I struggle with the concept of transference as being subconscious. The prospective father in law looks like the sergeant major? That is surely in your face obvious, not subconscious. It’s not subtle, I just don’t get it.

Great question Christian. In this example, The feelings arose well before the conscious link was made to him being "like the Sargent Major". Once the conscious link is made then the transference is no longer subconscious.
