My father negotiated with the tribal people to help him with elephants to cut large trees and have elephants to place the cut trees to create a roadway. My mother and grandmother would enter trenches when the Japanese bombers would circle overhead then drop their bombs. One of the highway from Chittagong to Bandar ban was the work of my father. At 15:56, it is not correct to say the Hambantota port fell into Chinese ownership. It was actually leased by a Chinese company for 99 years to manage and it shared its profits with Sri Lanka. The company even gave 1.15 billion dollars to Sri Lanka to pay off its debts to the other foreign lenders who owned 90% of SLanka's debts. The port is also unsuitable as a naval base as its mouth is too narrow to allow more than one vessel to come and go at the same time.

Thank you Wion, for this excellent and very informative series; I would say that Xi Jinping's China is not the only surviving communist superpower, rather it is the world's first communist superpower. Surely all previous so called superpowers have been capitalist imperialist. This distinction helps us to better understand the inevitable geopolitical tension that we now have between the last of the capitalist imperialist empires (the U.S.A.) and the first communist empire.

@@moozillamoo2109 whatever you or I or any observer wants to call it, the government of China names itself as communist and any formal international body has to recognise it as such. USSR was a communist superpower, maybe not for its entire existence but at least for a while. Mostly because of nukes and a massive military. We have yet to see China's military in true action.. They have better equipment than Russia but no combat experience, and the west still has much better equipment than China. For all we know they could be a paper tiger like Russia. Dictatorships benefit a lot from bluffing and appearing strong. USA doesn't need to bluff, in fact the world underestimates it, USA military technology is scary as hell. And other NATO partners are nothing to sneeze at either, especially the UK and France, but even other NATO partners have great training and quality equipment despite their small armies. The US Navy Pacific fleet alone + some marines could be enough to neutralize the Chinese military if nukes are not involved. Aircraft carriers are vital for power projection and China only has 1 I believe? Meanwhile USA has 10+? USA has its flaws but I''d rather have them as a leading world power than China. China is straight up scary for literally every other country. They have no allies, only frenemies.

No term limit means leading for life for all English-speaking and European people somehow. Even India also has no term limit for the president position. There are quite a few nations that have no term limit, but none were described as terms for life. Isn't it strange for democratic nations that claim equality but are somehow ok to single out China?

China is a totalitarian one-party state which means they control every fucking facet of chinese life and every person of any means have to be a member of that party. Democracy doesn't just mean you hold an election it means that there is an option to those in power an opposition. That opposition has the vital function of pointing out what the current leaders are doing wrong and what can be done better.
China is lucky to have wise and dedicated leaders the last 50 years. They continue experiment to find the best way to develop China, humbly follow good practices wherever they come from. They are carving a new path for other less develop nation to follow.

Key words are to follow. That implies freedom of choice. "They continue experiment to find the best way to develop China, humbly follow good practices wherever they come from." in this regard, I feel you are truthful. I have been impressed by Chinas efforts in this regard. Which is why I had such high hopes that China would always be a friend to democracies and set an example of statesmanship in a diverse world. I did not expect, increasing acts of force or threats of force. And that, has really saddened and left me feeling like a naive fool to have believed in China.

🤣👉"If there used to be a referendum by the United Nations, I believe 90 per cent of Baloch will vote for freedom", said the Khan of Kalat while speaking to ANI at the ongoing 36th regular session of Human Rights Council in Geneva. While attending a side event on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) at the UNHRC, he raised his concern over the ongoing genocide of Baloch people.

Hitler was much greater than XI. Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin all were greater than Xi by a mile at least. Xi can't write something the world wants to read. Like Hitler's My Struggle or 4/12 Years of Lies Stupidity and Cowardice. Socialism with German characteristics is more like it. Without the German input China would today be a Ukraine. What about the failure of German Marxism in Cambodia. Or how about German Communism in Viet Nam. What about German communism in East Germany or Poland? Where did it all go? What happened there? The only question worth asking is how many perished. Anakborneo, what aspect of bloody murder do you admire most? Is it the part when starving man eats another dead mans flesh? Or what? I really need to know. THANKS.

I'm a Chinese and I'm proud of our country and our people. The world used to be west centered for more than 200 years now and China did suffer from invasions and civil wars during this time. Thankfully the dark time is finally over. China is not actually as what most people perceived because it is never well understood by the west. Western world throughout its history was full of wars and invasions, while China never invaded other countries for its entire 5000 years of civilization. That's because loving peace and hospitality are in our gene. We Chinese are those who care about unification of country and solidarity of our people, defending our territory from invasion and wiping out humiliation of old time by achieving re-unification. Please don't think of us as a threat or anything western media promotes😂That's not true. Also, Chinese style communism/socialism is not as simple as what westerners usually think. Otherwise, it can't be this successful. Best wishes for world peace!!! and welcome to visit our country! I assure you it will give you soooo many surprises that you have never seen on western media.

If you watch the comments made by Xi ZhongXun’s old friend (Li Rui). You will know how poor Xi’s education and his understanding of modern world. Xi went to top because of his father. Considering Xi’s personality, knowledge and skill, having china led by Xi is a disaster waiting to happen. Wait for a few years from now and you will see.
