I was in favor of Tua playing on 5th year option, mainly for injury concerns, but I also don’t have a problem with signing him now. This team is built to win now. Who are the Dolphins realistically getting that would be better than Tua in the next few years, especially in this system? There’s none.
@ericstorm52852 ай бұрын
Tua might be the 12th best QB because he gives u nothing in the run game, but he is a top 3 passer in the NFL by every metric (completion %, yards per pass, air yards per pass, TD/Int ratio and QB passer rating). Guys like Josh Allen, Lamar, Hurts, etc don’t come to being half as good as Tua as far as throwing the football. I’d rather have an elite pocket passer like Tua than a scrambler like Lamar or Josh who can’t throw the ball as well.
@c2jones2 ай бұрын
@ericstorm5285 I think there is reasonable pushback on this that cannot be glossed over. While his overall passer rating in 2023 was 101.1, the number went dramatically down to 67.8 when trailing with under four minutes left in games. And that's because in these situations, the team is forced to pass, without many running alternatives, which also limits RPOs and playaction opportunities. These are more "true dropback" situations. Tua had the worst passer rating among quarterbacks who faced the eventual champion Chiefs in the playoffs. And the Dolphins had the worst scoring outcome. It's not just a one-game problem. When Tagovailoa has to put the team on his back in key games, particularly down the stretch of the season, and produce as a leading passer, he tends to struggle. Tua didn't receive a single MVP vote and he was not an All-Pro quarterback. And evaluating QB Elo Value, his trajectory is in fact, the last among the five top quarterbacks taken in the 2020 draft - and well below Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts. Last year, Tua Tagovailoa was fourth in EPA/play, which is for the most part a collective efficiency stat. However, he fell all the way to 13th in air yards. He was 15th in intended air yards per attempt, at 7.7. That combination of factors means that the Dolphins' receivers generated a lot of the total production after the catch (5.6 yards after the catch per completion). While his protection is far from good, the reality is that Tua's time to throw was 2.36-seconds. Mahomes' average time to throw was 2.84 seconds. The NFL average was 2.65 seconds. That miniscule difference of .29th of a second cannot logically be used as the reason why Tua struggled late in games (particularly big games) down the stretch. When he was forced to hang onto the ball longer than 2.5 seconds, his QBR dropped to 43.2 and his completion percentage dipped to 58.8%. As a result, 9 of his 14 interceptions last season came on passes of that nature. He was off-target on 21.2% of his throws outside the pocket, which ranked middle-of-the-pack among NFL quarterbacks. The Chiefs led the NFL in dropped passes. The Dolphins now have the highest-paid QB and receiver trio in NFL history. Mahomes is the only QB in the current era to have great success in his second contract where the QB takes up the bulk of the salary. Tua will have to elevate others vs each position needing to elevate him. Tua threw a career-high 14 interceptions in 2023. He threw multiple interceptions in four games, also a career-high. He threw very ill-advised two pick-sixes, to go along with 13 fumbles, five of which were lost. He was not necessarily under duress in all those instances. In his own words, he admits that he needs to take better care of the ball. Finally, on the running element, there is a reason they want Tua to slim down and start running the ball. Otherwise, the defense can just target him, unlike what they can for most NFL QBs. Last season, he was the worst quarterback in the entire NFL in run grade (28.5), according to PFF. Tua is the only quarterback with a run grade below 40, and it's below 30. You don't need to be a Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen type of runner to succeed in the NFL, but some kind of ability to create extra yards with your legs is important, and the lack of this talent limits Tua's ceiling and ability to exploit defenses. He is expected to add this feature back to his game this year. All that said, the Dolphins will unseat the Bills for the Division title. They're past due. Should have done it last year. The Bills were 6-6 and the Dolphins were 9-3, yet (two years in a row), they crumbled down the stretch. People forget that the Dolphins swept everyone else in the Division besides the Bills who swept the Dolphins. While the Bills swept the Dolphins, they split with the Jets and Patriots. But the Dolphins clearly have more talent this year. McDaniel will take things into his own hands with a dynamic running game and passing game and a better overall roster and scheme on defense.
@ofilioarguello942 ай бұрын
As long as Tua stays healthy, he could easily be considered a better QB by the end of his career.
@c2jones2 ай бұрын
@ofilioarguello94 He had better be "considered a better" QB by the end of his career. If he doesn't have a huge season and push through his challenges this year, the Dolphins have an exit strategy from him by next March.

Great show as always gents, my opinion on why the Bills always beat us is that it's simply line play. Yes they clog up the lanes, and try to slow down everyone knowing they won't always be able to reach Tua, but they bully us on both sides of the ball in the trenches, and until we can match up with them, and have an OL and DL that can dictate some of the flow of the game, we will continue to struggle against them.
@ccombs26662 ай бұрын
In talking about the cap savings you don’t mention the savings this year or the fact that by rolling it overit reduces the impact for next year as well. That money reduces his footprint on the cap
@Guy1172 ай бұрын
The key to success for the Dolphins as with any good offense is the o-line. Everyone knows that games are won and lost in the trenches. The starting o-line last season when healthy was one of the better o-lines that Miami has had in a long time. Not many would argue that the team would have won the division and have gotten deeper in the playoffs if the o-line stayed healthy OR had better depth. Austin Jackson was the only starter to play 9 or more games. McDaniel was forced to scheme his offense around the deficiencies of the o-line.

Tua was without Mosert and waddle b6 the time that game was play, and Miami didn't have much talent after the 4 guys we have. There was no Jonnu Smith or anyone at the OBJ level on the field Tua played a little bit better in 2022 because he had wr's Gesicki, Sheirfeild, are more talented receivers than what Berrios and Wilson provided. Craycraft was never the same after his shoulder injury in the Denver game. And besides, he's just a guy anyway. Plus, Hill is dropping 9 of his 22 passes in games vs. good teams, doesn't help either. You keep leaving out Miami play 2 good defense without two of their top 2 player in Mosert and Waddle. If tgey have those 2 or a Gesicki and a Sherfield, they win that game vs. Buffalo because they were right there until they had a return for a TD on a kick off whwre Good blew out his knee in the hold the wr the pint returner ran through to get back into the game. If I can remember this, I know you can. I know buffallo was beat up to, but so were we. It's not like the game was not competitive it's that if our playmakers are taken away via goid defenses or are out due to injury, we have no plan be which is to be more physical. Hopefully, with Ezukanma beung Healthy and TE'S Smith and Jordy Fortson Jr. Plus, I'm using more RB Brooks and adding, say, another O linman to help run block when the weather gets inclement. This could help us be more physical.

This is just another bad move by Chris Grier. I am not sure how he has kept his job. Ross is a great businessman but a terrible owner. Chris Grier has a history of poor drafting and he either reaches on his pics or just flat out drafts the wrong guy. Anyone with any common sense in football that's not enamored with tuas stats against losing teams, knows that Tua was the wrong pick. Reach in. He was falsely compared to Drew Brees and he's more like a less talented, smaller, weaker armed, and less of a leader than Alex Smith. Chris Spears refusal to draft and develop quarterbacks forced us to extend tua and now we are stuck with him. He is a system quarterback that plays scared most games. Defenses adjusted to the dolphins during the second half of last season and this upcoming season, other than the Patriots, the dolphins are not playing any slouches. The last six games look like they're going to be straight losses due to the cold weather and where they are being played. The dolphins are not going to surpass the bills and they may finish behind the Jets going third in the vision. Going by the schedule, they may win seven to eight games and it's statistically impossible for Tua to Play all 17 games for two seasons in a row. This extension was a bad move and refusing to draft other quarterbacks and develop them was an even worse mistake. The best franchise is consistently draft quarterbacks even if they have a franchise quarterback. Even Green Bay drafted another quarterback this past season and they have Jordan love already. Pittsburgh, Baltimore, San Francisco, and Green Bay are all consistent winners and they always have backup quarterbacks developing. The Miami dolphins have a terrible general manager that should have lost his job, but for some reason he's allowed to stay on and maintain a consistently disappointing team. Hey samantha! Things are going to look even worse because Jordan love. Looks like he's a franchise quarterback and now that Herbert has a coach in Harbaugh, the chargers are going to be lighting it up and the dolphins chose a quarterback that should be a backup. Next season, the dolphins go into salary, cap, hell and all these trades that Grier's made and all these poor draft choices are going to really be showing. After that happens, tool will have to lead the team and he's proven over and over and over that he is not capable of carrying the team and needs to be lifted by everyone around him. The dolphins are screwed for the next four to five seasons. Grier needs to go
