Most valuable thing I did while potty training my puppy was putting it to a cue. I use the cue "hurry up" and my dog will immediately do her business which is a lifesaver especially in those freezing winter months

I’ve had my puppy for 3 and 1/2 weeks so far and he’s perfect thanks to watching your puppy training videos. He’s 12 weeks old and knows sit, place, laydown, stay, walks on a leash really well, learning leave it and sleeps all night in his crate. Hasn’t had any accidents in his crate and hasn’t woken me up. I use the word “yes” and the clicker for training

My Aussie x Maremma took a bit of work to acclimatize to the crate, but I kept at it gently and she's really excellent in there now at 20 months (without bedding... she still wants to shred bedding, no matter what stuffed Kong/safe chew toy I put in there... but most of the time she curls up around the house she curls up on the linoleum floor so I'm not in the least concerned about the lack of a bed in the crate). From Day One after I brought her home at 8 weeks old, all her meals were fed in there, and every day multiple times a day we'd play a game where I'd tell her "get in your den!" and she'd go in there for a treat, dispensed at the very back of the crate (so she knew she was expected to not hover around the door). From Day One, I also worked on teaching her to not barge out the crate door when opened, by gently closing it "in he face" if she thought she could come out without being released. That's also how I taught her her release word ("ok"). She still didn't like being put in there at first (including at night, where I insisted she sleep for the first couple of months while I was ensuring she was house trained) and some nights she'd kick up a huge fuss (not letting up, with so much stress she'd end up shaking if I tried to let her "cry it out"). What ended up working for us was that I'd put her in there at her bedtime then I'd park myself in front of the crate with kibble. When she gave me a second of "quiet" I'd give her a kibble, then I'd count to 2 and give her another kibble (ie, before she started to fuss again) and rinse and repeat that for, like, 30 seconds... then I'd start counting to 3 before giving her a kibble and repeat that for 45 seconds... then I'd start counting to 4 before giving her a kibble... Eventually she'd fall asleep. A week-ish later, I'd start the evening with intervals of counting to 3 and working upwards and we might get up to intervals of counting to 15 before she drifted off. etc ... it took a solid 6 weeks of working that, unfortunately, before she was ok with going in there at night. It was a significant "sacrifice" of my own usual evening wind-down routine, and I wanted to scream and pull my hair out at how slowly I had to take it to keep making progress, but I knew I needed her to be able to chill in that crate. She mostly sleeps at my feet at night now, but she spends bits of every day in the crate (and still eats both meals every single day in there). I'm at home every day so it's mostly just 5 min here and 45min there for different reasons, but she's perfectly chill hanging out in there as long as is needed, like for example the few times I need to drive into the city and I'm away for 6hrs or something. SUPER glad I invested the time and care in crate training.

Love the new series! My 8 year old dog only spent her first year in a crate. After which she has never been it one again. If only this video existed when I was crate training her the experience would be much better for me and her! I’m planning to buy a new dog soon and I will definitely keep this in mind! Thank you Zak!

We adopted a 5 month old a week ago. She does really well with her crate. After 3 days she is sleeping in her crate on her own. She will lay in the crate on her own during the day. When it is time for bed, we just say "bed," and she goes right in.

We just got a puppy from the shelter who is 3-4 months old. We’ve had her for just over a week now. She came already crate trained and partially house trained. It’s been interesting to say the least. Some of it has been training ourselves to remember to take her out regularly as it has been many many years since my husband or I have dealt with a dog on a consistent basis and our kids never have. I am glad I found your channel. I wish I’d found it more than a week ago but it’s not too late to do things right. Thanks for the advice and support. 😊

We didn’t crate, but puppy didn’t want to sleep in bed cause it was so hot. But he’d have a bigger chance of waking us than he did on the floor. He had a pee pad by the door he used a few times, else had a couple accidents. But other than that it went ok. He was accident free at 9 weeks 3 days old. But I took him out extremely often during the day. And a time or two at night. I started relaxing about potty training when he was 6 months.

Dogs dont pee or poop where they sleep unless they are TERRIBLY anxious. If u wanna make sure they dont urinate in your bed just get up once around 2-3 am and let them out for a quick pee and maybe poop. It helped for me with my current cocker spaniel puppy.

You are among resources I used for crate training years ago. My dogs know and love their crates and routine. They tell me when it is time to put them to bed. They have their food in their kennels to help control feeding for one obese and one underweight dog. Kennels are used for bedtime, feeding and when they need a safe place from stress. We can leave the house without crating them and they are fine (our trash cans are dog proof). Crates are never punishment or unnecessary confinement. If I am out of bed, they are out of crate lol

The two puppies we raised we never crate trained. However, they slept in the utility room under a worktop on a bed. We put a mattress on the floor next to them and took it in turns to sleep there until they were well established in the house and house trained. It really didn’t take that long to work. I do regret not crate training though because one of the ‘puppies’ developed elbow issues in their senior years and had to be confined after surgery. He was a nightmare, not his fault, ours because of the lack of training.

Our puppy was crate trained and it is his safe space. He is now 18 months old. Whenever he needs some time out, or wants to sleep with no distractions, he goes directly to his crate. We feed him his dinner in his crate and he's learned that when we want him to go into his crate we lure him with food. So, at dinner time he happily eats his dinner with his back end outside of the crate.

Got a DDB at 4 months old with zero training other than crate training. He turned a year recently and has just now figured out toys are fun and tug and catch is pretty great too. Then 4 months of intense summer heat delayed training more. Cooler mornings are upon us and we are back at training outside the house.

My puppy was 8 weeks and exhausted his first night!! He slept through the night in a cozy cat carrier on a chair pushed right up to my bedside, so I could keep my hand in the carrier with him. Worked beautifully! Didn’t take long at all to keep moving him a little farther away at nighttime. May not have been so successful at 14 weeks!

The first night with our standard poodle pup was eventful. She tore up the canvas travel crate we had her in so I had to go climb up in our attic at 3 AM to get an old wire crate we hadn't used in years. It had to be held together with bungie cords. I placed an overnight order at Amazon for a new, large, crate right then. She's still using it and loves it as her "bedroom".

We were so fortunate with our puppy. She slept through the night in her crate at 12 weeks. She had to sleep in the crate because of our elderly cat. She still sleeps in her crate at 10 months old. The crate was the easiest thing with this high energy pup and we're still working on other issues but she's doing great. Patience is key!

My dog didn't like his crate. He would wake us up early in the morning to get out of there. He hardly ever went in there during the day, except to drink or get the treats/toys I would put in there for him to make the crate 'enjoyable'. It was never the place he voluntarily settled. He is visibly happier to just be 'free' at night and he doesn't get himself into trouble. I am happy we used it when he was a puppy. He was very young when we got him and it wouldn't have been safe to leave him to roam about. We got the biggest crate we could to give him space, but we stopped putting him in the crate for the night when he wasn't even 6 months old. If it would have become his safe space, I would have gladly kept the crate around. But now I am kind of happy to get rid of that giant thing, haha!

This really is not the way to do crate training. The session started with a dog that was happy and curious to explore the cage and ended with a dog which was cautious if not fearful. A better way is to feed the dog in the cage - initially with the door open and any other dogs in the house in another room. Put the food in the cage and let them get on with it. Do not constantly try to interact with the dog throwing treats around. If you have other dogs, after a couple of meals with pup fed in the cage on its own feed the pup with the other dogs in the room but shut the door to keep the other dogs away. This will reinforce the feeling that the cage is a place of refuge not confinement but you must let the pup out as soon as it has finished. Make sure that the cage contains the most comfortable bed in the room so that when tired it is the most attractive place for the pup to sleep when it needs to rest during the day. When it is used to using the bed in the cage then start to close the door for short periods when the pup is sleeping. One other point from someone who has had dogs for many years: think carefully before allowing your dog to sleep in your room if it is upstairs. Sadly eventually you will reach a point where your dog is no longer able to climb the stairs and then you have a stark choice - either sleep downstairs with the dog or leave it to feel abandoned at probably the most vulnerable phase of its life.

I got the snuggle puppy so everything was ready when River came home, he slept through the first night in his crate but as he got older he started not to like it so now he just sleeps in bed with me, he was almost fully potty trained when he was 10 months old, i worked really hard on that and it paid off, he has always woken me up when he needs to go and does not chew on furniture so i can leave him home alone just fine, he is 3 now :)

I figured out that once dogs sleep outside, offering them a kennel indoors which is more comfortable and warm with a frozen meat bone recives few complaints. Houstraining was easier after that lesson. The female I tried it on didn't think the same though, so it's not for every dog as he said.

I used a crate for my young puppy but only at night and it was right next to my bed, on top of the chest of drawers so she could see and hear me all night long. In fact, she was so close to me inside her crate that she could probably feel my breath on her fur as I slept if she sat at the bars. I NEVER put my puppy in a crate and left the house. If I wanted to confine the pup to a small area for her own safety I'd use baby safety gates. We ditched the crate completely by 6 months as it was no longer useful or necessary. The puppy was sleeping on the floor in a fluffy bed by my bed every night without issue.

Both my dogs I got as pups and are successfully house trained. They just took individualized routes there. First night with my now older dog as a puppy, she slept in my bed with a harness and leash. I borrowed a kitty kennel to have next to my bed if she was interrupting my sleep. I took her out once. Most nights I didn’t take her out. She is a larger breed. My second puppy is a smaller breed and an entirely different game. I had her in a kennel right next to my bed and for weeks had to take her out throughout the night. She had accidents if I didn’t whenever she started to whine. I tried having her in the bed but it was too much because she wouldn’t settle. I eventually set her up with a fake grass pad in a pen because the constant sleep interruptions were affecting my job performance. After a couple months we transitioned to just a kennel and she did well. So glad she’s almost 1!

Guess we are super lucky as last week, we brought home, 2 - 12 week old, Australian Shepherds, and put them in a large crate together the first night at 9 pm... They didn't make a peep til 6:30 am for 4 nights, and today, 7:30 am. They do get lots of play time outside as we have 100 acres with lots of interesting things to smell, and do... As we are retired, they will be with us most of the time so have to work on barking, biting, walking on a leash, and jumping up, combined with complete potty training, but so far they love sleeping together in the crate... Best babies ever! Maybe will pay for this later on but no complaints so far!

She’s quite well behaved and still walks with her tail between her legs though. She follows behind pretty much anyone who’s around and whimpers. I do feed her. What should I do? She won’t let me pet her and jumps back if I try.I thought about getting her a chew toy but she hasn’t chewed through anything yet so I’m not sure if I’ll be introducing a bad habit since I don’t know if she’s trained and I don’t know how to train. But I’d be very uncomfortable letting the puppy roam free in our bedroom with wall-to-wall carpet everywhere. I’d love to know what to do in a scenario that doesn’t go as well as this one did.

Our most recent addition joined us at 8 months old and was completely anxiety ridden. She was afraid of the kennel, only peed twice per day and only when we weren't able to see her. It seemed like she was abused and not socialized at all as a baby. We have added some anti anxiety meds and gotten professional one on one training. She is now comfortable with us unless someone moves to pet her too quickly. Our older dog has helped with her anxiety levels too allowing her to timidly sniff people who come into our house, but we call it a win. She still doesn't like to pee or poo in front of us even outside. With my husband, she will now walk a half block. He then has to walk back and forth in front of our house to get her to go potty. He is the most successful at getting her to potty outside. She is our 4th dog. One was confident, the other two nervous. But we've never encountered the anxiety level where meds were necessary. Plus, they were all potty trained but 6 month old.

The crate was not over sized. You buy the crate for the size the dog will be be full grown. It's a Corso a XXL crate will be needed. Not all dogs are cut out for crate training???? Wtf I'm taking all bets in a year or two this dog will have problems 😅😅😅😅😅. 130lb dog on a HARNESS 😅😅 that might not be crate trained as a puppy. Good luck Zak A dog bred for protection should not be on harness. Power breeds on harness spells disaster. I sooo want to see this dog in 8 months!!!!! Please update regularly 😂😂😂😂

You rewarded his anxiety by letting him out as soon as he started acting anxious. I would have given him a higher reward treat than kibble while in the crate. He would have settled down. Then he’d also learn when he’s anxious about something new, he’s going to get a piece of cheese. He’ll want to stay in that crate after that. Cane corsos are smart and they aren’t very forgiving. You have to be the leader and let him know you are going to be making the decisions and he doesn’t need to worry as long as he’s with you. The minute you give him what HE wants if it’s in opposition of what YOU want, he’s going to take advantage of that. And he will remember. See how he didn’t go into the crate after that? Because he knew you wouldn’t make him. You let his anxiety make the decision. You weren’t in charge in that moment, he was.

Hello.... I just came across your video with the new pup ! And wonderful surprise .... Training tips as well , when I followed it to your site ! Two good hits in one day !! Hooray !! It's been a very long time since I had a dog my last was with us for seven years , part of the Family. Unfortunately after a move , we put her in the back yard. But I was not aware our three year old grand daughter was out running about with her other family children , she had gone in the back , then back and forth ..our dog was also curious about the new area. She went exploring as well , there was an accident..I didn't know how badly she was hurt ??? She seemed her same ol self. But to be safe. I took her to the vet ( new vet!) She did have a little bit of bloodshot in one eye. Just a bit ...... They right away said she had brain damage. !!?? ! I was in shock !? How she was same ol girl happy looking around .. suddenly one person stepped up and put a muzzle on her !!! Then I was TOLD , THEY WERE GOING TO PUT HER DOWN, AND DID IT ! AS FAST AS THAT ,! I FEEL APART !!!SHE WAS LIKE ONE OF MY BABIES. !! I LOST IT ! I GUESS IT WAS GOOD THE OFFICE WAS CLOSING. NO ONE TO HEAR ME SCREAMING ... That was thirty some years ago. I had a cat for several years ...she found us !she was not well but she was with us for many years before she passed as well , she had feline Leukemia ! My husband talks about getting another dog ...like our last ( she was a mix Malamute I forget the other) she was a personality! Beautiful , SMART , SASSY , I just don't want to go through anything like that ever again..I feel like I lost my own child ... Even after all this time , Oh Im so sorry this long thing ... Maybe , maybe. I don't know .

My dog (almost 3) loves his crate because we trained him with your methods. He sees it as his bedroom and goes in willingly multiple times a day with the door open just to relax or chew. He does have a special Super Chewer toy and special treats that he only uses in his crate. All we have to do is say “Bedtime biscuits?” and he runs in and lays down. Even though he goes in without them, we continue to give him 3 small biscuits at bedtime as just a nice little snack. It’s become a cute little ritual for us and one of the few areas we’ve chosen not to phase out treats because…who doesn’t love a bedtime snack?! 😂

Hi Zak and Bree. Zak, When you say I have 2 weeks to get this dog trained. Is that even realistic? I mean what are you saying actually? I used to train dogs many many years ago. I couldn't train a dog in 2 weeks no matter what. I mean I could train it maybe a couple of things what have you, but I don't know what you mean when you say I have 2 weeks to get this dog trained. The other difficult part of your series is the confusion of day one, day 2 and on. Because last week was day 1. So sometimes I wish you could explain to us what do you mean by what day it is. That would be very helpful. Because I don't know about anybody else but I love your videos and learning, however I get very confused on what's happening, because this is supposedly a dog on day one. But it was day one last week so therefore again I don't know really what's going on. What a beautiful dog and although this is not important the harness looks like it's from ruff wear and that orange on his beautiful grey color is so outstanding. thank you see you next week

It's very frustrating when you ask a few questions and a creator answers one of them but you don't know which one. And there isn't any thought put into the answer. What I think you're addressing here Is when you say I have 2 weeks to train this dog. If that is so you have never said, I am laying a foundation only. Why don't you say that in the video? And if you're going to answer me please look at the other questions I'm sincerely asking you. And then I get an answer like that. Whatever

We have an extremely aggressive American bully, we have had many trainers who have given up half way through saying “there’s nothing I can do for you” we’ve reached out to boarding/training facilities and no one will take him. He has an extreme overbite which makes fitting a muzzle impossible and he is redirecting his aggression out on my and my husband and I have had many large bites (none requiring a hospital) but he can do a lot of damage and we don’t know what to do… he will DEFINITELY get put down if we give him to a shelter. I’m begging for help because no one wants to help!!!

This is a joke. Zak George always talks about the science of dog training. Things like certification, accreditation, and the need for the government to control the dog training industry. How did he ever get 3.69 million gullible subscribers to this channel anyway? I assume everyone should know the "certification" that Zak George has was a few weeks of a dog training course from PetSmart? FYI, PetSmart is a chain of pet stores that offer pet products, pet food, accessories, and also have some animals, including dogs, for sale. PetSmart training courses do not have any validity anywhere.

@@ryans9029 The crucial thing is that the people got good advice. I am not a trainer but I was brought a GSD who needed a home. He had escaped and the person who found him discovered that he came from an army family and they were being sent abroad so they were going to have the dog euthanised. She couldn’t keep him because her dog didn’t like him so she brought him to me. The first time that I walked him I was with my young son and luckily I had him on a leash because my son saw a friend of his and jokingly pointed to his friend and said “Kill!” and the dog went crazy. He had been taught this “fun game” by his previous family. And you might be surprised how many teenagers see a GSD and point to someone and say Kill! My son has the scars. First I bought the dog a muzzle. He was also inclined to attack women because he was afraid that they would take him away from me so the muzzle got a lot of use as a visible sign that people should give the dog a wide berth. When he lost his temper I would hold him and soothe him until the red glow went out of his eyes. There is no way that anyone could have “fixed” that dog in a week, never mind a day! The end of the story is that I kept him for the rest of his life and I have never loved a dog more. He did become good and became able to make friends with strange women.

Bruh... 😂😂 Completely making up the treats to bribe peeing and pooping. Gtfoh. You completely missed the reward for the actual peeing. Dig sleeping in bed with a harness. Shutting the door on a kennel on the first session. All mistakes. Amateur hour x10
@zakgeorge
@zakgeorge 7 ай бұрын
All very good points! Thanks for your insights! I appreciate the feedback. The harness was actually a strategic choice for Shade, as he had a tendency to pee unexpectedly-having the harness on helped guide him during those initial hours. Regarding rewards for potty actions, the scientific consensus isn’t definitive, but it’s a point well-taken. As for the kennel door, you’re correct that it momentarily backfired. Stay tuned to see how we navigated that challenge.
