At my gym at the rate I’m going it’s going to take 40 years to get a black belt. I’ve been training there for 10 years, starting as a 3 stripe white belt. I’m now a 3 stripe blue belt. I train three times a week and have never taken any serious time off. I think I’m just really bad at this sport and I may have capped out my skill level. The lack of promotions has absolutely destroyed my self esteem while I’m constantly being told belts don’t mean anything. Now I tend to just go to open mats for a bit of exercise and to occasionally feel like a ninja. That’s the best I can do.

If you're having fun, just keep working hard and good things will come. The art really is so much bigger than a belt. I know that could be discouraging to hear, but this journey has made you a better version of yourself over the past 10 years. Keep pushing.

Man, 10 years? Any way you can find someone to drill with at home to figure things out?
