I usually limit the amount of time my Borzoi and my Silken Windhound go out during the summer nothing over 10 minutes or less in the backyard. However, I will take them out on longer walking trips in the winter, fall and early spring.

Yeah I got a Borzoi in a hot weather city and I do my best so he can stay comfortable, he is always on the AC actually haha. I wanted to ask I you have talked about prey drive? Bolche my 10th month borzoi puppy is starting to go crazy on every small moving thing from dogs, bugs, birds, cats, and now kids! It's hard to control when he is in that state so I have to be tougher on the training.

Ora went through a crazy phase like that too, we stayed on top of "redirecting" her, and once she got her curiosity out of her system she calmed down. You might find that sort of thing goes away when/if you neuter your man as well.

Can you talk about introducing more dogs to your pack? I’m getting a single female borzoi soon, and her breeder states she’s an independent, dominant female. My goal is to eventually adopt greyhounds and make a pack, but I’ve never had more than one dog 🥲

That's a great question! When I was growing up we had 4-5 borzois / greyhounds / Scottish deerhounds at a time. We never had trouble acclimating a new dog to our "pack," but sometimes it was done slowly - the dogs would meet on a leash, then be in the same area while we watched to see how they interacted. My parents would feed the dogs together to see if there was any weird resource aggression. Mind you, I am SURE a professional dog trainer has some better advice on this, but I want to stick to just purely empirical. We never had an incidents - I feel like all noodle dogs understand each other. The other issue is that borzois are extremely sensitive, and if you get a new dog it really shakes up their routine. This happened with Esper when we got Ora - Ora was getting all the attention and we failed to see that Esper was getting sad and feeling displaced. That's something we really wished we would have thought of - everything is fine now, but the first few months were tough for her.

@@esperborzoi Thank you for the reply! That's a good note on supervising outside of the household first. I hope with an adoption agency, we can do several meet and greets and match her with the perfect partner. How did y'all show esper that she was still loved even when Ora came around? Did she just adjust overtime, or did you change your routine to give her more attention after noticing she was depressed?

@@TheAutumWind once we noticed Esper being depressed we changed our behavior and made sure to include her in all of Oras training - she pretended to hate it haha

Hi - good timing as we're now in spring and here our summers get toasted! Do you know if your pooches like to swim? Arlo has waded chest deep so far and that's in winter. My last doggy would swim and we spent most of the summer at the river. I'm planning to walk Arlo in the cooler mornings during our summer. Cheers from Australia!!!
