You might have convinced me to move my compressor to earlier in the chain. I use more of a limiter style compression so it's subtler and where I have it in my chain it offers a convenient "volume adjustment" Utility because it reigns in some of the fuzz and octave and envelope madness that is before it, but it's not capping my main overdrives it delays in any weird way. It can be a clean boost or an underdrive- I'm often turning it off for big loud moments but usually running it on as a foundation or leveling of sorts before it hits my drive and delay or verbs. I usually land on a keeley bassist or GC2, also it's expensive but the Becos offerings are very solid. The best compressor in total I've found is probably the accountant by Fairfield - it somehow just does everything you'd want and even has a sort of grit or grain in its sound that makes those littler notes and strings sound fatter but also kinda glued them together. I would happily go back to that even if I set it as a Limiter. Playing a compressor at home you might just get frustrated by it but during gigs I've found they can really do a lot once you set em right and are willing to adjust playing technique a little bit. Anything, good or bad, you can usually get used to and learn to use it to your advantage or mitigate its shortfalls.. be willing to take some time. Walrus deep six was my first and it kicked ass.

Indeed! There are some great options out there and experimenting on placement is a great way to determine how you want to use it. There’s also nothing wrong with having more than one compressor either! Different placements are cause for different purposes!

Great podcast! Stumbled onto this yesterday and really enjoyed listening to all of your episodes. Looking forward to the next installment! Also, we seem to favor the same kind of compressor sound (not overly squishy, with a blend control.) So I would highly recommend two, the Wampler Ego 76 (his take on the 1176.) And the Jackson Audio Blossom. Which is a really subtle optical compressor. Anyways, cheers! Catch you next time.

Thanks for the kind words! We’re so glad you found us!!! Definitely will look at the Wampler and the Jackson…although I’m probably more intrigued by the Jackson Bloom. Always seemed like a neat approach! Episodes drop on Wednesdays so we’ll see you again real soon!

@@thepedalcollaborative I have yet to get one myself but seems to have good options without being too much if you don't want it to be. I was hoping you had! Haha
