What a touching story about the girl in the hospital with your quilt. I bet it touched your heart also. This is a beautiful quilt and for the lady talking about the pattern being so 2014 well I have quilt magazines with the same pattern in the 1990s. Yes I collect magazines. Your backing is so pretty love the print🌷

So true! I was given the opportunity when I was TWELVE years old, by my mom and dad, to choose whatever decor I wanted in a new room in our home. I chose a lovely yellow and white gingham wallpaper stripe with tiny pink roses and painted the paneling below the wallpaper a sunny yellow. IF that SAME wallpaper was available TODAY, I would CHOOSE IT!!!! And that was almost 50 years ago!! I like what I like and will stick with what I like!!! :)

Jean this is very pretty. Funny that I picked this video to watch today the story is beautiful and sad but the reason I find it a coincidence is because sadly yesterday I got news that my step niece died in a hit and run yesterday, and I’m sewing to comfort me. Thanks for your videos

Jean, what can I say but it's another Beautiful Quilt you've made. I too want to thank you for teaching me/us how to make a Quilt from beginning to the end. Most Videos I've watched before I ran across one of your Videos they show you then they maybe... maybe ...show how to make 1 block or square what every you call it LOL.. then they cut the camera off and come back and show a ending and I'm like WHAT !! It leaves me to not knowing really one thing totally about the video they showed. Then I happen to click on one of your 3 months ago and I was hooked and kept watching different videos you have on you-tube and I feel so lucky be a beginner Quilt after 20 years or 30 not making one thing I worked many years of my life away. Then I grew up and now I Quilt all the time it's my Happy Place ,just for me when its just me home. I'm a widow with 5 grandkids but I do get time alone and I sew.Bless you for taking the time to teach us and you go at my speed and you can't ask for anything else .Linda A , WV

I am sort of working on the premise that people who watch me don't know a heck of a lot about quilting and so I begin pretty much at square one. If you follow along with JEAN'S BLOCK PARTY ~ 2018 - from Block 1 to Block 20 and on to the finishing, I pretty much show beginners how to select fabric, measure, cut, where to sew, etc., Hope this helps! :)

I'm a 'learner quilter' I've made 4 so far, several years ago, all hand quilted as I didn't know about a free motion foot then. and want to get back into it. I have two appliqué fleece-backed ones in mind for a friends children that I'd like to do first. I'm so glad I recently came across your channel. You are talented, arty, funny and a great tutor. I'm binge-watching your channel for tips, ideas and humour!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Just a word of advice though - fleece backing can be a bit tough to free motion quilt as it 'sticks' a bit to the bed of the machine. You need your fabric to move very smoothly and freely to free motion quilt well. I have done it but it was a bit of a pain. There is a slippery 'mat' I think, called the Supreme Slider, which is very very slick and makes free motion quilting easier. Just an idea! But all the best and thanks again for watching and bingeing!! (Didn't your mother tell you that is dangerous:!:!: ) LOL!! LOL!!! :)
@JaneandPatrick7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip about fleece.....I think I'll hand quilt them, no point setting myself up for failure!! I'll experiment on something slippier. And LOL, my mum used to say everything was dangerous but I've made it to 55......

Great tutorial, as usual, you really cover all the bases 👍 If you’re new to quilting, this is a super satisfying pattern. It looks way more complex than it is and you can change it up with bright colours if you want. I’ve made it with just two fabrics, plain and print, and it turned out really pretty. It may not be the latest design, but you’re hoping to make an heirloom and in a few years it will be back in fashion again😊.

Hi Jean! I've never made a chevron quilt, but now I want to after watching this! My first quilt I made for my daughter for her birthday about 10 yrs ago when she was stationed in Iraq. It was just big blocks of patriotic fabric with sashing and cornerstones, but the middle blocks were squares of white fabric that I had family and friends sign/decorate. She cried when she opened it and even though it was my first quilt, I don't think I'll ever make another that will mean as much as that one. Your story of your rainbow chevron quilt reminded me of it. I can imagine how that young lady felt covered in all that love! Anyway, I was wondering if you have ever made a braided quilt.....its one I'd love to do someday. Thanks for sharing!!❤
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
Aw sweet story! These memories are wonderful and touching! Yes, I have made a braided quilt - perhaps I will add that to my list of 'to do's'!
@Sharon-pb7so6 жыл бұрын
Jean Truelove I'd LOVE to see you do a braided quilt. I did a braided border on my last quilt using half hexagons. That quilt, now that I think about it, was all half square triangles. The pattern almost drove me crazy but it finally all fell into place. I only had the center square of the quilt to build the rest of the quilt around it, no pattern. I probably drew the quilt out four times until I finally got out my colored pencils and really drew and colored until it was right.

Very nice Jean, and easy to follow. Getting supplies today to see if I can get the black and grey. Our quilt shop seems to be going Kaffee Fassett way, multicoloured rainbow fabric. Trying to get used to sewing red, orange etc together, not my colours hahaha!!!

I like Kaffe Fasset - to a certain extent. Some of the prints are so similar that I feel that when made into blocks~ they all blend into one great mass. Might as well just have one all over print! Just my opinion! I normally gravitate to romantic florals and so the black and grey was out of my comfort zone, but it's a nice place to step!! :)

I am making a chevron quilt. I am using this half square triangle pattern with two layer cakes that I got. Making two half square triangles out of two pieces of fabric. I have the sandwich together. I am now doing the quilting. I am outlining the chevron pattern about half inch spacing with my rows using the walking foot as my spacing guide. •what is the correct ergonomic position to be sitting at my sewing machine??? After a couple days of doing this quilting on my home sewing machine, I have pulled back muscles in my lower back. It’s 80x70 and I used a lightweight cotton batting. But it’s darn heavy turning it every 12 inches or so. This is my third quilt, but the first one I have “quilted”. I love your videos Thanks!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory6 жыл бұрын
Do you have your quilt supported well and sturdy BEHIND your machine? To the SIDE of your machine? In your lap? VERY IMPORTANT! I find that having my chair (hydraulic) a tiny bit higher helps me to look sort of 'down' at the project....only working with one small area at a time. YOU MUST take lots and lots of breaks, stretch your neck, roll your shoulders, keep your upper body AWAY from your ears (!!! :) and get up frequently. Sitting DIRECTLY in front of your needle (center of body) is so important. Even the casters on a rolling chair should be positioned properly (really!!) so your body is not 'slanted', even ever so little. I have a small cushion in the small of my back which I can lean back into, taking the pressure off my lower back/lower back thighs. Makes a world of difference! It is really important to think of your quilt one small section at a time and take breaks. Then the project isn't all that daunting. That's my thought anyway. All the best! Let me know how you get on! :) Thanks for watching me! :)
@susanmei99805 жыл бұрын
I saw this somewhere on youtube: get one or two inexpensive rolling clothes racks (I got cheap at Aldi's a cpl months ago) and some bungee cords and some heavy duty clips ($ Tree). Position behind your quilting table & to the left. Hang the bungees from the rack, put clips on the ends and clip to corners or sides of your quilt (or wherever you need) to support the weight of your quilt. The bungees & rollers make it flexible to move with you, while taking the weight off the quilt. I haven't tried it yet, but I got all the stuff. Sounds like it will work great! 👌 😊

Thread question: at minute 27 your thread spool changed. You started with a "regular" spool, and now I see the "bullet-looking" spool. I just bought a few spools that look like bullets. Sorry I can't recall proper term, cone thread?My question is, can I use my mini cone looking thread on the sideways spindle? It looks like that's what you did. am I seeing right? Thanks! Great quilt, great tutorial. Blessings to you!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
I was sewing on different days and, yes, I changed my thread. I ran out of my Aurifil and changed over to my Coats and Clarks for the last bits of sewing. I have no trouble using my sideways spindle for my mini cone thread - as long as the spool-stopper (if that's what its' called, that disk thingy) is on snuggly. Thanks again! :)

I love this quilt and want to try it. I cannot afford a long arm quilter, so I was thinking, could I pin and tie the quilting part by hand with embroidery thread and a curved needle? What do you think?
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
That's an idea - however, this smallish quilt was NOT sent off to a long arm quilter. I quilted the straight lines on my home sewing machine and as it is not large, anyone could do it also! I've never tied a quilt, but you could! But I prefer to quilt mine - and when I keep them small, it is do-able!! :)

So how big will one pack of 10’ layer cake make in the chevron quilt? I’m making it next from your tutorials. I’m sorry I ask so many questions but I’m learning. Lol
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory6 жыл бұрын
No worries! For a quilt about 72" x 86" you would need TWO layer cakes - one of the print fabric and one of the background fabric. One layer cake is about 2 3/4 yards of material so you could cut 10" squares from yardage for the background if you wanted to. Hope this helps!

What kind of ruler is that with the rotary cutter attached to it? Thanks! Beautiful quilt!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
It is a FISKARS Rotary cutter/ruler combo 6" x 24". Joann Fabrics have them for about $70 but I got mine from Amazon for about $50. And Thank you very much! :)

I have a question when you cut your borders do you cut them from salvage to salvage or length way or does it matter
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
I usually cut them length wise - uses more fabric but I don't like to seam a border if I can help it. Cutting this way MAY cause the borders to 'wave' slightly, so handle them very carefully ~ I starch like mad so my borders lay nice and flat.

This is a FISKARS Rotary Cutte/Ruler Combo tool. You can get them at Joann's (with a coupon) or on Amazon (where I got mine:) Best Tool Ever:)

Love this tutorial and enjoy all of them , wanted to ask have you ever did a quilt that you quilt as you go? I have a big problem with the quilting on the machine and can't afford having it done. Just about quit making quilt tops because of having such a hard time putting it together .
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory7 жыл бұрын
Machine quilting CAN be so daunting...Lots of people have your problem. I do know there are tutorials (here on KZbin) about quilt-as-you-go, but I don't do that method on big quilts. I have only done small projects. Perhaps you can look up another one? SO Sorry I can't help. Sending quilt tops out to a long-arm operator is effective BUT very expensive, I know. Lucky those who can afford it. I wish you all the best and sorry I couldn't be of assistance. All the best! :)

I have made a quilt one block at a time, placing the quilt sandwich, quilt it then joining them together with sashing,you might want to try this.

Hi Nancy, Marti Michell (not sure I spelled that right) has a few awesome classes on Craftsy/Bluprint. If you sign up for emails, they frequently have sales, sometimes as low as $10 each. But her classes are fabulous! (On Quilt as You Piece method) and she shows lots of ways to join the blocks.

Trends, styles, popular at the time....why don't people have or develop their 'own' identity and personality and style, and love whatever it is they love whenever it is they love it?!? LOL!

if your layer cake only comes with TWO of the same fabric- you can do this chevron with smaller/thinner lines using the easy 8 method. You make 8 half square triangles from each 10" square. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZKlfICnrtxgZqc
