Play pens are so important and something I see a lot of my friends NOT use when they get a new pup (although I keep my advice to myself unless they ask). I kept my Lab in a play pen his first few months and let him earn his run of the house slowly. Whenever he was out of the play pen during those first few months, he was 100% supervised. Doing this helped keep him from getting into things and being destructive. For his entire life, he never destroyed a single thing in the house (he passed away a couple of years ago). Most people I know get a dog and just let them loose in the house to explore and do whatever they want....and that's what the dog does. Whatever he wants -- which YOU don't want. I'm picking up a mini Bernedoodle in a week and plan on raising him the same way.

Rachel is freakin awesome and amazing!!! I bought a 10 week old puppy last week. Today was my first day off with it, meaning a full day to work with it. I’ve done exactly as you mentioned, take it out every 1-2 hours. After a week of frustration, with it doing it’s business anywhere and everywhere around the apartment, yet the moment I take it outside….nothing. Today with me keeping on top of it all day, it’s gone on it’s own….outside all three times. The third time was a bit of a struggle. I figured we’d go inside and try it again in 15 minutes. It started sniffing the carpet, going around in circles, and I immediately remembered you mentioning that when looking for signals. I took her outside, and we are now three for three for the day, no inside accidents so far today.

She was starving and so dehydrated that she was struggling to even stand up. We really weren't planning on keeping her but she quickly stole our hearts. This is absolutely brilliant. Our first dog (who is now a grandpa dog!) was trained by being locked in a bathroom with puppy pads by his original owner. He would look for any rug in the house (because it looked like a puppy pad to him, poor guy) to potty on. When we adopted him, our only goal was “potty outside.” Puppy pads were not an option, so we did this very method you’re showing in this video and it worked! Now, years later, we’ve introduced a new puppy and I’m like, ehhh, maybe we should just do the hard-core week of taking this new doggo outside every two hours like we did with our older dog. People have been calling me nuts, and telling me to be lazier and use puppy pads, so I’m SO GLAD I found your video! I’m doing it this way. It’s a week of my life and the rest of my dogs life, so totally worth it. Thank you!

This is the perfect video for me. My pup is 9 weeks and looks exactly like yours. Crate training is going great. I set alarms to take him out at 11 pm, 1:30 am, 4 am, and 6 am. However, during the day I take him out at least every hour, but he'll still have an occasional accident during playtime. He's easily distracted, even when I have treats, and tries to eat everything on the ground. No way I can have him off leash when outside. In the house he'll leave everything. Outside he'll eat everything.

Yeah my chihuahua puppies don’t like that, plus they will want to sleep with me if I wake them up in the middle of the night... the night time barking is a pain. I have had them for 2weeks now. They are currently 10weeks old and do really well with sleeping and not making mistakes throughout the night. I put them down at 12am (walk before bed) and wake them up at 6am (walk in the morning). It’s been really hard trying to work and potty train them throughout the day. My major problem is with the fact that they are not leash trained yet, because every leash that I buy is waaay too big even the smallest of them all. So I’m current looking to custom make one for each of them. They are going to give me hell I know it 😂

This video helped me a lot with my new puppy.. they only thing I didn’t like was “it’s your fault if your puppy has an accident in the house”... not only are puppies adjusting to a new environment but new puppy owners are adjusting as well. Puppies are ALOT of work. I have 3 children & I think my new puppy is way more stressful. I can take him out to potty & he will still come inside & have an accident. & don’t forget the “puppy blues” a lot of owners go thru. Good luck to the new puppy owners I heard it gets easier😅😅
@nicolekrajniak97272 жыл бұрын
well it’s your fault if the puppy has an accident, but it’s normal to make faults and to not be perfect. There was literally no judgment within the comment. Maybe you’re a perfectionist but it’s really not bad to make a mistake or something not being perfect :)
@mamadeborah1999 Жыл бұрын
Nique I agree with you. Saying it's owners fault is not productive. That's why we call them accidents. Unexpected situations we cannot always control. No one can follow a puppy around 24/7 and watch perfectly their every move. It's a learning process for both owner and puppy. Just do your best and hopefully puppy will catch on!

I watched this right before we got our puppy a few weeks ago and I can comfortably say that he is house trained at 8 almost 9 weeks now in just under a week. We incorporated a hanging bell and he knows to run over and hit it with his nose anytime he needs to go out. And he has only had 1 or 2 crate pee accidents (both my fault) since we got him. He whines when he needs to go out during the night and we’ve got it down to only 1 time a night he needs to be let out. We are currently working the puppy biting using the technique in her other video which also seems to be having a positive affect! Thanks!!

Great video…. He’s a very smart boy
@justinrice11716 ай бұрын
@tim.m2I work from home which helped so all I did was shut the door with him in my office and just monitored him…. The moment his nose went down I grabbed him and would grab his paw and use it to paw the door quick before letting him out of my office and into the yard…. If he attempted to pee a bit or was mid pee I’d pick him up and again repeat the process…. The key is to not let any accidents happen which will expedite everything….. eventually I transitioned him onto the bell
@justinrice11715 ай бұрын
@tim.m2 you just have to be on top of it with no mistakes.... You just watch the dog like a hawk and the moment their head goes down to sniff you bring them outside... If they start to pee inside you just grab them and bring them outside to finish.... Just need to be very aware and on the ball... I work from home so I just locked him in the office with me and had him trained in no time. If a mistake happens, clean it very thoroughly so the smell of pee is gone so they dont think it's okay. Thats the best advice I can give.... Eventually I transitioned to using his paw to scratch the door before I bring him outside and eventually he just started scratching the door whenever he wanted to go out.

Hi Rachel, I don't know if you pick up on new comments from your old videos but I had to tell you what an amazing success we have had with your advice. We picked up our new 8 week old Newfypoo puppy and made sure to take him outside every hour from when he got home to midnight and then every 3 hours. He went potty from the first hour and every time after that! He picked up on the route from the front room to the back door and by the afternoon of day 2 he was asking to go out!! We have had no accidents or puppy pads in the house since he arrived. He's a real smart kid from his parents but I think its your recommendation plus our consistency that has pulled it together. We are binge watching ALL your advice on EVERYTHING puppy and would recommend this approach to every new puppy parent. Thank you xx

This changed my life!!! We just adopted an 11 week old bernedoodle (I guess she's almost 12 weeks old now) last week. She was peeing literally every 5 min not emptying her bladder fully each time. She would go pee outside, but once inside she would pee again minutes later. We added a bell lanyard (we also have a doorbell that our other dog uses). Between letting the pup out every 10 minutes and looking to see if she was sniffing around, we stopped her from going potty in the house, she's pretty much potty trained in under 6 days! she also she uses the doorbell andor bell jingle!! thank you rachel!!!

My puppy is 5 months old. We’ve had him a week and he’ll go on the puppy pad (mostly) but I can’t seem to get him to go pee (or poop) outside except for first thing in the morning. He will be outside for 15-30 minutes and when I feel he’s not gonna go, bring him in. I then hawk-eye him knowing he’s about to go and I must drift off or something because he always finds a way to go! It’s very frustrating. We have been very fortunate with our 12 week old rat terrier. We've had her for 2 weeks and she came from an Amish family who apparently was already working on housebreaking. Bella only pottied in the house the first day, TWICE right at the back door. We just opened the door and said outside and she has not gone inside since. She goes out before bedtime around 10 pm and once around 3-4 in the morning. She starts to whine in the kennel to let us know she needs to go! We're realistic and know she may still have accidents etc so we're prepared and just use positive reinforcements. She has also learned sit, stay, drop (to drop something she isn't supposed to have) and stay! "Come" has been a bit more difficult. She has SO MUCH energy! But she hit's it more than she misses! We really are blessed. We love your channel and will continue to use your advice and techniques.

But for some I totally understand this is an necessity. I take my 6 week old out three to four times during the night and continuously throughout the day, although impossible if you're not working from home. Hardly any sleep for a couple of weeks but in the long run it will pay off. Total dedication and continuity required which for some ould prove to be impossible, but if you can do it, definitely worth the effort. Very patient with him, too, as they are only babies, so accidents will happen. He sleeps in my bed, (bad practise perhaps but it works for us) and yet to have a wet bed! ❤

We've had our 9 week old puppy for 6 days now (almost 1 week), following all your instructions. My husband and I set alarms through the night for 2.5 hours and we take it in turns taking him out. He has no accidents through the night, but within the first hour of being awake, he does at least 1 - 2 wees outside then tries to wee at least 2-4 more times inside. How can he hold it for 2.5 hours through the night, then need to go multiple times within an hour in the morning? I've lost so much work time this week trying to work from home, I've spent no time alone with my kids, and one person in the family is always on dog duty watching him and missing out. So far, we’re 6 days in and it's exactly like day 1 when we brought him home. What are we doing wrong that we haven't been able to train him like you said in one week?

maybe you should wait outside with him a little, puppies sometimes don't know how to empty out completely

A puppy at rest can hold it much longer than a puppy at play, when they are running around playing and sprinting and drinking they are shaking everything up inside and that makes them need to go more frequently!
@loriwoo84082 жыл бұрын
If he can smell where he has gone before he'll mark it again. Clean the spots each time with vinegar and water or something from pet store so he can't smell there. That is why I think puppy pads help the process if you can't time their peeing each time. It has that smell they want and Willmar there and not your floor or carpet.
@loriwoo84082 жыл бұрын
The training process is for them to learn to hold it and go outside so you can praise them when they do. It doesn't hurt to get them to run around outside to further stimulate their need to go....usually soon. Many people walk their dogs several times a day and that is when they go because it stimulates the need to go.
@loriwoo84082 жыл бұрын
