast too! Yesss a couple more months and many many more self-dyed projects to admire ;-) Love from Switzerland to Bali!

Hi Anna and Happy New Year! I am a handspinner and just love the feeling of pure natural wool fibre in my hands. Thank you for the segment dedicated to explaining the superwash process....I have never enjoyed knitting with superwash because I find it always feels so "stringy" and I always seem to split the yarn....now I have even more reason to stay clear of it. I believe that as consumers we can change the way companies process their yarn by making informed buying choices. I can't wait to see how you ply up your handspun. Thank you for the great podcast...I just subscribed. Take Care. Jackie

Hi Jackie and Happy New Year to you too! Oh how much I agree with you on the feel of superwash vs native wool on the hands. Especially as a handspinner! I have started a spinning project out of superwash fiber 1.5 years ago. I thought it would be good for socks. But I still haven't finished spinning it, because I just don't like how it feels. Happy you joined the podcast, and would love to see some of your spinning projects as well (maybe on ravelry?). All the best!

I am a ravelry member but don't post projects there (I have no idea why this is so) but you can find a few pictures on instagram where my user name is jackiegirardjones and on facebook as Life at Porcupine Hollow. I must clarify that I do knit occasionally with superwash when I make socks for others because one never knows if the recipient will launder carefully enough :)

Wonderful "meeting" you. Thank you for the information and explanation of the super wash process. I knew I preferred the natural wool and loved the "stickiness" of the fibre, but never thought further as to why. I always just told my knitting friends that it was just because it felt like I was working with something that was closer to the sheep! You have given me just a bit more to think about when making my yarn choices thank you! Looking forward to watching your future podcasts, happy 2018!

I do hope more companies will start to use the ecologically safe “superwash” treatment. So many of the popular indie dyers use regular superwash for their yarns. I prefer natural wools in natural colors or eco dyed. Thank you!! for this wonderful explanation of the process. I wish every knitter was aware. Your Ramona cardigan is the best. Have a great new year.

Hi Leslie! I agree with you, it would be great to see the industry turn completely to greener superwash treatments. I am quite optimistic that this will happen! At the moment it is still hard to get bluesign superwash yarn for dyeing in most countries I think. That's why so many indie dyers use the regular one, it's just abundantly available. Happy New Year to you too!

@dunkelgrun1425
@dunkelgrun1425 6 жыл бұрын

Patricia from Knitography said those mittens can be knit loosely at first because they traditionally get felted to your hand size after, also so they are wind proof.

Hey Sarah, how nice to hear that you as another chemist also enjoy those segments! Happy to connect with you :) It's hard to find books on these subjects that explain the things on a scientific level. I like to search scientific databases (web of science or scopus) to find articles on the subject. It might be a good idea to start a link / reference collection in the ravelry group for fellow scientists :)

Yes aren't those fish birds the best? I think in English this one would be a grey heron. They are always hanging out at the river close to my house and look like statues. Sometimes even with a fish in their beak that they must have forgotten to swallow 😆 Happy New Year hug to you!

Hi and thank you very much for your comment. To be honest, I have no idea which superwash process they are using. The two companies I have mentioned are probably not the only ones who use bluesign processes. I just did a little research and found that Schachenmayr apparently belongs to a big big company which also owns Rowan and Red Heart yarns (isn't that crazy?). Maybe it would be interesting if we knitters wrote letters to big yarn companies like that and express our wish for environmentally friendly alternatives. I also like the Schachenmayr yarn by the way, especially Regia! Sigh!

Hi Anna! Thank you for the superwash explanation, I did not know that the water resistancy is affected! I do not really care much for superwash as I hand wash all my knits anyway (even socks). I am however still a beginner knitter and would like to use more affordable yarns, not indie died yarn that would ruin me (and I would ruin the yarn). DROPS yarn is available in my country and I thought all their wool yarns were superwash treated, but apparently only a few are (all the merino ones, the sock yarn, Karisma and Delight). At least something. I know many knitters do not like the company (apparently pattern stealing-wise), but I have not heard much about their yarns being bad. Have you tried their yarn? I think I remember you used Fabel for your first hand-dyeing, or maybe I am wrong :) I found out about Holst Garn, which also looks quite affordable, so maybe I will try that one soon :) Your Ramona sweater is gorgeous, I am intrigued to cast on one such myself. Have a nice day :) Petra from Slovakia

Hi Petra, thank you for your lovely comment. I am happy that you liked the episode. I have used a lot of Drops garnstudio yarn before, especially when I was a new knitter. Their yarns are really good quality, and the price-performance ratio is unbeatable in my opinion. Yes I have also heard about the controversies going on with their patterns. Sigh. I don't want to detail my opinions about that here. Yes I used Fabel also for some dyeing experiments, but my very first handdyed were fibers and my first handspun yarns back in 2012 😅 You can also try to find yarns here: www.loveknitting.com/ At the bottom of the page you can change the country to Slovakia. But I have no idea if the shipping costs are affordable to Slovakia. They carry the Jamieson's of Shetland yarn that I used for my sweater in this episode, and that's also quite an affordable yarn. They also carry cascade 220 (non-superwash) which is affordable and I heard only good things about it (but haven't tried it yet). I hope that helps! Happy knitting to Slovakia!

Hi Anna. First of all, please don't feel obliged to answer all the Ravelrymessages. I think everyone understands it is not necessary to do so. A answer here and there is more then enough :-) Your Ramona cardigan looks beautiful and the mittens are going the same way. Have you ever thoughed about those mittens with a 'topflap'? Then you dan keep your fingers warm and still be able to use your fingers. Your embroidery'samplers' look beautiful! Thank you so much for the superwash-explanation: now I understand so much better the difference between wool and superwash (especially for dyeing *Ü*). I hope the stress at your work is nearly over now the new year has started! See you again. Marjan

Dear Marjan, happy New Year to you again (it can't harm to say it many times, right?) Thank you for your encouraging words about the "answering messages" subject. I still want to be able to answer to everyone, because it is so nice to connect with all the amazing people! Oh yes, I had a pair of fingerless gloves with such a top flap before! They were out of DK or worsted weight yarn and that was quite bulky... maybe I should make a pair out of fingering weight! Thank you for the good wished! All the best, Anna

Hi Anna, thank you for a very informative podcast. Is the bluesign certification an international one? I'm from Australia and I have not seen or heard of this certification down here.

Hi Judith! Yes from what I understand, companies from all around the world can get their products bluesign certified. It is not so well known yet in the handknitting/crafting sector I think. You can find information here: www.bluesign.com/consumer/how-to-find-it.html

Thanks for the lesson. I noticed that superwash marino stretches out with wear, but shrinks back when washed. Is this related to the scales too or a totally different reason?
@dunkelgrun1425
@dunkelgrun1425 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen! Yes that is totally related to the scales as well! The slick superwash fibers can slide more easily past each other, so that gravity and wear can deform the project easily. The scales in non-superwash fibers create a lot more friction between the fibers, so they are more locked in place. That's also why those are especially good for colorwork projects, because the scales cause the stitches of different colors to stick together ;-)

Look like a criminal when you wear it...lol!! Bet it keeps your man warm though ;-) Your Ramona cardigan is just beautiful and will go with anything you wear. The buttons are a lovely touch. Re:mitts, make yourself a pair in really girly colors and maybe your man won't try to "adopt" them. Ha!

Hahaha! Yes it keeps him warm. He is from Brazil so he gets cold easily and this ninja mask makes him very happy. Thank you for the lovely compliments! The trick with the girly colors is one to keep in mind ;-)
