I like the supergt ones. They stick it in, lock the air, and detach the hose/source. You're left with just the lance to pull, also makes it easy for them to jack it onto wheels and move it into garage when there's an issue.

Hard to see as they are fabricated into the chassis, would need a bare chassis in build stage to do that properly

Great video Jack ! I wonder if there is a specification for how high the jack has to lift the car off the deck ? If not then I wonder if any teams ever tried to minimise the lift to save a bit of time - only micro seconds I know but everything counts ! Also the fitting for the air spike is quite small so maybe a funnel shaped housing around it would help to guide the fitting onto the spike ? Once again only a microsecond gain but it all ads up .
@perkinsengineering
@perkinsengineering Жыл бұрын
Yep all that was done through the 2000's, they shortened the stroke to the minimum height to get wheels off ground, then for rear tyres only only lift the rear of car. Big funnels became the rage too, this car is before that period.

How stable is the car whilst it's on the double stands? I saw footage of a Supercar being worked on recently, after a crash and it was rocking around a bit on the double stands. Might be slightly unnerving underneatrh it.

Hi Jack. Do you know which year the air jacks were first used? I remember seeing a clip on KZbin of a pit stop of the 1984 HDT car that your father and Peter Brock drove which didn't use air jacks but from my memory by 1987 they were using air jacks. I also recall a race which Dick Johnson's car had a fault with an air jack which partially dropped down. Always good to see your videos and may I suggest for a future topic is the water bottles that are used in each of the different cars.
@perkinsengineering
@perkinsengineering Жыл бұрын
It’s another good question, well before my time to be fair. I’ll have to ask a few of the old boys. Our first car, PE001, built in 1986 was fitted with them. Funnily enough water/drink bottles is on my list for future episodes!

Is the reason you use AP or Bilstein because of regulations? Could you use a generic/industrial cylinder for a budget racer in a lower class if you wanted to try n fit something like that to your car?
@vech400
@vech400 Жыл бұрын
I guess you could even use nitrous if you were a drag racer to power them other than argon or nitrogen
@perkinsengineering
@perkinsengineering Жыл бұрын
@@vech400 well when we built race cars they were never regulated. Bilstein were cost effective, easy to maintain and suited our application. They’ve only become regulated in the modern supercars as parts went to tender etc. I wouldn’t recommend using something that’s not designed for racing. These are designed and manufactured to not fall out on the track, not to blow up in the garage for example as high levels of air pressure can be very very dangerous, especially with fittings, hoses, lines etc.

hey jack how about you interview your old man about the story of him blowing away the cops on the hwy and racing back to HDT, parking the car and hiding out in HDT, the cops turned up and description was of your old man, large mustache and glasses would make a great story interview , was it really your dad, i worked at AMI in Bertie st port melb at the time and we always watched in our lunch breaks the HTD guys test fanging the cars around the block testing the road cars, great days

Does the block of wood come with a Perkins part number?? Various heights? Though airjacks,, just another cost that is really not required. Build a decent jacking point into the car and simply jack it up, one each side. Then if you want to work on it use stands. I have welded some 'stand' points into the floor and simply drop stands through the floor with holes. Works well and cost about $50 for the materila to do it. And,, get rid of those dumb dangerous centrelock wheels, go back to 5 stud, Larrys preferred method!! And save a LOT of money
