I raise rabbits as well chickens. The rabbit manure is useable immediately while the chicken mix you need to wait a couple months. I compost both along with ash from burning wood and yard debris. This mix goes into my raised beds with peat moss and perlite. My soil is awesome and it produces more chilies than I can process. All I water them with is just water and it is right from the tap! I top the beds off all winter with this mix and mix it up a bit with the pitch-fork. Come spring the plants the get placed in the beds love me. Some countries use their own manure :P

An excellent video. I love the detailed information on what fertilisers to use/not use, when to use them and how much to use. I was very interested in hearing you say to essentially underfeed and underwater the superhots for more intense flavour/taste. Does this also make the peppers sweeter through the sugars in them becoming more concentrated? Your Beginners' Guide to Growing Peppers is a great series because the videos are very detailed. I'm hoping you'll cover hand pollination in time. I found I needed to hand pollinate the superhots to get fruit to set. The milder chillies took care of pollination themselves.
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Elisabetta. I will certainly be showing hand pollination (and a couple other methods too!) Only problem is that will only be in a few months time once I have some flowers to pollinate! And I have tasted the difference with my sweet peppers too when underfeeding and underwatering too. The only problem is they tend to be smaller peppers....however the flavour and sweetness is great! When you taste a homegrown sweet pepper compared to a store bought, it is amazing the difference...I eat them like fruit!

No miracle-grow after that

I’ve been growing chillis from seed for over 20 years. I fertilise with Chilli Focus and MaxiCrop seaweed liquids and foliage feed with ‘Spray n’ Go’ which is imported into the UK. A top top. Have for Goliath spray feeding is to add 5-6 drops of a liquid surfactant to a 1L spray bottle. It breaks the surface tension of the water and therefore wets the leaves evenly rather than blobbing. I’m convinced this improves uptake of the nutrients by my plants 👍

A rhyme I read somewhere re NPK.. is: "Up, Down, All around" thus N for up (growth above ground), P for down (below ground).. and K for all around plant health. So when looking at NPK for different ferts and their numbers or % ratios.. let it rhyme.

Hi chillichump I have a horticultural degree and currently work as an agronomist for the stri. I would like to add to your foilar spray some calcium. Cal mag is usually applied together to arable farm crops as calcium improves the cell structure and rigidity within the plant it also improves soil condition and is classed as a micronutrient but its actually critical and some agronomists out it up there with macronutrients. I would add a measurement of around 1-2 drops to your 1.5 litres of water for pretty instant results in cell rigidity and healthyness fighting any calcium deficiany. We also as around 0.6% nitrate as a foliar in with cal mag. I'd like to add one more edit. If you're doing this organically as possible. Bake 10 or so eggshells (high in calcium) for 10 minutes or so. Crush them up in a grinder and then soak some warm quater with the eggshells to make an eggshell tea. You can also use this as a calcium carbonate spray and add your water tea spoon of Epsom salts for this to have an organic mix :)

Good tip about total NPK in fertilizer labels. When the ratios add up to very little, that's the percentage of NPK vs the rest water/filler. I use 20:20:20 +TE, as it's good value and contains everything plants need. half strength for seedlings. But then you go on that strange organic crowd tangent. Honestly, your seaweed fertilizer might have some good trace minerals but, contains only a little bit of potassium (K). For seedlings use sterile and mostly nutrient free media, i.e. never use compost or soil, and use complete balanced fertilizer appropriately, for best results. The organic crowd makes up stuff that doesnt cut the mustard. On the one hand they talk about having no nutrients whatsoever in growing media, but then they use composts, to invite damping off and other diseases. Yes, you do want sterile media that does not contain pathogens. That means no compost and no soil from garden into cell tray. That doesnt mean you dont want nutrients though, as if seeds needed a nutrient free media/soil. It's not true. In nature, chilli and other seeds are dropped by birds onto soil with a package of nutrients. Organic crowd always tends to get their knickers in a knot and get things wrong, when they're told some fact.

How often and when its the perfect time to fertilize? And do your main water tank (inside green house) for drip irigation also contains fertilization or its just pure rain-water?
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 5 жыл бұрын
There is no perfect time to fertilise, the plants needs change as they grow. At the moment I am fertilising once in 3 weeks , with my tank of water in the greenhouse. So I will go through a tank a week of water. 2 tanks will be plain water, then one tank with diluted fertiliser. Earlier on in the season the plants have plenty fertiliser in the compost anyway. So a very light seaweed fertiliser after a month of them becoming seedlings will be fine.

When you recommend that tomato one is that because they’re still in the growing phase and you’ll switch out once they’re at a fruiting stage?

why would someone give chillies something with NPK 1,"0", 5 or so, haven't we learned that peppers like phosphorus?
@FaithVsFate
@FaithVsFate 2 жыл бұрын
Can’t remember where I heard it, but was under the impression that nitrogen for early growth to encourage size and foliage and then phosphorus later on when they begin flowering/fruiting to encourage the focus on fruit? Confused cause I see the seaweed ratio focuses a lot on the Phosphorus which seems backwards. I generally, when not growing from seed, buy seedlings from store or nursery. They’re generally in what appears to be a peat mix or a composted mix with visible fertlizer pellets. I generally wait a week to two then pot them up but if they’re like 6-7in seedling (super chili for example) what fertilizer would I want to focus on? I just figured there was a type of nutrient that they required most during a certain age but I’m hearing mixed info. Hopefully that rambling makes sense
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, nitrogen is required for early green growth. A good quality compost will have more than enough nitrogen for the early stages. The seaweed fertiliser will be gentle enough for your young plants. Adding too much nitrogen could burn the roots.

@ChilliChump

I put fertiliser into the water butt...but alternate. So one water butt with fertiliser, and then refill the water butt once empty with plain rain water, no fertiliser. It really depends on the stage of the season. I don't get listed at all early on because the compost mix I make has plenty to keep the plants happy for a month or so at least.

At this point, use a half strength tomato fertiliser. No need for epsom salt just yet!

Love your videos mate, really informative and practical. Much appreciated!!! Have you tried feeding your plants, using BioBizz products? I understand that they are not meant to be used with Peppers plants, however, as I was already accustomed to using them, I've been using this in the last 2 growing seasons, and they seem to be doing just fine, pretty cost-effective too. Additionally, I have been dabbling with growing peppers hydroponically, and I am trying this season the kratky method, which is a passive hydroponic system. Have you tried this method or other passive hydroponic methods? If so, what were your results?

Use an aquarium pump for 24 hours on tap water. That helps get rid of chlorine.
@ChilliChump

Unfortunately that doesn't work for chloramine which is increasingly use in tap water. Our water has chloramine and chlorine in it.

@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, they should survive ok. Just adapt the way you water and feed them during the colder months (less water, less feeding!). The plants will not really produce flowers or pods in the colder season, but as soon as it warms up again they should flourish!

G'day mate. I'm in my 1st ever season of growing chillies..... I'm in Oz and bought good strong seedlings mid nov. As luck would have it, I'm using several of the techniques that I've seen u discuss so far..... I have 8 plants, 4 super hot and 4 milder plants. All are fruiting very, very nicely atm. My question for u is this, Mr Chillie Chump, if i may call u that.... Hahahaha.... I'm interested in the foliant spray, the Epsom salts specifically..... Can I use Epsom salts as a spray whilst they are fruiting? Hope to hear back from you. Cheers mate.
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 4 жыл бұрын
You can use the epsom salts at any point of the growth. It is perfectly safe for human consumption (within reason of course!). But you will get the most benefit of the salts during the green growth (leaves, stems etc.)

Hi! I was wondering what I should use as fertilizer because much of what you use is only available in the UK, and I’m growing my peppers in the US. I noticed that your seaweed extract’s NPK is 5-2-5, and I can’t find anything like that sold here. All of the seaweed extracts are 0-0-1, or “concentrated” (0-0-4.5). Would that be okay without any added supplements? Also, the only fish blood and bone I could find is 4-7-4, and yours is 3-9-3. I was considering adding a small amount of bone meal (4-12-0) to supplement the lack of nitrogen and phosphorus, but I know it isn’t as simple as making sure that my NPK is the same as yours in the end. What do you think? Do you have any ideas on whether I should go with the 0-0-1 or 0-0-4.5 seaweed? Do you think I should apply it to the plants any differently? I’m sorry for asking so many questions that might have obvious answers, but I’m new to this. Thanks for making such an amazing series, I’m excited to get these peppers growing!

I'm surprised at the low N and P in your Seaweed fertiliser....doesn't seem right. The alternative would be a liquid tomato fertiliser. Use it at a third strength for young seedlings, and half strength when your plants are full size. Fish, Blood and Bone is a good amendment for the soil you use (it is more than just the NPK values), but don't rely on that to supplement your liquid fertiliser necessarily.

@@ChilliChump In Australia our most widely used seaweed solution is a product called Seasol, with an NPK analysis of 0-0-0. Its amazing stuff though, promoting root growth, feeding beneficial soil microbes and strengthening the cell walls creating stronger growth and aiding resistance to attack by pests. We use it a lot to reduce transplant and heat stress. Although it contains micro nutrients in small amounts, it's considered a 'plant tonic' though and not a true fertiliser. It's made from two species of kelp native to Australia and New Zealand, Durvillaea potatorum, Durvillaea Antarctica and scophyllum nodosum. Pretty great stuff and worth checking out if its available in your neck of thew woods (it's likely not though).

Hi mate do you use the seaweed fert aswel as fish blood and bone?
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 4 жыл бұрын
The fish, blood and bone meal is in my soil mix. I only use liquid fertiliser after the nutrients have been mostly used up (i.e. after a month or so of potting up). In the earlier part of the season, I use seaweed fert, then I switch to others ferts with different NPK.

How do you balance spraying the Epsom Salts and spraying the neem oil in later stages?
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 4 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't need to spray epsom salts until much later in your season if you started with good compost. And by that time, it will be too hot for aphids, so you won't be using the neem mix anymore.

Ah....I see what you mean. Unfortunately that wouldn't really work boiling would only concentrate impurities because the pure water would evaporate. With regards to chlorine you can just let the water sit in an open container and chlorine will off-gas naturally. If you have chloramine however that won't work...you need to use something like a Camden tablet.

I love Munich! I try go most years for the Christmas Market. Tomato fertiliser should be available at your local garden center (I actually have found some at my local supermarket too). It is quite common (which is why I suggested it, easy to get and relatively cheap). Epsom salts you should be able to get at a health store, or chemist. But that may not be the cheapest method. Although you don't need a lot! Hope that helps you out!
