Completely relate to the feeling watching Dumbo getting drunk. I saw that movie as a kid in a drive-thru movie, maybe the first drive-thru I went to, watching Dumbo with his wild dreams on that big screen freaked me out. Also, yes, on Lord of the Flies. I saw this movie in lit class in 6th grade and it crushed me for years. P.S. I can't take horror movies.

My family laugh at me because I can watch serial killer movies like Silence of the Lambs with no problem, but I cannot watch where someone is mean to an elderly person or someone with a disability. Images like that just live rent-free in my head, and I cannot stop thinking about them.

Earliest scary movie experience I can remember was walking in on my sisters watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie). Caught the scene where the two drunk guys are stumbling home and one gets bitten, then is later trying to get into his friend’s house through the window. I was probably 6 years old, but it created a paralyzingly fear of vampires that lasted until my adult life. Now “What We Do In the Shadows” is one of my favourite movies. Also, the false grail scene from The Last Crusade scarred me so much that I didn’t watch any Indiana Jones again until I was an older teenager.

Horror lover here. The scary movie that I remember absolutely terrifying me as a child was the first Halloween. I was 10 or 11 when I first saw it and was able to make it to the end without any problems. Then the final scene happens where you hear Michael Myers' breathing get louder and louder. By itself this isn't so bad, but I happened to be sitting in front of an open window and a gust of wind quietly blew in and hit the back of my neck, making me think Michael was right behind me. Gave me terrible nightmares!

When you two started talking about a child’s first horror experience coming from Disney, it reminded me of this documentary about horror movies I once saw. One of the directors that was interviewed said the exact same thing and, in his opinion, how a child reacts to scary moments in a Disney film is a good predictor of how they will handle horror movies when they get older. Maybe you two are getting better at film analysis than you give yourselves credit for!

As someone who isn't particularly a scary movie fan as such, I can absolutely say that I've never pictured myself in place of any characters on screen. Equally, I never get scared or traumatised by anything I watch, so maybe that is at least part of the reasoning.

I've loved horror movies for basically as long as I can remember. When I was young, my family was very strict about MPAA ratings, so I think my first horror film might actually have been 1922's Nosferatu. It's a silent movie and is very old, and it didn't really frighten me, but I was fascinated by the idea of being scared by a movie and watched tons of other classic horror films throughout my teenage years. As an adult, I still watch a lot of horror, make my own horror short films, and have acted in the occasional haunted house. I personally enjoy frightening people, as strange as that may sound, so watching a horror film, even if it does scare me, feels like an opportunity to learn from a peer instead of the personal attack that a lot of viewers seem to see it as

When you watch horror, it's not that you turn your empathy completely off, but you do turn it down a bit. You take it more for the whole...the sum of it's parts. To be less scared, you recognize that it's just storytelling, and the actors, and director and set designers, and composers etc. are working together to give you a a dark experience. And you get a piece of that experience, without actually having to go through it yourself. And yeah, it's fun. It's like a controlled experiment. You get the adrenaline rush, and the creepy vibes, and the shared experience of things that are usually taboo. And that's exciting. And Cassie I also consider The Witches my first horror movie. LOL

Yeah, that's how I look at it. Like a bunch of people got together to put on a show designed to get the audience's heart rate up. The 'controlled' aspect is what makes it fun and not horrible.

Scream was kind of the one that got me hooked. I remember my babysitter telling me they were filming a movie at her grandparents house, and it turned out it was Stu's home from the big climactic scene at the end. I got to hear a bit about the filming, but it was pretty hush hush, even back then. Anyways saw it at the theater when I was 11 and it was a super fun experience. Then immediately rented a bunch from the video store after that. I've seen most of them at this point.

My first scary film as a kid was interview with the vampire. Lestat especially. The scene where he comes back from the swamp all rotted, grimy, and angry. Can't unsee it. That and the warwick davis leprechaun films. His makeup and voice in those movies freaked me out. My older brother used to tease me about it lol, mimicking that voice at night outside my door. I'm great with horror now, though i prefer action films.

like many others, I was exposed to horror films a little too early. One film that should've totally destroyed me, as a 6-7 year old kid, was The Exorcist. I've experienced it while hanging out with my older cousins who were already in Junior High and High School. That movie, surprisingly, did nothing to me. No nightmares at all, considering it's one of scariest of all time. Now that I've seen it a bazillion times, it's literally just a comedy. Others will agree, lol. And one horror movie I was obsessed with as a kid, Children of the Corn [1984] by the absolute legend, Stephen King. I don't know why. I just loved it. I remember drawing and recreating the scenes, like my very own script, lol. Today, I don't care much for it, but I still remember most of the lines. The theme song is creepy too. Favorite monster: Jason Vorhees. I've always liked his style of wearing the Hockey Mask in silence.

im with Carly, I cannot watch Signs alone. I've always been terrified of the "Greys". I had a lot of nightmares as a child. There were nights where I would wake up in the middle of night, on my side, and I'd be so terrified of turning around affraid of actually seeing an alien by my bed staring at me. I would just stare at the wall until daylight. I guess I watched too much of The X-Files and alien/ufo documentaries. As an adult, I get goosebumps everytime I see them. Even ET scares me a little, lol. Since Carly is ok to watch alien movies, Fire In The Sky [1993], would be a good one to watch together sometime. Based on true events. love the podcast! cheers 🍻

The score from Jaws kept me from watching it as a little kid. My dad took me to see Jaws 4 and the opening scene had me running out of the theater by the music alone. Then there was The Exorcist. It was re-released in theaters when I was 5 or 6. When it got really scary, I felt I had to keep my eyes opened to be safe. Back then wearing a knife on your belt wasn’t a big deal, I took my dads knife out of its sheath and held it in front of me and stabbed at the screen to keep the bad stuff away. I ended up cutting my dad. At a very young age, I learned what’s in my head is likely worse than what’s on the screen. Fast forward to high school and my sisters and I are on a horror movie kick. We rented The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and before you see anything bad happen, the atmosphere and sets made it too scary for my sisters and they turned it off. I don’t think they’ve ever finished it. Then The Exorcist is released again for the 20th anniversary and we go see it. I was wearing a flannel shirt and a t shirt underneath, my sister Nichole took my flannel and she was hiding under it and I look over to my sister Abby and she’s covered her eyes with her hand. As an adult, it’s certainly what I can’t see is what creeps me out the most so movies like The Blair Witch Project and Dark Waters get me the best.

I knew it, Cassie and I are closer to the same age. Because Dumbo was my childhood favorite movie. Even though it wasn't hers, it was something in the v.h.s. box that we own. Along with Beverly Hills cop, Conan the destroyer.a sure thing and Return to wtich mountain. But the earliest of life for me is the mid-eighties. P.s. Yes, we picture ourselves as the characters in horror movies.
@robertallen972Күн бұрын
As a lifelong horror fan, I can state unequivocally that I absolutely empathize with the characters on screen. But I’m also aware that what’s taking place onscreen is fiction. I don’t believe Cassie is fully able to make that distinction. Time and again I’ve heard her talk about liking or disliking an actor based on the characters they played, even going so far as to say that she hoped a particular actor was a “good guy” in a movie she was about to react to, because she wanted that actor to “redeem” himself after a prior, unconnected movie. They are NOT the characters they portray. It’s fiction. And, once you can make that distinction fully, the scary stuff onscreen just becomes another story, to be told well or poorly.

I can watch the older scary movies without getting too scared now but 21st century scary movies rely too much on the loud sounds and jump scares and it takes me out of the plot. That said, I watched Poltergeist when I was younger than 10 and had massive nightmares and I didn't watch it till I was over 20, still hesitantly. But now, I can watch it without blinking an eye (and your reaction to it was my favorite.) The movie that shouldn't have been scary but scared me was War of the Worlds because of the noise the tripods made when they first come out of the ground. I've had a fear of noises that aren't recognizable and that was one.

This is a silly one.... The first thing I remember watching on TV that gave me a nightmare as a kid was the TV special "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". I don't remember being scared watching it, but that night I had a nightmare that the Abominable Snowman was chasing me in the Artic. I woke up because he caught me and was about to smash me into a rock - woke up screaming for my mother. I realize I was 6 years old or something like that, but it's still comical to me that that show gave me a nightmare.

Bambi scarred me at about age 3. Beetle-Juice horrified me when he turned into the snake...I screamed my head off & ran outta the room! There's a movie called Silent Night Deadly Night...avoid it at all costs! Snakes, needles & Santa are my triggers...I will straight up flip out! Sadly, the stories that Disney chooses to re-make, have truly horrific endings in reality. A Goofy Movie is my fave Disney film...then Aladdin. Most of the live action Disney films I love are from Hollywood Pictures. Disney's unloved films like Hook go there. Hook is 1 of my all time favorite too!

I'm not exactly afraid of them...I just want to attack them lol But I hated the clown in The Devil's Rejects so much that I was a bit relieved when the actor died. The 4th Kind messed with me for a week or 2. Frailty is a hard movie to wrap your head around. Off subject: Surely, you've seen 12 Monkeys with Brad Pitt & Bruce Willis...it's 1 of my faves!
